Hamil R. Harris: White House Mentee Heads To Morehouse College

Noah McQueen used to spend more time fighting and getting arrested than getting good grades and listening to advice. He changed households and public schools 10 times before he landed at the Maryland Juvenile Justice Cheltenham Youth Center. But times have changed. “Do you need a ride back to the White House?” a presidential aide asked McQueen, 19, as he stood inside Eddie’s Hair Design in Adams Morgan on a recent day. “No, I have my own car now,” he responded. McQueen didn’t need a barber; he had a fresh haircut. He was there to work. McQueen was there with Broderick Johnson, head of the White House’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative, to be a role model to students from Marie Reed Elementary School.

The initiative was launched last year to improve educational and job opportunities for young men of color. White House officials, including President Obama, have worked hard to help McQueen. His life changed three years ago, when, as a student at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro, he began mentoring children at nearby Barack Obama Elementary. “I get choked up . . . when I think about where I was,” McQueen said as he reflected on a troubled childhood that included several suspensions, arrests and other run-ins with the law. Now McQueen is a freshman at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He graduated in May from Wise, where he finished with a 3.25 grade-point average even though his freshman and sophomore years were academic disasters.

Congratulations and good luck, Noah!

More Than 100,000 Join Democratic Party Donor Strike, Pledging to Withhold $30 Million to Democrats Who Scuttle Diplomacy with Iran

Major names—from Ben & Jerry to Democratic donor Lawrence Hess—join the strike.

More than 100,000 MoveOn members nationwide have pledged to withhold more than $30 million in donations to Democratic candidates who succeed in sabotaging diplomacy with Iran, as well as from any party committee, such as the DSCC, that supports such candidates.

AIPAC and Bibi really overplayed Israel’s hand with regards to the Iran Deal. Being surrounded by folks who are either financially or politically aligned with Israel gave them a false sense of Israel’s popularity among the American people. They thought the GOP strategy of being against anything the Black guy proposed would be enough to carry the day. What they discovered instead is the tenuous nature of the American people’s support for Israel and the fact that some Americans dislike having a Black president does not automatically make them inclined to let Israel set America’s foreign policy.

adding one last point to the ones you raised….Most Americans do not believe Congress should use our military or waste our tax dollars on Bibi’s wars.

I see CNN “News” network is still carrying the Iran inspection LIE on the tee vees around the office. They must be desperate at this point to get something, anything to stop this train. Must mean that the writing is on the wall and this deal will stand.

I swear the ‘news’ once you understand what they are up consists of mostly wishful thinking (for them and GOP) or concern trolling.

‘Last year, a young man walked into the Seattle airport and took the next flight to anywhere — and he hasn’t come down since: he boarding procedure has barely started at Chicago O’Hare, and Ben Schlappig has already taken over the first-class cabin. Inside Cathay Pacific Flight 807 bound for Hong Kong, he’s passing out a couple of hundred dollars’ worth of designer chocolates to a small swarm of giggling flight attendants. The six suites in this leather-bound playpen of faux mahogany and fresh-cut flowers comprise the inner sanctum of commercial flight that few ever witness. They’re mostly empty now, save for two men in their twenties who seem even giddier than the flight attendants. The two stand to greet him. “This is so cool!” exclaims one, and soon Schlappig is ordering champagne for everyone. This sort of thing happens to Schlappig nearly everywhere he goes. On this trip, his fans will witness Schlappig’s latest mission: a weekend jaunt that will slingshoot him across East Asia — Hong Kong, Jakarta, Tokyo — and back to New York, in 69 hours. He’ll rarely leave the airports, and when he does he’ll rest his head only in luxury hotels. With wide ears, Buddy Holly glasses and a shock of strawberry-blond hair, Schlappig resembles Ralphie from A Christmas Story if he’d grown up to become a J. Crew model. Back beyond the curtain in business class, a dozen jowly faces cast a stony gaze on the crescendos of laughter and spilled champagne — another spoiled trust-fund kid, they’ve judged, living off his parents’ largesse.

But Schlappig has a job. This is his job. Schlappig, 25, is one of the biggest stars among an elite group of obsessive flyers whose mission is to outwit the airlines. They’re self-styled competitors with a singular objective: fly for free, as much as they can, without getting caught. In the past 20 years, the Internet has drawn together this strange band of savants with an odd mix of skills: the digital talent of a code writer, a lawyer’s love affair with fine print, and a passion for airline bureaucracy. It’s a whirring hive mind of IT whizzes, stats majors, aviation nerds and everyone else you knew who skipped the prom. Schlappig owes his small slice of fame to his blog “One Mile at a Time,” a diary of a young man living the life of the world’s most implausible airline ad. Posting as often as six times a day, he metes out meticulous counsel on the art of travel hacking — known in this world as the Hobby. It’s not simply how-to tips that draw his fans, it’s the vicarious thrill of Schlappig’s nonstop-luxury life — one recent flight with a personal shower and butler service, or the time Schlappig was chauffeured across a tarmac in a Porsche. But his fans aren’t just travel readers — they’re gamers, and Schlappig is teaching them how to win….continued’

‘You’re trying to concentrate on an assignment. Your deadline’s coming up. But all day long, emails, calls, texts, reminders, push notifications and calendar alerts bombard you. What if you could turn them all off with just your brain, achieving total digital peace with zero effort? This is the idea behind Phylter, a new piece of software designed to keep you focused on the task at hand. It might be the future of working as we know it. “It’s this idea that when your mind is really busy, you can’t handle notifications very well,” Evan Peck, a former computer science Ph.D. student at Tufts University, told Mic. Peck was affiliated with the Phylter project before becoming an assistant professor at Bucknell University. “It tries to determine when you have a high workload, and then when you do, it tries not to give you notifications.”

Freedom from distraction: The concept is based on a brain-sensing technology called functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and it’s a hot topic in wearable-computing research. For instance, a 2013 Google report mentions the potential for fNIRS to be integrated into Google Glass, adapting to the user by delivering new updates and notifications to the device only at times when it wouldn’t be a distraction. “Imagine a system where you have a little dial and you can tell it, ‘Now I’m kind of busy, so leave me alone,'” Jacob told New Scientist. The research, which is being conducted under Tufts University professor Robert Jacob, would use an infrared sensor-embedded headband to measure your brain activity. If it notices you’re concentrating hard via the blood flow in your prefrontal cortex, it activates a sort of neural airplane mode, halting incoming notifications…continued’

What if one or more of those notifications is telling you that you or someone else is in danger?

Or if it’s info you urgently need to finish the deadlined task so you don’t screw it up?

Or what if the damn thing does something undesirable to your brain?

      March, 2015

Southern California apartment complexes that doubled as “maternity hotels” for Chinese women who want made-in-America babies were raided early Tuesday, capping an unprecedented federal sting operation, officials said.

NBC News was on the scene as Homeland Security agents swept into The Carlyle, a luxury property in Irvine, California, which housed pregnant women and new moms who allegedly forked over $40,000 to $80,000 to give birth in the United States.

“I am doing this for the education of the next generation,” one of the women told NBC News.

None of the women were arrested; they are being treated as material witnesses, and paramedics were on hand in case any of them went into labor during the sweep.

Instead, the investigation was aimed at ringleaders who pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars tax-free to help Chinese nationals obtain visas and then pamper them until they delivered in an American hospital at a discount, court papers show.
“It’s not necessarily illegal to come here to have the baby, but if you lie about your reasons for coming here, that’s visa fraud,” said Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations for Los Angeles.

All told, the feds raided 20 locations in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties, targeting three competing birth tourism schemes, officials said. The suspected operators have not been charged but are being questioned.

The organizers who allegedly ran the Carlyle site, Chao Chen and Dong Li, used a website to drum up business, touting the benefits of a child with U.S. citizenship: 13 years of free education, low-cost college financial aid, less pollution, and a path for the entire family to emigrate when the child becomes an adult.

Biden lovers will be interested in the lede in this Q-poll:

    Click to access ps08202015_Sdeg82k.pdf

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are clear winners in the Democratic and Republican primaries in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, but Vice President Joseph Biden runs as well as or better than Clinton against top Republicans in general election matchups in these key swing states, according to a Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released today.
While they lead in the race for the nomination, Clinton and Trump have the worst overall favorability ratings among all voters of any of the leading candidates, and the lowest scores for being honest and trustworthy, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. The Swing State Poll focuses on Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania because since 1960 no candidate has won the presidential race without taking at least two of these three states.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida both run better than Trump against Clinton, Biden or U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
If Trump makes a third-party run, results are:
Florida – Clinton at 37 percent, with 36 percent for Bush and 19 percent for Trump; Ohio – Clinton over Bush 37 – 27 percent, with 23 percent for Trump; Pennsylvania – Clinton tops Bush 37 – 29 percent, with Trump at 24 percent.
“Vice President Joseph Biden, who is spending his time in seclusion, contemplating whether to take on Secretary Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries for president, has some new information to consider,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
“In head-to-head matchups against the three leading contenders for the Republican nomination, he runs as well or slightly better than she does.”
    FLORIDA: Biden 45 – Trump 42 OHIO: Biden 48 – Trump 38 PENNSYLVANIA: Biden 48 – Trump 40
