gm Chips & all – thanks again for all the news – have the grandbabe in residence – some welcome family love. Her latest saying “I love you so much” – a welcome respite from other events.
3 years old – I think she knows the effect of her words 🙂 – this is a smart one – JEB! should take note
I cannot imagine living without her – the anguish of those impacted by “stuff” is beyond understanding by anyone (including me) who has not been there.
JEB! Preventing the death of fetus by imposing laws on the rights/liberty of grown women but not to prevent deaths of 2yr olds because it hurts business.
The schooling on Julie Edwards question about Putin outsmarting POTUS was comprehensive and brilliant. The ending was pitch perfect. Putin has high poll ratings inside Russia. The beltway is impressed because high poll ratings tend to be a measure of success. But POTUS says that’s easy to do when you have a state owned media. OUCH
Good evening Chips & TOD! I missed my President’s presser – but from reading the comments, I get the sense that it’s something I shouldn’t miss. So off to watch the video – thanks Chips for posting 🙂 🙂
WOW..just finished watching, and yes, you and meta (and the others) are so right about this fantastic Presser! I enjoyed every last minute of it. It’s a thing of beauty to see our President schooling these damn overgrown adolescents, while teaching the country as whole. I will probably watch it AGAIN tomorrow…and SUNDAY! 🙂 🙂
Just wanted to stop by. I haven’t been around much and I seldom have a chance to read past threads here, specially since I am not allowed to access TOD at work. I can, however, access other sites. (My guess is there is a certain word in the name of this site that triggers an alarm, like diary?)
I know a lot of people have a low opinion of the Catholic Church, and that is understandable. A lot of we Catholics also do. And I know the Church’s stance on things like gay marriage, abortion and birth control hasn’t changed since Pope Francis comes along. But I am sick and tired of people saying that Francis is a fraud because the Church still has those stances on the subject. I have heard him called an arch-conservative, a lying SOB and a raging homophobe.
Would a raging homophobe tell his flock to stop making homosexuality and gay marriage a top priority in their anti-whatever speeches? Would a raging homophobe, when asked about homosexuality, answer “Who am I to judge?” Major teachings of the Church do not get overturned overnight. And they usually require a large majority of Bishops and Cardinals to make progress on that point. Believe it or not, the Pope is not a dictator. Like the President, he has to pick his battles and create a support base, which he is doing, as he can by putting into place more officials who think the way he does. It may not result in major changes during his term as Pope, but it increases the likelihood of a similar thinking Pope following him.
Although I was raised Catholic, I am not practicing but I really loved the Pope’s visit. It gave us a chance to see him interact with ordinary Americans in various settings and he did so with humility and grace. His words were full of idealism and hope and I felt inspired by him. I was especially grateful for his visit to the prison and Independence Hall and his address to Congress. Even though there has been controversy surrounding his visit this week, it’s now very clear that this was not his intention. Even so, I never once thought I regretted following his journey here. As POTUS said today, he is a good man with a warm heart and a big moral imagination. This nation could use a LOT more of that.
“Major teachings of the Church do not get overturned overnight …. Like the President, he has to pick his battles and create a support base, which he is doing, as he can by putting into place more officials who think the way he does. It may not result in major changes during his term as Pope, but it increases the likelihood of a similar thinking Pope following him.”
Couldn’t agree more, Japa. The notion that the head of a centuries-old institution, hardly known for dramatic change, can click his fingers and change things overnight is beyond silly. He’s had an amazing impact, his legacy will be wonderful, he deserves to be saluted for what he is trying to do.
So proud of our President. He is a decent man, and we love him so. I know on Jan. 20, 2017, our TOD family and the world will miss this wonderful man. I am grateful that I am a part of this beautiful TOD family for this great human being.HZ
Yes OG, it’s not all “Portlandia” in Oregon. My Uncle (husband of one of my aunts) lives there and he is super right wing. Every time I see in my Gmail that he is online, I imagine he’s forwarding some Repub talking points/conspiracy theories (not to me though, he knows better as 99% of his wife’s family members are long time liberals 🙂 ).
The populated areas of Portland metro, Eugene, and Willamette Valley are liberal. (My town, the capital, is a mixed bag.) But the rural and small towns are quite conservative. Roseburg is in the Southern and Eastern Oregon swath of red domination. We have five Congressional Reps, four are Dems, one (Southern and Eastern Oregon) is GOP.
Thanks Bill. How did a conceal carry become a law in a state that is generally painted as a generous blue? And how did that truther sheriff get elected?

The sneaky new voter suppression tool in North Carolina, uncovered by one of our own
byJoan McCarter
What Busa has found is illustrated in the above image: a systematic and very sophisticated effort to make the simple act of going to the polls much, much more difficult for North Carolina’s black voters. From Busa’s presentation:
North Carolina Republicans have been actively moving the goalposts—they’ve been moving polling places around like a crazed monkey on crack. They have been cutting numbers of polling places in some counties, increasing numbers in other counties. There has been no systematic analysis of the effect of this. All I’ve been able to find in any news outlet is, you know: a little local newspaper, say Winston-Salem’s, will say: “the number of early voting sites is twelve this year…by the way, it was fifteen last year.” That’s it. Nobody has taken an overall view. […]
The headline outcome from our analysis is that in 2014 white voters—71% of the electorate in North Carolina—had to travel an additional 119,000 miles from their homes to their nearest Early Voting locations…which is approximately equivalent to halfway from the Earth to the Moon.
I hear you ask, “how did it affect black voters?” Well, black voters—22% of the electorate—had to travel to the moon and halfway home again, 370,000 miles, in 2014, to get to their nearest Early Voting place. […]
Social equity. Rev. Barber was talking last night about how we should make moral arguments; we shouldn’t be talking about liberals and conservatives, we should be talking about right and wrong. And the right and wrong of it is that the well-to-do, like many of us in this room, have a much higher degree of mobility and a lot more freedom to say “I’m not coming into work…I’ll be a half an hour late, because I’m going to stop off and vote first.” Wage slaves in a low-wage job, which a lot of people of color are stuck in today, don’t have that opportunity, to tell the manager of McDonald’s “I’m going to be a half hour late today because I’m going to vote.” So, I really insist that excessive distance-to-poll is a poll tax. It costs you money to go vote, and the more money it costs, the fewer poor people vote.
Actually AMK, Bill was showing his true colors a long time ago, when he remarked in 1992 that (his Democratic Primary opponent at that time) Governor Mario Cuomo acted like a mafioso:
Isn’t this the Kentucky 2014 playbook?
Alison G said Bill Clinton who she calls The President, is all the President she needs to win.
You know, a real President. Not a black guy.
I am Not a Sanders fan.
But to be Clear:
Bernie has voted for and supports gun registration laws, closing the gun show and internet loopholes
Bernie has also voted for bans on military weapons in civilian hands. Automatic assault rifles and large magazines.
I know I will vote. I want Joe to run as he would be the best to protect and carry on PBO’s policies. If Joe does not run I am perplexed on who I would vote for. I think by default I would vote for Martin O’Malley, although I know his polling numbers give him no chance. I am not a Hillary fan. I also feel Bernie is a one trick pony with no Congressional record to point to. Maybe PBO’s comment today about needing to be a one issue voter to concentrate on gun regulations helps me narrow down my vote. Bernie has not supported sensible gun reform in the recent past whereas MO’M and HRC have been strong supporters. I still say Run Joe Run!
Hey Chips. Great presser.
A most excellent one COS, I wish he held them every day 🙂
So do I Chips.
Saluti a tutti!
Marvelous, brilliant press conference by our President.
I missed it. Hope I can see it later.
You must see it, dahling. It was a wowzer.
Jackie, you can see it on the ‘live’ video – just slide the thingie at the bottom to the start:
what my grandmother would call…being wrong and strong…
I wasn’t able to hear the presser but I fear for this country after this President is no longer President. He is the only adult in this country.
I was mesmerized by PBO. He was dropping mics with every answer. Just amazing.
Can’t wait to watch it.
gm Chips & all – thanks again for all the news – have the grandbabe in residence – some welcome family love. Her latest saying “I love you so much” – a welcome respite from other events.
Ah, the little sweetheart! 🙂 A greeting like that would wash all the ugly madness away!
AHHHHH, how fortunate to have such a SWEET presence in your home!!
3 years old – I think she knows the effect of her words 🙂 – this is a smart one – JEB! should take note
I cannot imagine living without her – the anguish of those impacted by “stuff” is beyond understanding by anyone (including me) who has not been there.
Precious!
In one word 🙂
Are sheriffs elected in Oregon?
Yes
Thanks Bill. How easy is it to get rid of a bad guy…
There recall provisions in all counties I believe.
.The Roseburg area is mainly Conservative Republicans thus the present sheriff.
JEB! should pray for laryngitis or just STFU all together
Ha! Laryngitis would be a good choice!
Oh my – drowned children & murdered students, but we forced a family to keep a brain dead loved one alive – what a heritage to leave behind.
JEB! Preventing the death of fetus by imposing laws on the rights/liberty of grown women but not to prevent deaths of 2yr olds because it hurts business.
Pretty much his campaign bumper sticker! Ugh.
Au ⭐ for COS 😉
Congrats!
Hey Jebbie……Stuff Happens
They have Names. They have Families. They Matter. Their Lives were shortened.

Yeah babee😘

clearly the imbecile has no heart and no brains;
he should have listened to his mama => no more shrubs;
and he was supposed to be “the smart one” ????
Good evening Chips & TOD! I missed my President’s presser – but from reading the comments, I get the sense that it’s something I shouldn’t miss. So off to watch the video – thanks Chips for posting 🙂 🙂
HF, I am on my third viewing.
WOW..just finished watching, and yes, you and meta (and the others) are so right about this fantastic Presser! I enjoyed every last minute of it. It’s an incredible tour de force of pure intellect and wit!

Hope all’s good with ya.
And, like PBO, he will probably continue to facilitate change. We are in the midst of a continuing story.
The way it went down leaves me with loads of suspicious Mind…….hmm?
typical bush. let some one else clean up the mess we create.
#StuffHappens – Like my sliding poll numbers.
😳 I should have scrolled up

HZ!!!! How are you doing?
Only the RWNJs could turn the visit of a Religious Leader into a political event. They have no shame.
Out of the mouths of babes
Grandbabe found her Peppa Pig phone at the bottom of the toy box. I was trying to get her dressed as they were leaving
“Don’t interrupt Nanna – I am on the phone”
Mother of grandbabe looking slightly green 🙂 🙂
She is adorable!
🙂
I was kinda shocked that the librul OR has a concealed carry in the campus where this happened.
To the good guys who packed the heat – So, what happened?
They realized the cops would probably kill them if they tried to use ’em.
no shit, sherlocks.
There are areas of Oregon especially in rural Oregon that feel very Red.
Yes OG, it’s not all “Portlandia” in Oregon. My Uncle (husband of one of my aunts) lives there and he is super right wing. Well, this explains a lot.
Translation: “Don’t stop thinkin’ about the 90’s (you know, those good ole’ days when the first black president was white)
PRECISELY
WV is where the C’s started showing their true ‘colors’ in 2008 election. Gotta grift for those appalachian votes.
Actually AMK, Bill was showing his true colors a long time ago, when he remarked in 1992 that (his Democratic Primary opponent at that time) Governor Mario Cuomo acted like a mafioso:

uh huh
Isn’t this the Kentucky 2014 playbook?
Alison G said Bill Clinton who she calls The President, is all the President she needs to win.
You know, a real President. Not a black guy.
That’s certainly how it feels to me. Sickening stupidity.
I love the Subaru commercial with the guy and his dog and the bucket list…and, I don’t even have a pet.
Subaru does good commercials. Not totally objective though. In the past, we’ve had three Subaru’s and liked them all. 😄
didn’t subaru down the shutters 2-3 years back? or was it some other car maker?
I saw sanders spoke, kinda, sorta, spoke for gun control. Has Hillary? Or is the triangulation still going on?
What I’ve heard from Hillary, she has gone directly at the NRA and the GOP. Not minced words at all.
ok, good. I am glad that she is not parsing words on this one at least.
I am Not a Sanders fan.
But to be Clear:
Bernie has voted for and supports gun registration laws, closing the gun show and internet loopholes
Bernie has also voted for bans on military weapons in civilian hands. Automatic assault rifles and large magazines.
But I also read that he voted for a bill that excluded gun makers from liabilities.
Yes. And other votes we won’t agree with. His position is too nuanced for me.
But nuanced. Not crazy.
But that one was a biggie that literally gave away the key to gun makers to do whatever they wanted. What nuance?
I know I will vote. I want Joe to run as he would be the best to protect and carry on PBO’s policies. If Joe does not run I am perplexed on who I would vote for. I think by default I would vote for Martin O’Malley, although I know his polling numbers give him no chance. I am not a Hillary fan. waiting is a hard thing!
