There it is; he like others have come at PBO and has come up against his “spine of steel.” I would really like to be the proverbial fly on the wall to witness this meeting. PBO has made Putin his bitch.
WOW! You do such an incredible job in summarizing these speeches in tweets. I have become spoiled in knowing that you, Chips & TOD will have the coverage, so I don’t worry about missing anything. Thank you so much!
I wouldn’t try to figure it out. Just because Moses is on the wall of the House chamber, doesn’t mean some of the folks in government ever notice! đ
I love this address by Pope Francis. I grew up Catholic and entered the seminary at a young age. (I’m now a “recovering Catholic” convert to Episcopal Church.) I was influenced heavily by the example and works of Thomas Merton on the integration of contemplation and peace and justice. Also influenced by Dorothy Day’s example and teachings on social justice and care for the poor. And his reference to Martin Luther King was also inspiring, though he is a globally known and loved figure. The pope’s words were direct and unflinching, but not divisive, a challenge to us all to look upon the face of the immigrant with compassion and justice, and to see the care of the planet as a point of solidarity with all humanity and not a point of divisiveness.
Thank you for telling us about your background, Bill. I appreciate and agree with your perspective…..”pope’s words were direct and unflinching, but not divisive..” Exactly.
I like many things about this pope, but for everything I find that I like, I also ind so many things that I disagree with him on. Especially when it comes to abortion. I am tired with the way religion tries to push their views in a woman’s uterus and tell them what is moral or amoral in this regard.
one of my favorite speeches by the President is his speech at the Commencement of Notre Dame..his invitation to speak was considered very controversial because of his stance on abortion
the President dealt with the struggles around abortion n his speech…worth a listen
I remember this speech fairly well. I will listen to it again today because every one of his speeches lift my spirits. Try to avoid listening in public places because they tend to give me leaky eye syndrome.
I still and always find the birth control issue unacceptable. If there are concerns about the planet one of the major issues is population. If there are concerns about care of children – one of the major issues are women having unwanted children. Education and easily accessed birth control remove most unwanted pregnancies.
With you on this, 99ts, especially as most men refuse to accept responsibility for impregnating a woman (“she got herself pregnant, right?”), and too many men then refuse to help support the child. Make sexuality is a serious problem all over the planet, and human population control is an issue NO world leader is willing to address, never mind tackle in a realistic way.
Boehner kept crying and McConnell was sad because after the Pope (a break) he still needs to deal with the infidels in Congress. That is the T-baggers.
I have to think that this contact with Pope Francis and his speech was a validation for Joe of his values and his motivations for being in public life. Perhaps it will help him make his decision.
I have really enjoyed participating in the pope’s visit with all of the TOD ohana, commenters and lurkers.” I had little interest in the previous papal visits (yes, I am old enough to remember at least two) and was even slightly annoyed by all of the worship of a religious figure-head. This new pope, like our PBO, is trying to clean house, speak to and inspire our best selves so that we can tackle many of the world’s ills, and showing us how to first really see and care for the most vulnerable. While I still disagree with his stance on some things (as expected since I am not a Catholic of any shape or form), I always have respect for people who use their positions for the common good.
Thanks to all who have shared this experience with me.
While I disagree with him on the abortion issue, I must note that he is consistent in his desire to “preserve life at all stages” which is vastly different from the hypocritical RWers who harp on abortion, but have very little regard for the preservation of life once a person leaves the womb. His call for the global abolition of the death penalty is something that the so-called pro-lifers would not be in favor of..
It is notable that he made a big point of eliminating the death penalty, which is consistent with the traditional Catholic teaching on pro-life. Cardiinal Bernardin of Chicago once said that “pro-life must be a seamless garment.”
I’m stuffing my lunch into my face on my very short lunch break so I can be ready when the children come back, but I just HAD to take a moment to that you for these awesome tweets! You are the best live tweeter I know. I am not a Catholic and I know I wouldn’t agree with him on everything, but I can deal with disagreement when there is so much acknowledgement of common ground, and when the other person is dealing from a positive place of respect for all. Yes, his stance on abortion is not mine, but at LEAST he is consistent in calling for the end of the death penalty, and ALSO by showing deep compassion and concern for every person of every race, religion (or none), economic class, and sees that government is there to SERVE. Compare that to people who are “pro-life” but act against the good of everyone not like them once they are born. Congress, you are the face of our people to the work. America, you are not great just because you exist, you are great when you work to lift ALL people.
I havenât read this article, fully, yet â too busy laughing that finally when Catholic Republicans who are running for President are asked, âWhich American woman should be on the $10 bill?â they can say âDorothy Day.â Instead of Thatcher or their wives or the lady next door.
About Day (something for everybody, Iâd joke, and Whatâs Not to Love?):
âThough she was raised Episcopalian and became an agnostic in her youth, as she âtook a Marxist lover, joined the young labor movement and wrote for far-left newspapers like the Masses,â a relationship and the birth of her daughter led to the church. In the 1930s, in the depths of the Depression, she launched the periodical The Catholic Worker and a philosophy to go along with it: pro-union, anti-poverty, pacifist, anti-government. She even went so far as to refer to it as anarchism, believing that individuals could be empowered to do good on their own.â
Firstly, thank you {{{{{Chips & NW}}}}} for the wonderful posts about Pope Francis & even more good news about #OBAMACARE!!!
Won’t likely have time to savor the Pope’s remarks at the WH & Congress until late tomorrow, but am very pleased, and not the least surprised by the snippets I’m seeing in various tweets.
Had time for 1 tweet along with RT/Fav a few ….
Without any doubt @VP!
You as 45th Pres & @Pontifex are the perfect team for humanity & you're the best successor to @POTUS.
cc @DrBiden
yup. he isn’t afraid to own up the fuckups in his religion. To paraphrase Gandhi, it’s not the christianity that I hate, it’s the extreme fundies. We have our hindu fundies now starting to raise hell here.
I was disgusted that an India court ordered a girl gang-raped because her brother married outside his cast⌠Can’t remember the exact details but I was depressed all day over it.
Yes, maryl1 – I was reminded of that again, yesterday, when the two were sitting quietly next to each other at the White House. Neither had to speak to or acknowledge the other every moment, both “their own men,” both comfortable with their roles and chosen paths, both elected by their peers, both who rose to the challenge, men for the ages.
And I imagine neither having any trouble sleeping at night, which – as my grandmother used to say – “is a sign of a clear conscience.”
Oh! There is the Boner – the weight of his hangover must b hard to bear, ‘devout Catholic that he is – appalled he took a seat before Pope Francis, I had to take a break after seeing that. Unfathomable lack of common courtesy, unfathomable. Mornin’ y’all.
I get your drift. But I think many knew what they were doing, while many probably did not. Personally, I’m for not comparing the thinking of U.S. cardinals with all the others or even among themselves, because some are lacking and some aren’t.
Pope Francis was apparently the College of Cardinals’ “second choice” when Benedict was elected before him. Apparently, Francis was due to retire when he was 75 years old, but that was not approved, so … And Benedict (more a theological scholar than pastor) had other plans, as well, before JPII called him to Rome and asked him to hang in there, and then …
Life has other plans for all of us, sometimes! This Pope’s election at this time seems well planned, for sure.
the rethugs starting to clap on the mention of abortion and then abruptly stopping when the pope pivoted to elimination of death sentence speaks volumes.
See ya all later!
Another First-n-run! Congrats Chips.
See you later đ
thanks Ms Chips…have a great day
See you in the evening time
So now Putin wants to make nice with PBO — where’s all the bravado of 2014? LMAO!
There it is; he like others have come at PBO and has come up against his “spine of steel.” I would really like to be the proverbial fly on the wall to witness this meeting. PBO has made Putin his bitch.
Oh CEB you say it so perfectly. h you
John Boehner is still crying…
Of course. He’s a walking puddle.
Waving to crowd from the balcony (Hi Donna!( with VP Joe at his side. đ
A very interesting speech. Some parts I agreed with, some I didn’t, and that’s freaking awesome!
Fab tweets NW – and the last one – Pope Francis votes for peace
Fabulousssssssssssssss…Fabuloussssssssss TWEETS….from the “Legend”
Outstanding tweetage Nerdy! You’re amazing! Thank you!
Wonderful, magnificent, perfect tweet summaries. Thank you, Nerdy.
Unbelievable Tweets NW…… đ¸

Did I imagine it – or is there a carving of moses in your house of reps? Or was something else being shown?
Yes, Moses, “one of great historical lawgivers … ”
Thanks jacqueline – I find the overlap of religion/government in the US not what I ever expected.
I wouldn’t try to figure it out. Just because Moses is on the wall of the House chamber, doesn’t mean some of the folks in government ever notice! đ

well said, bill.
There was a very good discussion of the Pope on the first segment of Charlie Rose last night. I’ll bring it here when it becomes available.

Belated hello MP – need your moving packing strength. Supposedly moving in about 7 weeks – will be so relieved when it is done.
I was glad to see the prominence of VP Joe Biden in this event. He was positively glowing while Boehner and McConnell were acutely uncomfortable.
Boehner kept crying and McConnell was sad because after the Pope (a break) he still needs to deal with the infidels in Congress. That is the T-baggers.
Yep
I sure hope this has helped build back our Joe’s emotional sea legs.
I have to think that this contact with Pope Francis and his speech was a validation for Joe of his values and his motivations for being in public life. Perhaps it will help him make his decision.
Absolutely!

Yes.
Rick Santorum is also consistent with his pro-life views actually. Maybe not as much as the pope but Santorum is also against the death penalty.

Good choice, Bill!
I LOVE this pic…could Nerdy or Chips please front-page when an opportunity presents itself? Thanks đ đ
Also, I look forward to hearing a first-hand report from our Donnadem who had the privilege of being present at the Capitol for the Pope’s address!!
Awesome!

bb much later today, hopefully ….
Truthfully, if I were right there with the Pope (or VP Biden or President Obama), I’d be weeping like Boehner, myself.
But I’m not Speaker of the House, representin’.
But his are crocodile kind.
Oh boy!
So many wonderful moments in his speech. Just magnificent.
Here’s one of my favorites:
I loved this, and I noticed no standing ovation from Congress on it. So many of those people are on the take from the arms industry.
they are literally their peons in the corrupt congress.
Yep.
I also took that as guns sold here, locally, our own massacres & domestic craziness.
hear that kkklowns?
I liked how he mentioned that no religion is immune from extremism.
yup. he isn’t afraid to own up the fuckups in his religion. To paraphrase Gandhi, it’s not the christianity that I hate, it’s the extreme fundies. We have our hindu fundies now starting to raise hell here.

It wasn’t a court, it was a village council.
sorry my bad⌠Hope they got stopped from being able to do that.
The Son of God came into the world as a homeless person. – Pope Francis
rimshot.
booooooooooom!
President Obama and the Pope: cut from the same cloth, made for this time.
Yes, maryl1 – I was reminded of that again, yesterday, when the two were sitting quietly next to each other at the White House. Both understanding that their purpose is to work every day to make this world better.
Both who had mothers who loved and guided them!!
that’s a shot at the bedwetting eewropeans.
St. Patrick’s church hired guys from local homeless shelters to help spruce up the church & space where current event is taking place.
And I prefer those popes that don’t preach about the poor.
Great tweets, NW!

Rudeness personified. Ugh.
Amen, JO’B.
Not sure, but it looked to me as though the Pope even rolled up the car window by himself ~ before exiting the Fiat, outside the church.
Ha. No pretension – love it.
I received an Homeless Jesus as a gift in July. Precious. Powerful. Sad, too.
Pope Francis in the USA-Visit to the Charity Center and meeting with the homeless.
So proud of our delegation!
Great!
I often wonder if the cardinals who elected the Pope have regrets on electing someone so unlike themselves.
I get your drift. But I think many knew what they were doing, while many probably did not. Personally, I’m for not comparing the thinking of U.S. cardinals with all the others or even among themselves, because some are lacking and some aren’t.

They sure need his ‘touch’.
