    There once was a science nerd named Dudette
    Whose knowledge made OUR brains feel all wet
    While enjoying the Earth
    She’s celebrating her birth
    (And probably hoisting one with Neil deGrasse Tyson, I’d bet)

    they say be careful what you wish for;

    what if the person who is in favor of fewer Dem debates now ends up doing worse than expected and they feel a need for more airtime in form of debates?

    by that time, it may be very hard to change the rules and organize other Dem debates

    I think President Obama and Vice President Biden have spoiled me for other Democratic politicians forevermore. Trying to watch a little of HRC at the NH Democratic Party Convention from earlier today, and she sounds so shrill to me, I can barely stand it. My ears hurt.

      I have the same problem with HRC. Her body language turns me off.

        I don’t necessarily disagree with much of what she or Bernie or Martin O’M say, it’s just the way they say it. I want to be pulled in, not shoved along. Maybe I’m the shallow one!

          September 20, 2015 at 1:17 am

          Oh I don’t even listen to Bernie. O’Malley gave a great speech at the DNC. Yep I think it’s mostly a style issue and not a content problem.

            I also think it’s not just tone for me (the first turn-off), it’s how they frame their platforms. HRC seems to occasionally now to be mentioning the Obama presidency, but none of them are actually showing much continuity between everything he’s accomplished and what they think they’ll accomplish. Not much at all. Big turn-off, and another missed opportunity for these Democrats.

          It’s the positive attitude that comes from PBO & Flotus for everyone that we like to hear. BIG reason that our PM was rolled – people were sick of the non stop negatives. This is why Trump is finding favor with the GOP – all the congress/governor GOP people have been doing negative things for years.

    • September 20, 2015 at 8:42 am

      I always feel like I’m being lectured when I listen to HRC and Sanders and to some degree O’Malley. It’s a tad condescending.

      PBO and FLOTUS project a genuine sincerity and caring. They are OF us, among us, with us. I think it comes from growing up in modest homes with big dreams, and then setting out to make them make them real and staying true to all of it. And what they do is always about building community, never about WINNING this or that or I, I, I. I trust them. And love them dearly.

        GM, Meta! I agree with your assessment of the O’s and I do think the ‘staying true’ is a big part of it. They, both, are very good at seeing the world beyond themselves; not many politicians do IMO. At least, when other politicians see outside themselves they usually see ‘inferior’ citizens that *they* are coming to rescue and they usually start using simplistic promises and language both of which generally grate on my ears and my psyche.

        • September 20, 2015 at 9:31 am

          GM, vc!

          Have you ever noticed that when PBO and MO travel, they always go out of their way to connect with the youth? Go out of their way to listen and encourage, inform and inspire? And they use themselves as examples of what it means to be from humble beginnings, work hard and never give up. It’s not done in a rescue kind of way. It’s done in a way that celebrates their roots and acknowledges their communities, working to have them believe in themselves for their own sake. And HOPE. Always HOPE.

            Oh, I’ve noticed! 🙂

            😉 Have you noticed that other candidates have noticed too? We-ell, *they* have noticed that the Obamas talk about humble beginnings so now *everyone* has had humble beginnings. They may all be true but for me they often sound scripted and forced and imitative….. and shared for brownie points rather than as encouragement. {Lord, I’m biased! 😀 }

            • September 20, 2015 at 9:56 am

              Right beside you, I’m afraid. Yes, some are sitting on enormous wealth and yet say they are just like us!

                And there in a nutshell you have my pet peeve with most of them! They speak to us/me like they think our/my brain is out to lunch….every time. Bugs me no end! I don’t have a problem with their wealth – I have a problem with them thinking voters have no brain, or eyes.

                • September 20, 2015 at 10:09 am

                  I don’t have a problem with wealth per se but in a politician, it tends to breed a perspective of privilege, whether wittingly or not. Both the Obamas and the Bidens truly understand the middle class not just because they grew up that way but they have hung onto those values. It’s only been in the last couple of years that POTUS started wearing better suits and newer shoes!!

                  Having said all that, I hope the Obamas go on to earn more money when they leave office because they’ve EARNED it. They’ve sacrificed quite a lot to govern this beast of a country.

                    A-men to most of this.

                    The privilege perspective – a measure of selfishness really – I think is there in the core of the person, some even before they get the wealth (if they weren’t born into it). I think they think if everyone had the opportunity to climb, it would diminish the importance of how *they* managed it. I think of Jindal and that Nikki Haley person in this category. I might even argue that in the case of politicians some develop their sense of privilege because of the perks that come with the job. Notice how even the ones who supposedly want smaller government are themselves always dying to get back into office.
