Helloooooooo!

Danny making friends on his country holly-day

****

HelloooOOOoooOOOooo TOD!

A trazillion thanks for the birthday good wishes – I canNOT believe I am 23! πŸ™„

A trazillion gazillion thanks to Nerdy for splendiferously running TOD the last couple of weeks – and most probably having no sleep or fresh air since I set sail for the beach. She’s several billion bunches of awesome, eternally and massively grateful.

Aaaaand – huuuuge thanks to LL, Zizi and even Amk for helping out in a highly stupendous fashion, I owe you all one of my cheesy puff and peanut butter cakes.

****

Fortunately, Mr Jelly was deceased (RIP) πŸ˜•

Just sayin’:

😎

****

I’m hopelessly out of touch with all the news (I will share my dongle-thingie traumas one day, but I’m not ready to go there just yet, it’s way too painful), so will go through all the posts to catch up so I don’t ask questions like ‘who is this Obama chap that you speak of?’.

Will be back to semi-normal-ish next week, and fully normal-ish the week after.

All of which means: Nerdy will finally get some sleep.

Hope you’re all doing great, love and huuuuuuugs!

You know, that with each day, I have been thinking that the gop and shumer-like cowards will soon be hoping for Dems to block the vote (invoke cloture).

that way they would be spared from taking a hard and for some career-limiting vote.

the same way they demanded a vote on Syria, ISIL and then chickened out once PBO granted their wish

        To quote amk – egg.zack.lee – Linda!!!

I’m not sure it will even require them to get to the 41 to block cloture, I suspect as Bob notes that as soon as we get to the 34 so the veto will be sustained they will start working to avoid any vote. That way, they can continue to criticize or not but take credit for however this works out without ever having to go on the record with a vote. Our lovely senators are nothing but a bunch of chickenshits when push comes to shove.

OMG….my hope is that they there are enough supporters…that there will not be a vote…

    • 36 globalcitizenlinda
      August 13, 2015 at 9:54 pm

remember how they previously demanded votes on ISIL and Syria and then never took any – that way they can continue criticizing PBO choice without putting any skin-in-the-game.

      scumbags and cowards – very good at verbal garbage but can’t buck their crap up with a vote;

      okay, end of rant

      • August 14, 2015 at 11:20 am

Your ranting here is righteous and right on time and on the money. Bloviating puffed-up ruffly-feathered pompous and hypocritical chickens, strutting around on the stage till they have to stand on their words, and then huffling and puffling back into the roost rather than back up their bluffing blather. Thankful that our mighty C in C sees them, bests them, and strides right on past their henhouse doing what is right and good for the whole wide world. Thankful as Bobfr always says that the answer is #TrustBarack.

    • August 13, 2015 at 10:33 pm

pf58 & Linda …. the moment GOP & chickenhawk DEMS like Schumer & others realize that not enough votes exist to override a veto you are going to witness all kinds of maneuvering to get out of actually having to vote on the current GOP anti-IranDeal legislation.

As noted above, preventing cloture not only kills that GOP bill in the Senate, it means the House has no legislation on which to vote – and youbetcha a bunch of House GOP and DEMS will be delighted by that fact, none least of which will be Boehner and Hoyer.

      • August 13, 2015 at 10:35 pm

Also, if you read Treasury Sec Lew’s OP-ED in today’s NYT – posted below, you’ll get a sense of just how many US business and banking leaders are not going to be the least bit happy if the Iran Deal implodes because of the US.

  10. August 13, 2015 at 9:52 pm

    A MUST read:

The High Price of Rejecting the Iran Deal
By (Treasury Secretary) JACOB J. LEWAUG. 13, 2015

“WASHINGTON β€” THE Iran nuclear deal offers a long-term solution to one of the most urgent threats of our time. Without this deal, Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, would be less than 90 days away from having enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb. This deal greatly reduces the threat of Iran’s nuclear program, making Iran’s breakout time four times as long, securing unprecedented access to ensure that we will know if Iran cheats and giving us the leverage to hold it to its commitments.

Those calling on Congress to scrap the deal argue that the United States could have gotten a better deal, and still could, if we unilaterally ramped up existing sanctions, enough to force Iran to dismantle its entire nuclear program or even alter the character of its regime wholesale. This assumption is a dangerous fantasy, flying in the face of economic and diplomatic reality.

    clip

We must remember recent history. In 1996, in the absence of any other international support for imposing sanctions on Iran, Congress tried to force the hands of foreign companies, creating secondary sanctions that threatened to penalize them for investing in Iran’s energy sector. The idea was to force international oil companies to choose between doing business with Iran or the United States, with the expectation that all would choose us.

This outraged our foreign partners, particularly the European Union, which threatened retaliatory action and referral to the World Trade Organization and passed its own law prohibiting companies from complying. The largest oil companies of Europe and Asia stayed in Iran until, more than a decade later, we built a global consensus around the threat posed by Iran and put forward a realistic diplomatic means of addressing it.”

Hooooooooooopefruit!! The post is only 10ish minutes old and already it needs updating – Danny has left Penny the Lab for Lucky the Collie. πŸ™„ He even lets her have his tennis ball. It’s *that* serious.

        • August 13, 2015 at 10:27 pm

To be honest Hopefruit, I don’t think Penny was entirely committed to the relationship, she was a bit flighty (eg she had eyes for Sam the Lab who Danny dislikes because he stole his new giraffe cuddly toy). Just hoping things work out with Lucky – who is very inappropriately named, having been attacked by a badger a few weeks ago.

Hey Prettyfoot did you watch Rachel tonight? She did an archival background show on all of the Democratic candidates, and devoted more
time to Bernie Sanders than any other candidate.

      • 84 idon
        August 13, 2015 at 10:46 pm

I watched it COS and it looked to me like she threw HRC under the bus. Rachel called her stubborn re: the speaking at Women’s Conf in Bejiing and the “failed” healthcare initiative. Then she showed footage from 2008 primary showing PBO and HRC trading barbs. She mentioned the Clinton impeachment and then mentioned HRC’s role as prosecuting attoryney in Watergate hearings (Nixon). Bernie was Rachel described Bernie’s message consistent and unwavering over his entire political life. In the 1980s Bernie described our two party system as corrupt but Rachel doesn’t offer any explanation as to why Bernie decided to run as a Democrat. That information was provided during the Last Word. Bernie said he chose to run as a Democrat because he needs their primary and caucus process to win. So you have to ask yourself, if Bernie is going to tell his supporters that this will be one of many compromises he will have to make to stay in the race. I think compromise and choice is always necessary but I don’t think Bernie’s supporters really understand that.

        • 85 vcprezofan2
          August 13, 2015 at 11:13 pm

Inquiring mind and all that….. My questions:

          i) Has Rachel done archival backgrounds on the GOP candidates?

ii) Why does media insist on tainting HRC with the ‘Clinton impeacment’? I’m no fan of hers but *she* wasn’t impeached.

iii) Was Rachel’s presentation of O’Malley fair?

          • 86 idon
            August 14, 2015 at 12:01 am

Rachel is doing a tape on GOP candidates too. I’m not a an HRC fan either but I think it’s done to keep the untrustworthy meme going. I thought the O’Malley segment focused on his youth and peronality but not on his policies as she did with Bernie. I think that was the difference between her coverage of Bernie and all the other candidates. What I came away with is that all of the Dem candidates were really good options compared to the GOP field.

            • 87 vcprezofan2
              August 14, 2015 at 10:02 am

πŸ˜€ Good final take -> ‘all of the Dem candidates were really good options compared to the GOP field’.

what will Bibi do when he loose this fight with PBO – Re: #IranDeal??

during the past days, my friends have been discussing how Bibi relates to our country of birth. We understand that Bibi’s brother was the soldier who led the rescue of Israeli hostages that is depicted in the movie : “Ninety (90) Minutes in Entebbe”.

    unfortunately, this soldier was killed during the raid in Entebbe;

So, during Bibi’s first term as PM, he demanded that Uganda turn this airport, where his brother died, to the Israeli government and also name it after the deceased.

just for context, Entebbe Airport was then (and still is) the only national airport which receives almost all the international flights into the country.

the request to turn over Entebbe to Israel was denied.

Ugandan people reminded the world that the person who authorized the hostages to land in Entebbe was dictator Idi Amin who is responsible for killing thousands of Ugandans from all walks of life.

    • 98 globalcitizenlinda
      August 13, 2015 at 10:37 pm

one of the many killed by Amin, was a dear friend of my father, and friend of my elementary school best friend. He was killed in the middle of the capital city, in broad day light, by firing squad.

      I remember the trauma his children experienced due to this event;

my father locked himself in his bedroom and cried for many, many weeks when his friend was executed

Oh, seems to me that they’ve been showcasing VPJoe for *months* now, both here and around the world! To me he has seemed far more visible doing ‘presidential’ stuff in the past year or so than ever before. I also add to this increased visibility the overseas visits that Dr. Jill has done on her own.

I have noticed Joe being prominently featured in the background closest to the Prez at speeches and signings for months now too. I also do not remember Second Lady foreign trips highlighted in the press before. PBO may not openly support VPJB for Prez, but bet everything possible will be done to help him behind the scenes.

Some pretty disgusting responses to Leader Pelosi’s tweet above. Good to see some other folks get it.

Robert Rotz, I’m glad to see you think starting another war is the answer, it’s clear people like you haven’t learn a dam thing from that disaster in Iraq. Maybe you think it was a success, so this time you war lovers want to start a war with Iran.

Happy Birthday, Chips! The picture of Danny in the water with tennis ball in mouth and freeze frame of water drops should be an iPhone6 billboard it is so good. We missed your cheer but Nerdy and her helpers have done an incredible job in keeping TOD in business. We are all behind our President 150 percent and working for peace, not another ME war.

Very in-depth article on reforming a major problem with our prison system. Bail has been abused and ruining peoples lives.

Jeff Flake Is going. I thought he might.
NY Times wanted to ignore this tremendous success of PBO’s but settled for a snide article from POS Peter Baker on how the Cuba deal almost didn’t happen.

If POTUS did it we ignore it. Rock hard policy of the US Media.

Welcome back Ms. Chips. Home is just not home without you. But I must say Nerdy was wonderful as usual. LL, Zizi gave us a lot to think about and enjoy and Amk – well Amk is Amk and he’s great. Everyone who contributed was amazing. I hope you and Danny enjoyed your vacation. You certainly deserved it. Thank you again for giving us this “home” where we can laugh, cry, get angry and love!

    rotten, evil azz muthaphucka.

    ………………………

    Chicago, New Orleans, and rebirth

Envy isn’t a rational response to the upcoming 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina..

But with Aug. 29 fast approaching and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu making media rounds, including at the Tribune Editorial Board, I find myself wishing for a storm in Chicago β€” an unpredictable, haughty, devastating swirl of fury. A dramatic levee break. Geysers bursting through manhole covers. A sleeping city, forced onto the rooftops.

That’s what it took to hit the reset button in New Orleans. Chaos. Tragedy. Heartbreak

Residents overthrew a corrupt government. A new mayor slashed the city budget, forced unpaid furloughs, cut positions, detonated labor contracts. New Orleans’ City Hall got leaner and more efficient. Dilapidated buildings were torn down. Public housing got rebuilt. Governments were consolidated.

An underperforming public school system saw a complete makeover. A new schools chief, Paul Vallas, designed a school system with the flexibility of an entrepreneur. No restrictive mandates from the city or the state. No demands from teacher unions to abide. Instead, he created the nation’s first free-market education system.

Hurricane Katrina gave a great American city a rebirth.

And after careful study of the levees, it turns out the devastation was not born of natural disaster. It was man-made.
