Just spoke to CanadaBarb and told her about Scott Walker’s “wall between U.S. and Canada” idea, which she hadn’t heard. But her husband had, and said in the background, “Canada needs a wall to keep out those crazy American Republicans.”

    Yep.

Alaska: The 49th State’s Place in History

    // …………………………….

But just how did this treasure trove of national resources and beauty become a part of our union? While the President is en route, let’s do a quick historical recap.

    March 30, 1867

Secretary of State William H. Seward signed a treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska for $7.2 million. Despite the bargain deal (roughly two cents an acre), the purchase was ridiculed in Congress and in the press as โ€œSewardโ€™s folly,โ€ and President Andrew Johnsonโ€™s โ€œpolar bear garden.โ€ Nevertheless, the Senate ratified the purchase, adding a tremendous landmass (one-fifth the size of the rest of the U.S.) to America.

Cancelled check in the amount of $7.2 million, for the purchase of Alaska, issued August 1, 1868; Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury; Record Group 217; National Archives.

Despite a slow start in settlement, the discovery of gold in the late 19th century prompted thousands of Americans to migrate to the territory hoping to strike it rich. Alaska, rich in natural resources and beauty, has been contributing to American prosperity ever since.

    ……………… //

Does that mean Pootie Poot will do to AK what he did in Crimea? I bet he would if $arah Palin wasn’t watching him because she can see Russia from land in AK and when Putin flies over the state where she was once governor of also too. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s some of the back story, if interested, on ABC’s “virtual audience” with the Pope, and it relates to his trip to America.

Thanks, JO’B. I wouldn’t have seen this otherwise. I’m tone deaf but the teenager’s singing sounded good to me; wish they’d let her finish a verse.

Sounded good to me, too. Loved the way the Pope told her to be courageous! This is part of an ABC-TV special that’s airing this Friday evening.

I can’t wait until the Pope pays a little visit to our Members of Congress. Hoping they all look a little seasick after that. Joe Biden gets to sit behind him at the Joint Session, so that’ll be cool.

                August 31, 2015 at 11:59 pm

Who knows, a visit with the Pope may just give VP Joe the final impetus/inner strength he needs to get into the presidential race. I imagine Joe saying God gave him a tap on his shoulder via the Pope. ๐Ÿ˜€ That would be something!

                  September 1, 2015 at 12:31 am

He might be the first Democrat to say “God tapped him on the shoulder,” but, hey, sounds good. ๐Ÿ™‚

                    September 1, 2015 at 12:37 am

After all, GOPs make it seem like the call by god is exclusively for them. Should this happen for VP Joe, Dems could lay claim that God felt so strongly about VP Joe’s participation he sent a well-respected earthly messenger for the entire country to see. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Check the timing of PopeF’s visit. The more I think about it, the more I’m convincing myself that’s exactly how it’ll happen. ๐Ÿ˜€ *Now* I understand why Joe hasn’t felt the final nudge yet…..Pope Franc is bringing it!

                    ๐Ÿ˜€ – Yes, I’m going to bed.

Isn’t it weird that Ben Carson is the second highest polling candidate in the GOP race? They seemed so racist against PBO yet support an AA man in their own party.

    • August 31, 2015 at 11:14 pm

Obama Grandma, there are racists, Ben Carson will not be elected by them you can count on that. Carson has become a Obama hater like them, every chance he gets he is disrespecting President Obama, so they will pretend they like him but they will not select this black man as their nominee. Count on that.

token black candie a la herman cain last cycle. he will be gone by the time next ‘polls’ turn up.

    • 124 0388jojothecat
      August 31, 2015 at 11:34 pm

I think the people they are polling is just telling the pollsters lies. These GOP supporters hate brown people and if white Democrats in the south would never vote for a black man why the hell with white Republicans. What world do we live in when white Republicans would vote for an AA Republican candidate for president over a white one?

Is AK the 50th state that the kenyan has visited? 50/50?

  26. August 31, 2015 at 11:35 pm

I made several trips to Alaska between 1997 and 2007, a 20 year period. During all that time the people of Alaska I met always referred to their mountain as Denali, both native and non-native. I never heard it referred to as Mt. McKinley. That faux outrage from the GOP is so totally bogus.

Lots of TOD folks and beyond have challenges at present, but I wonder if I could once again ask for y’all to squeeze in more good thoughts and prayers for my son … he has his next surgery (the first of two, to close the tear in his chest cavity, a “not uncommon” post-op complication from removal of his right lung in June, since two interim procedures didn’t fully work) on Sept. 15. But because the tumor they found in June was so large, the oncologist wants to go ahead now and start looking around to make sure he is, indeed, fully cancer free. Tomorrow morning, he has MRIs and a PET Scan ordered by the oncologist. I know this will go well, but a few extra good wishes for him can’t hurt! Thanks in advance. Love y’all.

Quotes attributed to President McKinley … the GOP won’t like this, when they find out (as someone on twitter wrote tonight, “in a meme three years from now”)!

“War should never be entered upon until every agency of peace has failed.”

“The mission of the United States is one of benevolent assimilation.”
