Early Bird Rise and Shine

On This Day – Pete Souza: “The President pretends to be caught in Spider-Man’s web as he greets Nicholas Tamarin, 3, just outside the Oval Office. Spider-Man had been trick-or-treating for an early Halloween with his father, White House aide Nate Tamarin in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. I can never commit to calling any picture my favorite, but the President told me that this was HIS favorite picture of the year when he saw it hanging in the West Wing a couple of weeks later.” Oct. 26, 2012

    Good morning, Chips and TODville.

One of the things I really love about President and Mrs. Obama is their love and appreciation of art. It’s reflected in the many ways they’ve changed and left their imprint on the White House for the better.

Hi, AMK. The Brits have a longer history than the US, so they probably learned something. In this country, you have to bat your head against a solid wall repeatedly before anything sinks in and even then it’s unlikely. The US allows its publicly owned airwaves to be taken over by right wing propaganda that openly and admittedly propagates lies, which millions of ill-educated people accept as Gospel truth. And we all go about our business thinking this is okay.

Thank you, otter:) If you can believe this, I went through my entire life only knowing one person born on my birthday…that was my 6th grade teacher:) Now, there are 2 kids in my classroom that share my birthday with me! Party week:) I told my own kids that we could eat on or they could take me out, but I am NOT cooking dinner tonight:) I’m just thrilled to be here and healthy….fyi, It’s HRC’s birthday today, too. She’s definitely older than I am…

My God, Df, how effing sick do you have to be to want kids to overdose on ecstasy. Wish the makers and distributors of these could be caught and sent to a place with very high walls and round-the-clock guards.

Via BJ – this is mainly fear mongering

WHAT’S TRUE: Some forms of Ecstasy are brightly colored and look like candy.

WHAT’S FALSE: These forms of Ecstasy are “new,” intended to appeal to children, and likely to end up in kids’ Halloween trick-or-treat bags.

    Oh geeze! http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/10/26/us-guatemala-election-idUSKCN0SJ04G20151026

Jimmy Morales, a former TV comedian who has never held office, swept to power in Guatemala’s presidential election on Sunday after milking public anger over a corruption scandal that deepened distrust of the country’s political establishment.

The 46-year-old Morales overwhelmingly beat center-left rival and former first lady Sandra Torres in a run-off vote despite his lack of government experience and some policy ideas that strike many as eccentric.

The headquarters of Morales’ center-right National Convergence Front (FCN) party erupted in celebration as official returns showed he had around 68 percent support in a landslide victory.

A comedian with no experience….sound familiar?

Wonder if Morales was a good TV comedian. Americans seem to gravitate toward entertainers who were pretty mediocre in their field–the dumb as doughnuts Ronny Reagan being a prime example. Now we’re got a former tv reality show star scoring high on the Republican side.

Morning all. This morning I woke up dreading all the election related activities that need to get done before November 3 — meetings, phone calls, announcement e-mails and pulling off our second annual Salsa the Vote next Sunday evening. There is no way to simplify putting off a major event if you want people to come through the door, feel good about being there and leave with the urgency to vote. We’re having free food–always a major chore to pull together, dancing and candidate meet and greets. We’re able to borrow a voting booth from the county to allow people to feel what it’s like to vote and we match people with their polling places, while keeping their kids entertained. Just by listing it all, I got me tired enough to want to go back to bed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Opponents of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul are taking yet another challenge to the law to the Supreme Court, and say they will be back with more if this one fails.

A new appeal being filed Monday by the Pacific Legal Foundation contends the law violates the provision of the Constitution that requires tax-raising bills to originate in the House of Representatives.

Pacific Legal Foundation lawyer Timothy Sandefur said the problem with the law is just one example of how “Obamacare is so unconstitutional in so many ways.”

Sandefur said the justices will face one challenge to the law after another until it is significantly changed or repealed.

The court has twice turned back major challenges to the health care law, in opinions written by Chief Justice John Roberts in 2012 and in June. The court also has allowed family-owned businesses with religious objections to opt out of paying for contraceptives for women covered under their health plans. A related case involving faith-oriented colleges, hospitals and charities is pending.

The new appeal, filed on behalf of small-business owner Matt Sissel, stems from the Constitution’s Origination Clause, which requires that the House be the first to pass a bill “for raising revenue.”

All you need to know about this… http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Pacific_Legal_Foundation

The Pacific Legal Foundation is a Sacramento, California-based legal organization that was established March 5, 1973 [1] to support pro-business causes. In recent years, it has taken a lead in pursuing anti-affirmative action policies.
It is the key right-wing public interest litigation firm in a network of similar organizations funded initially by Scaife Foundations money across the USA to support capitalism and oppose environmental and health activism and government regulation.
The organization has been [2] partially funded by a range of corporations and conservative foundations, including by the Koch family Claude R. Lambe Foundation in 1998.[1]

May I vent some more exasperation/annoyance/disgust with the Bernie supporters? As you may have heard, at the Iowa Jefferson Jackson dinner on Saturday – a lot of them got up and left right after Bernie Sanders got done speaking. Well, that was pretty rude! Today I read in the DSM Register that those remaining talked loudly during Clinton’s speech and also yelled out comments about parts they didn’t like. 😦 As it said in this article: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/10/26/us/politics/democratic-dinner-drives-home-hillary-clintons-focus-on-iowa.html?_r=0 – “It offended the polite sensibilities of some Iowans, and was a reminder of why he may find it difficult to appeal to the sort of mainline party activists who have backed the eventual Democratic nominee in all the contested caucuses here since 2000…“Are the Sanders folks going to walk out on the Democrats if he’s not the nominee?” John Deeth, a liberal blogger from Iowa City, pointedly asked on his way out of the dinner.” It seems pretty sophomoric to me that they treat our 2016 election like this. Sigh – off soapbox now.

Wonder if Bernie ever asks his supporters to tone it down a bit? Since they obviously think he’s “the one,” maybe they would.

On second thought, maybe not, since he’s their rabble-rouser.

      Good Morning muscatinegal,

I followed the JJ dinner via twitter on Saturday and the commentary about the Sanders supporters echoes your sentiments.

From everything that I have learned over the years Iowans take this caucus very seriously. It takes patience, commitment and determination to stand their voting until you reach the needed threshold for your candidate. Based on what we saw on Saturday I’m not sure that Sanders supporters have what it takes to win in Iowa.

Martin O’Malley and Clinton seem to have strong organizations established there and Clinton is applying the lessons learned from the mistakes her campaign made in 2008.

Also, the other thing that doesn’t benefit Sanders is that he has a lot of youth support in your state (most of his supporters were bused in from Ginnell (sp) College on Saturday) and the 2016 caucus doesn’t occur until February. Most of these young people will be back at school when the caucus occurs and not spread throughout the state. 8 years ago PBO benefited from the timing of the caucus because his took place right after the New Year when most of the youth was at home and could vote for him within their own precinct.

I was just thinking that B.S. supporters will be the PUMAS of 2016. I think the mature ones will vote for whoever the DEM nominee will be. I hope B.S does not run as an independent like Nader.

    Well this is awkward.

The researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health discovered that expectant mothers living near active fracking sites have “a higher risk of giving birth prematurely and having dangerously high-risk pregnancies.” The study, published online, analyzed health record data of 9,384 expectant mothers linked to 10,946 neonates from 2009 to 2013.

The retrospective cohort study’s researchers found that expectant mothers living in active fracking areas were 40 percent more likely to give birth prematurely, and are 30 percent more likely to have a high-risk pregnancy; “a label that refers to a variety of dangerous factors affecting the fetus.” The research team wrote in the study’s abstract that “Prenatal residential exposure to unconventional natural gas development, i.e. hydraulic fracturing, activity was associated with two pregnancy outcomes, adding to previous evidence that unconventional natural gas development adversely impacts health.”
