      Me neither, prettyfoot.
      Somebody please explain it.

    • September 9, 2015 at 7:31 pm

It means that, despite the GOP House’s ‘hail Mary’ attempt to delay the vote, by conjuring even more bullsh*t as is their typical approach to everything substantive, McConnell has filed cloture setting the clock running for a vote to approve/filibuster cloture, followed by a vote on the actual legislation if the DEMS don’t filibuster. The cloture clock interval is set so that the earliest the cloture vote can happen is Friday.

It’s likely that DEMS would support cloture if McConnell agrees to a 60 vote requirement on the legislation. Otherwise, I think the DEMS can sustain a block on cloture. Either way, the Senate bill would not be forwarded to the House.

Senator Reid is in the driver’s seat on this one. No way is he going to allow cloture with only a simple majority vote on the actual legislation – even though he has the votes, as does Leader Pelosi, to sustain the President’s veto.

This is the latest indication from Senate Dems that they are hoping McConnell will agree to a 60 margin vote on the legislation. If he did, they could vote it as early as tomorrow afternoon – i.e., no need to run out the cloture clock.

      bbl …

Thank you, Bob. I think I have a handle on this, maybe.

Dems would rather they defeat the negative Iran Disapproval without PBO having to veto.
The Dems would prefer an up or down vote needing 60 to pass.
The Dems—with 42 votes locked in, more or less, would then win by defeating the bill on its merits and PBO will not have to veto.

Here is the difference. The Headlines.
        Either
GOP fails to pass Disapproval Vote. GOP fails. We like this one.
Dems succeed in defeating Disapproval Vote. Also good.
Dems force PBO to veto will of the majority Not good.

There is no way the GOP can actually win this one.
But there are lots of different ways to sort of win or almost win or whatever it is they are telling themselves. Inside politics at its ugliest.

      • September 9, 2015 at 8:13 pm

BINGO. I just got in and seeing this now and I think I’m kind of surprised that McConnell filed. I guess I thought he was going to come up with more ridiculous tricks and delays but I guess reality set in and he realized the clock is running out. We’ll see how this unfolds.

O/T Why would a mother do this when you consider that this will remain on record and may return to ‘haunt’ her daughter? The story was shared her a long time ago, but the verdict is recent, I believe.

I say that we (Americans with healthcare) send Boner a bill in the amount that he has wasted in taxpayer money suing the govt over Obamacare!! If he’s doing that, he’s NOT doing the job he got sent to do…only fair that we should sue for wasting OUR MONEY!

And this, dear readers, is why YOU VOTE EVERY GODDAMNED TIME, and vote for people with a (D) by their names. Not because Democrats are perfect. Not because Democrats are paragons of virtue. But because Democrats are not batshit insane, and actually are well versed in the art of governing. And, most of the time, will pass legislation which is actually pretty good, and perfects the Union that bit more.

As one who is also going through grief, this reaction from the VP is normal, and will not keep him from doing what he knows he ought to do. Those chokeups can be triggered by anything, but for some reason, they are also cleansing and strengthening.

      • September 9, 2015 at 9:27 pm

Sending highest healing thoughts to you, carolyn.

I’m gratified that VP Biden can express his grief as he chooses. He is doing what he needs to do.

That woman has the worse advisers in the history of Presidential campaigns. She needs to fire everyone of them. She has a hawkish tendency which I think is an overcompensation for being feared as weak because she’s a woman participating in a man’s political world. She is insulated and much too controlled. I just struggle to relate to her.

      • September 9, 2015 at 10:11 pm

I agree with every word you’ve said and it makes me scared to death to think about what we face. If she is our nominee, someone is going to have to do a major intervention. I mean this.

Stephen Colbert is back on the air and all is right with the world 🙂

Loved the opening, loved the comment about his Mom’s souvenir pennant from the 1963 March on Washington (he was in her womb at the time):
“Sadly, civil rights only won the pennant that year….Racism won the World Series.”

And loved, loved, loved “Everyday People” It set the tone for the show going forward.

Here is the extended interview with George Clooney, with an interesting fact about how Stephen’s “Ambiguously Gay Duo” character on SNL cartoon was inspired by Clooney’s Batman 🙂 :
