The Stars Were Out…..

President Barack Obama talks with 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed during the second Astronomy Night on the South Lawn of the White House. Invited to the White House for the science event, Mohamed was handcuffed and questioned by police last month when he brought a homemade electronic clock to class at MacArthur High School in Irving, TX, and officials ‘mistook’ it for a bomb.

Very much enjoying watching this, feeling quite emotional as Pierre Trudeau was PM when I moved to Canada in 1969. I remember one day a couple of us (had the nerve) walked over to his brother’s place in The Laurentians to see if it would be possible to say Hello and have a chat. Well, they were not overjoyed to see us, neither were they rude or hostile. They suggested that we might write him a letter, that as he and his family were having some down time, it would be best if we walked back home. So, we did. πŸ˜‰

Ha! My memories are coming in clear: Years later, when I was living up in Banff, working at the ski area loading chairs, PM Trudeau and Mrs Trudeau skied through my lift, and I got to load them, close the bar. That felt cool, but what was really really cool, during my break, I just happened to be in the women’s room, and Margaret Trudeau and I washed our hands at the sinks, we greeted each other and went on our separate way. I remember feeling like it was all just okay!

I grew up under Trudeau’s “reign”. My family loved him and most of them voted for his son today. They are so glad Harper is out, and that Justin Trudeau is now to be the new Prime Minister.

O/T for the thread, but save this for later:)

    Don’t Outsource Your Thinking
One of the most useful lessons I learned from working at Facebook had nothing to do with technology: Doubt the media. Always doubt the media. Many journalists are superb, but certain reporters would publish plainly inaccurate information about our products on a regular basis. And if they got our tech wrong, what were they getting wrong in that science story? That war piece?
Today this healthy skepticism led me to start pulling on a thread…

Evening everyone…so much to catch up on, though I do love that my President loves science:)

Mr Trudeau would like to increase taxes on Canadian citizens making more than $200,000 a year, and lower those for the middle class. He has vowed that, if elected, he will work “right away” to see that marijuana is legalised. He also wants to double national spending on infrastructure, which would create a “modest short-term deficit” for the country in the interest of boosting the economy.

That is so cool! He carries it off very well.

Funny thing: Just yesterday while I was riding in my car, I listened to an NPR program where some pundit claimed Trudeau’s being so “incredibly handsome” would likely play against him in the election, because people would see him as a lightweight [Really? Too sexy to have any gravitas, eh? Jealous much? <- my thoughts as I listened to this drivel.] So much for that theory!

I'll have to go find out who that idiot was. Unfortunately, I only caught the tail end of the program.

      • October 20, 2015 at 12:19 am

There is a huge Indian population in Canada.

I wish our elections only lasted ~70 days (which is actually very long for our friends up North) The Liberal party spokesman complained about 25 million in attacks ads as well….that is what a primary candidate raises in hard $$$ per quarter here..not including PAC dough!

        • 112 Dudette
          October 20, 2015 at 12:33 am

Yep, I knew about large Indian population in Canada.

As to the complaints about time and money for the campaign: Tell them to sit down and come back to complain when their candidates need 2 years and 1 billion dollars (US) to win.

      Snips from the article:

“Justin Trudeau took the stage in Montreal and declared that β€œCanadians chose change. Real change.””

“… Trudeau continued his campaign themes of hope and positivity in his speech.
β€œA positive optimistic, hopeful vision of public life isn’t a naive dream β€” it can be a powerful force for change, ” he said.
Trudeau spoke of growing the economy, creating jobs, strengthening the middle class, and helping β€œless fortunate Canadian families work their way into the middle class.”
He also spoke of the importance of having a β€œnation to nation” relationship with indigenous peoples, and working with the provinces.
β€œHave faith in yourselves and in your country,” he said. β€œKnow that we can make anything happen if we set our minds to it and work hard. I am not the one who made history tonight β€” you are.”
Trudeau ended his speech by emphasizing the importance of Canada’s diversity, and of building an inclusive society.
β€œHave faith in your fellow citizens my friends,” he said. ” … they know in their heart of hearts that a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian.””

I see the Obama playbook all over this.

As a longtime Canadian lurker, I would certainly agree that Justin Trudeau was inspired by and borrowed a bunch from President Obama’s campaign and program. Trudeau then combined it with his instincts of the needs and desires of Canadians and his own qualities to make this historic victory happen.

There is little doubt in my mind that Obama is happy to have Trudeau as a fellow leader in North America heading into the Paris Climate Conference. Harper has just been abysmal in terms of climate change leadership and would have been a laggard in the negotiations for a deal. I am now even more hopeful that Obama and other world leaders would now be able to strike a comprehensive agreement.

On the TPP front, Trudeau has stated in the campaign that he would evaluate the deal and share it with the public before making a final decision of support. I believe he would support this deal based on the generally pro-trade philosophy of the current Liberal party and the economics of the deal.

All in all, a good day for Canada and a good day for North American cross-border relations and cooperation.
