‘My Heart And Soul Are Pretty Well Banged Up’

VP Biden:

“We’re dealing at home with … whether or not there is the emotional fuel at this time to run. If I were to announce to run, I have to be able to commit to all of you that I would be able to give it my whole heart and my whole soul, and right now, both are pretty well banged up.”

“I’m not trying to skirt your question. That’s the truth of the matter, but believe me, I’ve given this a lot of thought and dealing internally with the family on how we do this.”

He has more than earned the right to if he chooses, not run. His and his family’s health and well being should always come first. They have given more than enough to this country.

You just keep on keeping on, Vice President Joe Biden. We love you!

Exactly. And I can’t ask Joe Biden to do anything I might not want to do myself, in his shoes. If he’s in, I’m in. If not, he still rocks.

  4. August 26, 2015 at 8:18 pm

If this quote is accurate, it doesn’t sound at all encouraging. This is not how you launch a campaign, by saying you’re not 100% sure you can do it. He’s not the kind of guy who would put himself at such a disadvantage right out of the gate. He’s speaking from his heart and I’m hearing he’s not convinced. I really hope I’m just overreacting. My question is, who on the DNC leaked this and why? Who does this help?

On the other hand, he’s indicating it’s still an open question. He may just be airing concerns that are foremost in his mind right now and he will know more when he meets with fundraisers during Labor Day weekend. I keep thinking of how Joe always quotes his father about what you do when you’re knocked down: GET UP! GET UP!

I’m feeling heartbroken at the moment. Heartbroken for him and his family, heartbroken because I think he’d make a magnificent POTUS.

I’m thinking Joe may have decided to tell the Dems this, at this time, because he’s probably being asked over and over “why the wait?” Yes, of course, he’s been considering all of it. But I like to think (without jinxing anything) that he already knows. And that he’s running. He just doesn’t want to announce until the end of summer. This gives him cover, allows him to stretch. (I’ve got to have hope.)

      • August 26, 2015 at 8:29 pm

JO’B – I think your intuitive long view of this is spot on. Certainly leaking a genuine and heartfelt reality such as this would reveal a leak down the pipes. Not that VPB would ever stoop to play a nasty game, it’s just not in him, anywhere. Too well he knows how many people who today say they admire and respect him, would turn on him tomorrow, and that may well and truly be the considering factor – who would have the heart to deal with that crap. Let us continue to pray, to hope, to offer our support. That’s the most and the best we can do, for now.

I am with you Jacquelineoboomer – he’s running. no reason to announce anything until the end of summer. plenty of time to step in the race.

      • August 27, 2015 at 12:40 am

I don’t believe it’s the case. If there is one thing about Joe Biden, it is his sincerity. He doesn’t play games. No. What he said is exactly the truth. And I suspect that He, himself, would be ok but he’s afraid to not be able to take care of his family if he runs. Presidential campaigns are so demanding. Being constantly away from home. The only way he will be able to run is if Jill and the whole clan Biden make it an adventure that they will live ALL TOGETHER. By that I mean that each one of them has the occasion to travel with Joe, participate in some events, have fun behind the scenes in the hotel rooms, etc.

I think that Joe is hearing “the call”, because of what Beau said but also because he knows politics and is seeing Hillary slowly but surely losing steam. And he’s the one who can save the party from defeat, and … maybe even, save America from Trump.

But his family needs him too.

        Poor man.

        • August 27, 2015 at 6:25 am

This will be a true test of how revolutionary the Obama Coalition can be..We may have to support someone who does not garner the hope and passion that VP Biden would….(but after reading LLs essay, we know that we cannot afford to sit this election out).because VP Biden…does not seem to have the desire to run for President….he seems to not have it in his gut and heart to run…it is a grueling time as you know..if he is going to run…these statements are not good…and to tell the truth..i want to know sooner than later…we have waited quite awhile for his decision…

I, too, feel it is a gentle let down to us hopeful Joe Biden for President supporters.

On the other hand—-VPB said end of summer all along. Which is Sept. 22.
The Iran Deal goes into effect on Sept. 17 if Congress fails to stop it.

i don’t doubt that VP Biden is speaking from his heart. Which certainly is aching.
But, please remember that he is also a politician and this may very well be strategizing.

I certainly understand “my heart and soul are pretty well banged up” With what I’ve experienced the past month, I know that sometimes when I go to bed, my body feels like and bruised, physically. This grief takes a long time to get over. It’s only been a few months since Beau’s death, and before that was his illness. That’s what I went through…..at least a year of illness and care, before he was gone. It all takes a tremendous emotional, mental, and physical toll. He has all my admiration and sympathy. This is a difficult decision, and he knows what he’s facing if he does run.

should read “feels battered and bruised physically.”
thank you Meta……I took a positive step today: I went to a grief counselor, and I’m going to join a grief group in two weeks. I know I need help to get through this. People have been loving and kind and very thoughtful. I’m very thankful that I have my little poodle, Chanel. She is good company. We walk twice a day, and those are good times with her.

        • August 26, 2015 at 9:03 pm

I love that idea for you, carolyn. It helps so much to be with others who understand fully and can provide some compassion when you need it.

Carolyn, your personal testimony is very likely exactly how VP Biden is feeling. The Biden family is suffering grief, which doesn’t just go away because some months have passed. In view of this post, before we despair, let’s see if we will miss really something if Biden doesn’t run against Hillary.

Both are progressives in their own ways.

Both have a long record of public service.

Both have tons of FP experience.

Both have run for the highest office before before losing to the better candidate.

Both have served their president rather well when he called for their services.

Now imagine the kkklowns on the other side and their scores on the above points. It’s a no-brainer.

    • August 26, 2015 at 9:01 pm

There is something missing. And that something is trust, authenticity, honesty. Those are are important to me. Very, very important. I can barely tolerate listening to HRC. She’s just got an air of arrogance and manipulation that pings my radar something fierce.

Will I vote? Yes, of course. Will I vote Dem? Yes, of course.

      • 61 hopefruit2
        August 26, 2015 at 9:28 pm

HRC is not particularly progressive, and I don’t really trust her on a lot of issues, but she’s definitely better than the best GOPer, so yes – in 2016, I will vote “DEM” who ever is on the ballot.

Here’s an example of something that gave me pause today: I noticed how quickly and decisively she put out a statement about the VA shooting – when I don’t recall her ever being so forceful about gun control in the wake of other shootings (I may be wrong, so someone correct me if I am). And again, I couldn’t help but wonder if in this instance where the shooter was AA and the victims were white, she felt more comfortable immediately showing her outrage, whereas in other instances, she needed to wait a whole day, or run focus groups, polls, etc before deciding what to say and when to say it..

        • August 26, 2015 at 9:36 pm

Wow, smart observation. I think you’re right about that.

I was thinking the same thing in general terms, not just HRC. A Black killer is unusual and could cause more concern in the White population than a White killer does. There might be more outrage and ability to get gun control done.

The US has ruled out simple opium eradication programme in Afghanistan till a comprehensive plan is developed to provide an alternative source of stable income to the farmers in that country who are forced to produce it by terrorist outfits like Taliban.

“This is a tough problem to get at, but to simply, you know, work towards some eradication programme — to burn them to the ground, while that may have an immediate effect, it doesn’t necessarily do anything for long-term stability and security for Afghan farmers,” State Department spokesman, John Kirby, told reporters yesterday.

It was fine. It was the first call, and there were maybe 9 people on the call plus the state lead. It looks like they’re just getting started. We are going to be broken down into smaller regional groups and we talked about doing op-ed’s, fundraising ideas, and maybe some events around labor day. We just gave out our phone numbers and emails to the group.

The only thing she stressed it’s that they are not coordinating with Joe Biden. The other thing is that we shouldn’t attack any of the other democratic candidates, but why we think Joe Biden should be president.

Indeed sjterrid – I said the same thing on Twitter. Because I do question the source of this quote – especially seeing that it was reported 2nd-hand. We do not have an audio or video of VP Biden, and this may have been deliberately taken out of context by some HRC supporters in the DNC & media. Anyone can put quotation marks anywhere and make it seem as though he was talking about running for the Presidency.

I will support him whatever decision he makes, but I will keep my mind, eyes and ears open because I don’t trust the MSM or the DNC leadership at this point.

I will never trust Hillary and the thought of Bill back in the WH makes me ill. But if Joe decides he cannot do it, I will support her. And if Trump is the GoP nominee I most likely will actually work to get her elected. He would destroy this country. And in the end, I do not believe HRC will want to go down in history as less progressive than PBO. Not sure how much she’d get done as I don’t think she’d fare any better with the Rs. And I am slightly optimistic that after seeing how Bill’s compromises worked out in the long term she would not follow his path.

  18. 90 Vicki
    August 26, 2015 at 9:28 pm

I’ve felt sympathy for Hillary in the email brouhaha. Felt she was being unfairly targeted..

But my sympathy erodes when I hear her defensive tones. “What we did was legal. Many other people did the same thing.”
Today’s story that Caroline Kennedy had a private email, too, was the last straw.
It is not the GOP putting out the Caroline Kennedy info, right?

And the “It was legal” protestation is the same justification every financial criminal uses. The hedge funds and big banks stole this country blind by staying within the letter but not the spirit of the law. That is why PBO has been unable to prosecute them.

I’d like a candidate who has respect for something other than winning at any cost. HRC is not that candidate.

    • August 26, 2015 at 9:41 pm

Every single day there’s a story about her hideous decision to have a private server and email. I’m so sick of hearing about it and their attempts to quell the controversy are not working in the least. Tiny drip by tiny drip every single day. And if you’re a high dollar donor, you can’t be too happy about it because if she can’t manage this problem, how does that portend for her abilities going forward? The hail Mary about Caroline Kennedy, well……I can just imagine what Caroline Kennedy is thinking right about now.

      • August 27, 2015 at 12:58 am

Not surprised they used the example of someone who they resent for not supporting Hillary in 2008. It is a very well known fact that the Clintons never forget when people have been “disloyal” to them.

I hope Joe Biden runs, but my goodness he has to prepare himself for the attacks from the Clinton camp. I think they’ll be even ANGRIER at Joe Biden than they were/have been at Barack Obama for “stealing” the presidency from Hillary.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Germans to take a stand against “shameful” anti-migrant protests, on a visit to an asylum shelter which was the focus of clashes at the weekend.

Far-right protesters booed and shouted “traitor” as she arrived at the newly-opened centre in Heidenau near Dresden.

Germany has seen a sharp rise in attacks on asylum centres, as it deals with record numbers of arrivals.

He “loves” the Evangelicals, though, he says. Oh, and, he says some of these groups of people “love” him. He gives them jobs. Thousands of ’em.

I can empathize with the Bidens on the loss of their son, having lost a son 12 years ago myself. I don’t believe you ever truly get over such a tragedy, but you do learn to compartmentalize itd in order to carry on. They have many good memories that will rise to the top of their grief, which will make the loss much easier in time. I do hope he runs because it is hard for me to get behind Hillary and Bernie.
