It was really great to watch:) I hope some of you got to watch….brought back memories of being at the christening of my husband’s submarine at that very same shipyard…..I could have only wished for someone as inspiring and wonderful as Michelle Obama to do the honors that day…I can not remember who christened his ship…fair winds and following seas to all that sail on the USS Illinois.

I don’t know if I’ve ever taken the time to thank *you*,your family & your husband for your service to our Country. ❤

FLOTUS did not give up on christening that submarine – the bottle finally gave in 🙂

Thank you, GGail:) That means a lot to me…back in those days, no one thanked the spouses of those that went to sea…or served in any capacity away from their families…if they did, it was few and far between. I always felt like everyone’s mind set was that you should have known what you were in for when you got married, so screw you if you couldn’t hack it….sailors were the “property” of the US govt and they were the only priority ( see “protecting the investment”) We were afterthoughts…if we were thought of at all…at least that’s how it felt to me. There is NO COMPARISON to the level of care and concern that FLOTUS/POTUS and the Biden’s show our service members and their families….so glad that they took up this cause and made things right.
The first year of my marriage, he was gone for 9 straight months…thank goodness for my family and a job that I loved at OSU Hospitals that got me through:)

🙂 Third time was a charm for that champagne bottle:)

The GOP has nourished the reactionary, racist Teabagger wing of its party instead of suffocating it in its infancy, and now they are paying the price. Instead of forming a governing coalition and compromising, the GOP has pandered to those whose primary goal is to burn down America rather than to let it be governed under a black man, and now all hell is breaking loose.

But let’s be clear about something, shall we? Kevin McCarthy went down, and the Republican Party is collapsing, because of Republican blowhards, not because of a Democratic one.

The United States will reach the debt limit on November 5. If the limit is not raised prior to that point, the United States could default on its obligations. This could have disasterous effects on the economy of the United States and the entire world. In 2013, a Treasury Department report found “default could result in recession comparable to or worse than 2008 financial crisis.”
Cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is extremely unpopular, even among Republicans. These programs are sacrosanct to most Democratic members of Congress. There is effectively no chance that President Obama or Senate Democrats — both of whom would need to support such legislation — would agree to “structural entitlement reforms” in the next month under these kind of conditions.
The House Freedom Caucus essentially wants to make it impossible for the next speaker to raise the debt ceiling. But that is just the beginning.

Thank you for posting this. I have never seen it before, either. What I saw was the wonderful consistency and realness of the man. He is now, what he was in 2007…..all the power in the world has not changed him.
Before my husband died, he said to me…..”President Obama is still president, isn’t he?” I answered, “Yes sweetheart, he is.” He breathed a deep sigh of relief, and I thought…..fortunate man. He’s the only president he’ll know. We watched the funeral of Senator Pinckney together, and he just sat and nodded and smiled while the President spoke, as if…..I can leave now; everything’s in good hands. He was one old white man who loved and respected him from 22004 until July 25, 2015. I just kind of tear up when I think of his satisfaction and confidence when he realized PBO was still president.

Oh Carolyn, what a wonderful memory to have about your husband. It tells me he was a lot like PBO, because, as the saying goes, it is easy to recognize in others that which you have in your self. You were so blessed to have him in your life.

And now I’m tearing up, too. What a dear man. Thank you for sharing that story.

PBO has been consistent in his values and priorities all his life. He can negotiate with all the great heads of state, visit the Queen of England, walk the halls of power, cradle a baby and he can walk into a barber shop and talk and laugh with everyone. He commands every space because he is REAL and true to his soul.

Thank you Meta – I’ve not seen it before – just reinforced the thought that we will never see anyone like him again – what other politician has EVER been able to communicate with everyone in this fashion. The US gained so much from him – but also lost so much because the true war mongers and haters in congress could not accept that his vision is right and true.

John Lewis: How we won, and are losing, the right to vote

      GIVE US THE BALLOT
The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America
      By Ari Berman

      ——————————————

This book should become a primer for every American, but especially for congressional lawmakers and staffers, because it so capably describes the intricate interplay between grass-roots activism and the halls of Congress. Berman evenhandedly recounts how the success of the nonviolent Selma march empowered Johnson to act. But he also discusses the role that violence played in the history of the Voting Rights Act. The Ku Klux Klan murder of Viola Liuzzo, a Detroit housewife who assisted in the Selma march, paved the way for passage of the bill; but the Watts riots, which ignited just five days after the law was signed, fueled a cynical, destructive backlash against the legislation.

        October 10, 2015 at 3:44 pm

I still believe she is doing this to avoid attacks from Sanders and O’Malley at the debate on Tuesday.

If she gets the nomination…..which is likely, she will flip back. Ugh.

        • 69 Vicki
          October 10, 2015 at 4:03 pm

That’s what I think, too, Linda.

And on the war and peace matter, as recently as a week or two ago Hillary was saying (along with McCain) that PBO’s hesitancy to arm the Syrian rebels was wrong.
Now, that opinion is unimportant. POTUS wanted as little do to with Syria as possible and now we are not even going to provide training or money. The smartest take on entangling USA in another hopeless sectarian tribal catastrophe.

The front runner cannot attract people to her events and is having difficulty figuring out authentic positions and policies that will differentiate her from any other contender.

        • 70 hopefruit2
          October 10, 2015 at 6:54 pm

But based on a tweet I saw from O’Malley in which he pretty much accused her of changing her position on “the eve of the debates”, this strategy by Clinton may backfire…her opponents may actually double down on the attacks and highlight her extensive support for the TPP prior to this month.

    • October 10, 2015 at 4:32 pm

“Clinton’s defection on a pact that she helped champion in Asia during her time as the nation’s top diplomat represents her sharpest break on policy with Obama.”

Not really. Actually it represents Hillary Clinton’s sharpest break from Hillary Clinton.

    • 76 99ts
      October 10, 2015 at 6:38 pm

      And the media who
      1. Screamed for him to be released
      2. Attacked PBO and Bergdahl and his family when he was released

now has virtually nothing to say. This frenzy of stirring up sh!t then dropping it when they find something better is beyond understanding.

      • 77 hopefruit2
        October 10, 2015 at 6:59 pm

Exactly….Keep in mind that like the GOP, the media’s focus is always on PBO, not the person or the principle they claim to care about. Anything that can make PBO look bad, or make life difficult for PBO in some way – the media chases it like there’s no tomorrow. Once there is no longer any perceived political, professional or personal “danger” for PBO, they’re no longer interested.

All PBO’s “Katrinas” have simply been issues that the media HOPED would in some way derail or destroy him. Once PBO leaves office, the term “Katrina” will be retired.

        • 78 99ts
          October 10, 2015 at 7:22 pm

They have never been able to make anything stick – problem is that people believe the initial attacks and the media make no attempt to walk it back – grrrr

          • 79 Sandy1110
            October 10, 2015 at 7:55 pm

            I believe that’s the MSM’s objective.

That’s why they can claim such low approval ratings for PBO, because all anyone ever hears are the negative allegations. And some people simply WANT to believe the worst, so in their skewed view, the negative claims give more support to their incorrect beliefs.

CALIFORNIA TO REGISTER VOTERS AUTOMATICALLY AT DMV

California Governor Signs Landmark Automatic Registration Bill

    Brennan Center for Justice

    ————————————————————-

“California just became a national leader on voting rights,” said Myrna Pérez, deputy director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice. “In too many states, our outdated and error-prone registration system blocks millions from the polls. Automatic permanent voter registration can transform voting in America. Other states should look to California as a bold new model for reform.”

The Golden State’s new law is part of a broader trend to modernize voting and move toward universal registration. California is the third state in the country to pass — and the second state to enact — automatic registration, which puts the onus on the government to sign up eligible citizens. California is by far the largest state to put in place automatic registration.

This Document Reveals Why The House Of Representatives Is In Complete Chaos

    BY JUDD LEGUM OCT 9, 2015 9:51AM

The House of Representative is in chaos. John Boehner announced his intention to step down as Speaker at the end of the month. There doesn’t appear to be anyone to take his place. The leading candidate, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, abruptly withdrew from the race yesterday. Another popular choice, Paul Ryan, says he’s not interested.

What happened? How did we get to this point? One document, produced by the House Freedom Caucus, holds all the answers. Framed as a “questionnaire” the document effectively makes it impossible for any candidate to both: 1) Get elected speaker, and 2) Not send the entire country (and maybe the world) over a cliff.

    …………………………………………………

    Sounds perfectly reasonable, right?

What the Freedom Caucus actually wants

Yesterday, Politico published the House Freedom Caucus “questionnaire” which it described as pushing for “House rule changes.” The document does do that. But it also does a lot more. It seeks substantive commitments from the next speaker that would effectively send the entire country into a tailspin.

For example, the document seeks a commitment from the next speaker to tie any increase in the debt ceiling to cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

The House Freedom Caucus also wants the next speaker to commit to numerous conditions on any agreement to avoid a government shutdown:
