Peter Sullivan: 16M Fewer Uninsured Since ObamaCare, Study Finds

The number of people without health insurance has declined by 15.8 million since ObamaCare’s coverage expansion took effect, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The National Health Interview Survey finds that the number of uninsured people has declined from 44.8 million in 2013, before ObamaCare’s coverage expansion took effect, to 29 million in the first quarter of 2015.  The uninsured rate fell from 14.4 percent in 2013 to 9.2 percent in 2015, according to the CDC.

The CDC report follows other studies that have found similar drops in the uninsured rate under ObamaCare. The Obama administration estimated in March that 16.4 million people had gained coverage under the law, using Gallup survey data. On Monday, Gallup released a survey showing the uninsured rate had fallen from 17.3 percent in 2013 to 11.7 percent. The survey also found that there are now seven states with uninsured rates at or below 5 percent: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Minnesota, Iowa, Connecticut and Hawaii. Before this year, only Massachusetts had a rate that low.

    GOP Fight Club!

Donald Trump mocks Rand Paul, calls on him to quit presidential race
By Jose A. DelReal and David Weigel August 12 at 7:32 PM

UPDATE: At 6:50 p.m., Donald Trump sent The Washington Post a lengthy response to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s ad. Here it is, in full.

Rand Paul is doing so poorly in the polls he has to revert to old footage of me discussing positions I no longer hold. As a world-class businessman, who built one of the great companies with some of the most iconic real estate assets in the world, it was my obligation to my family, my company, my employees and myself to maintain a strong relationship with all politicians whether Republican or Democrat. I did that and I did that well.

Unless you are a piece of unyielding granite, over the years positions evolve as they have in my case. Ronald Reagan, as an example, was a Democrat with a liberal bent who became a conservative Republican.

Recently, Rand Paul called me and asked me to play golf. I easily beat him on the golf course and will even more easily beat him now, in the world in the politics.

Senator Paul does not mention that after trouncing him in golf I made a significant donation to the eye center with which he is affiliated.

I feel sorry for the great people of Kentucky who are being used as a back up to Senator Paul’s hopeless attempt to become President of the United States— weak on the military, Israel, the Vets and many other issues. Senator Paul has no chance of wining the nomination and the people of Kentucky should not allow him the privilege of remaining their Senator. Rand should save his lobbyist’s and special interest money and just go quietly home.

Rand’s campaign is a total mess, and as a matter of fact, I didn’t know he had anybody left in his campaign to make commercials who are not currently under indictment!

Better had. He was already on my shite list. No way was I going to vote for him again. Still may not. Don’t like his treatment of PBO.

      • August 13, 2015 at 11:59 am

Is it just me or senate democrats are announcing their support in a very timed, coordinated fashion ? One or two at the time. Drip, drip, drip… So the media has to report on a “yes” vote regularly. And, of course, each senator gets his/her turn on the national media stage…

Seems to me that behind the scenes, it’s a very well known fact that the president’s veto is in no danger. I watched all of President Obama’s interviews last week and something in the way he mocked the critics and even laughed at them made me think he KNEW he had it in the bag. A sentiment I didn’t have when I watched his speech a few days prior; he wasn’t 100% sure and urged people to call their senator and their representative. He didn’t want to leave anything to chance.

Happy Birthday, Chips !!! May all your wishes come true !!!!

Christie no longer sure about birthright citizenship
    08/12/15 04:08 PM
    By Steve Benen

Republican primaries can do funny things to politicians. It wasn’t too long ago that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), for example, supported comprehensive immigration and boasted about his support from Garden State’s Latino community.

Now that the Republican governor is running for president, he opposes the bipartisan reform package – “This path to citizenship stuff is garbage,” Christie said last week – and has no qualms about pandering to the anti-immigration elements in the Republican base.

Just how far is the New Jersey Republican prepared to go down this path? ThinkProgress flagged an interesting Christie quote from this morning.
In a radio appearance on Wednesday, conservative host Laura Ingraham asked Christie for his opinion on birthright citizenship, a topic he does not seem to have specifically addressed before. In response, Christie said he believed the policy may be outdated.

“I think all this stuff needs to be reexamined in light of the current circumstances,” he said. “[Birthright citizenship] may have made sense at some point in our history, but right now, we need to re-look at all that.”
I can’t vouch for the exact wording – I didn’t hear the interview myself – but if Christie seriously believes birthright citizenship is ripe for a “reexamination,” he’s adopting a needlessly radical position, especially for someone who tried to be mainstream on the issue up until fairly recently.

Good morning TOD! Hope everyone takes a minute to read Senator Franken’s support and reasons for the Iran deal. It is one of the best I’ve seen. In particular, he notes something that has been on my mind with respect to these projections of 15 years out.

“That said, we don’t know what the world will look like in 15 years. As long as this regime holds power, Iran will represent a dangerous threat to our security. But it’s possible that, by 2031, Iran may no longer be controlled by hard-liners determined to harm our interests. More than 60% of Iran’s population is under the age of 30. These young Iranians are increasingly well-educated and pro-American.

We don’t know how this tension within Iran will work out. But we do know that backing out of a deal we’ve agreed to will only embolden the hard-liners who insist that America cannot be trusted.”

He also calls out those Rs who sent the letter during negotiations:

“In March, 47 of my Republican colleagues took the unprecedented step of sending a letter to Iran’s leaders just as these sensitive negotiations were nearing an accord. It was a clear attempt to undermine American diplomacy — and a signal that they would oppose any deal with Iran, no matter its terms.

It’s not surprising that these critics now oppose the finished deal. But it is disappointing that they refuse to acknowledge, let alone take responsibility for, the dire consequences that would almost certainly result from killing it.”

    The full article is here:

Please take a minute to read it and thank him for his support!

Hope everyone has a great day.

    • August 13, 2015 at 10:05 am

Thank you FoxfireTX, I’m going to read the rest of this and maybe Chuck Schumer should too. If Netanyahu lets him.

      • 66 FoxfireTX
        August 13, 2015 at 10:16 am

Yup. But I do get the feeling the tide slowly is turning on this notwithstanding the millions poured in by AIPAC to oppose it. I was concerned the Schumer defection would lead to others, but hasn’t happened yet. And there is another good article on Politico–again of all places–by former Senators Levin and Warner supporting the deal. Still keeping my fingers crossed for not just a veto proof majority but enough votes in the Senate to prevent cloture on the Rs bill to disapprove. The House veto proofing also seems to be holding, none of the 151 reps that sent the letter to PBO supporting the deal have defected, and the House will vote to override the veto before the Senate. Boehner needs to take some lessons from Pelosi:-) So if it dies there will never get to the Senate.

    • August 13, 2015 at 12:06 pm

he has a gift with communication, no doubt. Still I remember him sounding a bit wishy washy on this at first, so I sent him a letter strongly encouraging him to support this deal. Very glad franken came around with his support. He makes excellent points, almost as if he’s been reading TOD!

When Nancy Pelosi said she had the votes to sustain PBO’s veto this is what she meant:

Nancy has a signed pledge from 151 House Democrats who are in favor of The Iran Nuclear Deal. 151.
Only 144 are needed to sustain the veto.
So our very competent Leader has a comfy margin of 7 more votes than are needed.
    No worries about The House.
Which is why it has gotten no media attention.

The Senate, on the other hand, needs 34 votes to sustain PBO’s veto.
At last count there are fewer than 20 CONFIRMED Yes votes.
Although there is confidence of 29 Yesses, for sure.

6 Undecided or the 5 we have no info either way votes have to join the 29 for a Senate veto sustaining. Also from the probably list. Plenty ways to get to our number.

I may be wrong on this but I think only one body—Senate or House—needs to sustain PBO’s veto and the Republicans+ Schumer’s squawking will be irrelevant. If this is correct the No side is already doomed.

On Friday night I will provide the names of the Senate (D) who are in the undecided or no info categories. Hopefully, by then, more of them will be in the Yes category.

    • August 13, 2015 at 11:38 am

You’re right. Only needs one body of Congress and the veto override is dead.

      • August 13, 2015 at 11:51 am

Exactly Bill and just to set the context for Vicki – Senate votes first, then House.

If it passes both (likely unless enough Senators block cloture) it goes to the President.

When PBO vetoes it returns to the House. If House doesn’t override the veto (likely because of Leader Pelosi’s skill) it’s dead.

Should the veto be over ridden in the House it goes to the Senate. I think it highly unlikely it ever makes it back to the Senate for an over ride vote.

Our mission, should we chose it, is to work our butts off from now until the day in Sept when the Senate votes to convince enough Senators to block cloture.

        • August 13, 2015 at 11:54 am

BTW, foreign policy legislation must arise from the Senate. The House can vote on all the FP resolutions it wants, but they are non-binding, i.e., they are not law. Thus, the reason this particular bill must begin in the Senate.

    • August 13, 2015 at 12:18 pm

Well, so does this mean Senators won’t even have to vote ?

Which would mean that there is room for the cowards in the senate democratic caucus to either say “no”, or say nothing…

Black Lives Matter is, in a sense, Trayvon Martin’s legacy. The hashtag first began appearing when George Zimmerman, the neighborhood-watch volunteer who fatally shot the 17-year-old as he walked home in a small Florida town, was acquitted in July 2013. While Zimmerman walked free, Trayvon’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, found themselves at the forefront of an urgent new national movement that has only been fueled by a series of other shootings of black youth by the hands of police, as well as several deaths while in police custody. Fulton, at first unwilling to be a spokesperson, has since grown into her role, traveling around the country to speak about racial violence on behalf of the Trayvon Martin Foundation, and connecting with the “Circle of Mothers,” women who have lost children to gun violence. This week, one year after Michael Brown’s death and more than three after Trayvon’s, Fulton spoke with us about healing, justice for her son, and why, for her, there is no moving on.

Since Trayvon’s death, we’ve seen story after story about the murder of young black men and women. What is that like for you?
It hurts every time I see another tragedy in the news. I feel for those families, I can understand that mother’s cry, and that father’s yelling. I can understand those things because I’ve been through it, and I’m still going through it years later. The pain is so fresh, it’s like it never goes away. It’s better at some times, but it never goes away.

With the Foundation we reach out to the families but I don’t like to get involved prior to the funeral. I usually wait until after they have buried their loved ones. Then either Tracy or I, or sometimes both of us, will fly to that city and just show that family support and love. In the past year I’ve met with the families of some of the high-profile victims like Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo, and Ramarley Graham in New York; Hadiya Pendleton in Chicago; Oscar Grant in Oakland; Michael Brown in Ferguson; Tamir Rice in Cleveland; Jordan Davis in Florida — the list goes on. Last week, I met with Sandra Bland’s mother and sister. It’s just unfortunate, the shoes they have to walk in and the journey they have to take.

Echoes what many of us have been stating at TOD since the emergence of the ‘tea party’ …

“I have thought since the Tea Party’s appearance on the political scene half a dozen years ago that the American right was destined to destroy itself before our eyes. Last week’s G.O.P. display—it was politics as spectacle, not a debate—convinces me of this. The Republican Party as it has been in history is already gone, more or less, and is being replaced—more swiftly than one would have thought possible—with what amounts to a fanatical fringe.

Good enough that the Republicans tip into unreason, you might think. But who could have guessed that irrationality was a winning political platform? Who would have imagined even a few years ago that the Rockefeller wing of the party was so spineless and desperate to win Washington that it would capitulate to extremists thoroughly incompetent to address the 21st century’s self-evident realities?

The question to come is whether the American electorate will commission those who have usurped the G.O.P. to destroy a lot more than the party. Put any one of these people in office and Americans will forfeit their chance to participate constructively in a self-evidently emergent world order, to escape a past that now haunts us, to act abroad out of something other than fear.”
