We often partner with Moms Demand Action and allied groups. The gun fetishists are single-issue voters, and they never miss an election. We have to register more voters with gun sense and make sure they vote!

I have been giving thanks for these things before my evening meal.

I was thinking about a comment you made earlier, regarding our voting rights/voting apathy, and remembering when I was in Peace Corps Ecuador, a thousand years ago, during Nixon’s presidency. One of the tiendas I often visited was run by a very solid, mature woman who often took me to task for things Nixon was doing. She asked me once, why it is that our country, which has the choice of leaders, has chosen this evil person to lead us. She was furious that we squander our right to representative government, when so many people like her, around the world, have no voice at all.
So again, I light candles of gratitude and hang on President Obama’s words, and count my lucky stars that we are here now. Here at this time in history, and here on the Obama Diary, where sharing this experience is a touchstone in my life.
I’m so glad they highlighted PBO’s description of Pope Francis as having “a big moral imagination” I thought that was a very apt and interesting way to describe his bringing a more inclusive and expansive attitude to the papacy.
