Jamie Utt: Interrupting Bernie: Exposing The White Supremacy Of The American Left

Because here’s the thing – what’s powerful about these interruptions from Black women is less how it has changed the tone of the Democratic campaigns and more about what they have exposed in the White left. I see these protests as less about the individual candidates themselves and more about how their White base refuses to center Black lives and Black issues. It’s notable that White Bernie supporters, who consider themselves the most progressive of us all, shouted down and booed Black women who dared to force Blackness into the center of White space. Because let’s be honest, every Bernie rally is White space.

What was true in King’s time is true in ours: the greatest stumbling block to racial justice is not the KKK; it’s well-meaning White people who would rather maintain injustice than risk the decentering of our Whiteness and White comfort. And when I watch and hear the reaction of a mostly White Seattle crowd to a Black woman naming that the event is taking place in the context of Indigenous genocide, the new Jim Crow, and the everyday violence that Black, Brown, and Indigenous people face in Seattle, I’m ashamed. Two Black women called for a moment of silence for Mike Brown a year after he was gunned down, left bleeding in the street for 4.5 hours, and White “progressives” shouted, booed, and chanted the name of a White man throughout that moment.

Good morning, TOD. I’ll be off shortly for my Tuesday Manna House service. Have already prayed for each person who walks through our doors this morning.

May all of you be blessed today and have your most urgent need met. God bless our President and his family and may they use this time to relax, rest and recharge.

      Congrats Mariele 🙂

Thank you NW for highlighting the obvious display of #WhitePrivilege instead of what could have been a truly profound ‘teachable moment’ had Senator Sanders had the moral and intellectual capacity to mentor it.

Yes, and we all should. He’s a disgrace and should not be leading Democrats in the Senate.

Agree 100% Anniebella and Jacqueline! Write, call, email, tweet to your Senators and Rep about this. Schumer’s treachery will not stand. The only “conscience vote” to take on this Iran Deal is to support it and stay away from another useless, costly war,

Barack Obama will always be our image of what a real president and leader looks like. Others will be elected to that office, but they will all pale in comparison and we will look at them and sigh in remembrance. When my little granddaughter is older, I hope to sit with her and tell her all about the great man who was president when she was born and how his beautiful First Lady was giving a glorious speech just as our little one decided to enter this world. I will tell her that if she wants to grow up to be the best person she can, she should read about President Obama and his remarkable wife, listen to their speeches and try to be as much like them as she can while being true to herself. I firmly believe that generation after generation of young people will look to the story of Barack Obama to draw inspiration and will learn to replace prejudice and hatred with love and understanding. In that way, the influence of our great president will grow through the ages. And those of us who lived through his presidency and savored every moment will be called the lucky ones.

always thought time travel was interesting, as a theory. in actuality, there aren’t many times my Black self would want to ‘go back to’. When, exactly, would be a ‘good time’……

    ………………

Watch First Trailers for New Time Travel Web Series About Black People Sent Back to Slavery Days (Would You Go Back?)

    Shadow and Act
By Sergio | Shadow and Act

    August 10, 2015 at 8:15PM

Well, as I said last fall when “Send Me” was announced during its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign: who in their right mind would want to do that (go back in time to the days of slavery)?

Personally, I say NO WAY. That is, of course, unless I could be like Django and take out a whole bunch of white Southern slave owners (or just like Ken Norton in “Mandingo” with Susan George. Just kidding…Maybe…)

Created by playwright, screenwriter and actor Steve Harper, and starring Tracie Thoms, Gabrielle Carteris, Nelsan Ellis, Jerrika Hinton, Jasika Nicole, and Carlease Burke, and shot earlier this year in and around Los Angeles, “Send Me” follows a black woman (Thoms) who has the power to send black people back in time, to the slavery era.

But Harper points out that the people who do this in the series are doing it of their own free will: “It’s not a punishment. They want to go – to explore their blackness, their history, to connect to who they are. It takes place now… and it involves time travel. Candidates apply for the chance to take the trip. Those who want to go are trying to find out who they are now, based on who their ancestors were.”

WTF????? Who in the hell would voluntarily go back to “slavery days” when we are all “work slaves” NOW. AA’s have not had a “easy” time just because the changes in 1965 and forward especially since the RW and all Democrats have been slowly eroding those laws that should have made it easier on AA’s to vote, attain higher education, job opportunities, etc. What, things are soooooo good for AA’s lets go back in time to when we were brought here in chains, whipped, families sold off, starved, hanged, and killed for any reason….a lot like 2015.

    • 58 pkayden
      August 11, 2015 at 11:27 am

How insulting that Black history is reduced to slavery as if we had no history beyond and before being enslaved in the New World. What about time traveling to great African kingdoms which existed in Western Africa prior to the age era? I love Thoms and she’s a great actress but this show sounds awful.

Good morning Nerdy, Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family, I hope all is well with everyone this lovely Tuesday morning. Congrats mrm, on being first this morning.

  14. August 11, 2015 at 9:18 am

    Good morning TOD,
    Congrats Marielle!

Jackie, your words eloquently speak what my heart feels.
To wake up early in the morning with such encouraging and inspirational words of wisdom and thoughts of kindness for your granddaughter makes me grateful and blessed to have experienced this wonderful legacy.
I am savoring each day to come with great expectations in the midst of all the turmoil that is still and will continue to go on in the world that hope and change is possible if you only believe it, desire it, work hard for it and STAY FOCUSED.

Our President and First Lady have done more than set the bar and set examples……they together as one made it happen!
And need I say, they included us all.
For that I am grateful and will share that along with what you said with my grandchildren as well.
Thank you for the sunshine on this beautiful cloudy day.
    PEACE.

Glad to see Sen Klobuchar come around for support of the ‘imperfect’ iran deal. Always has to be a tweak eh? well i’ll let that just slide this time as her support for the deal is worth more than the language she uses. I had sent her a note reminding her that she is up for re-election again while the president is not. 🙂

He has a series of 20 tweets – a few are in the sidebar. I urge you to go to President Ghani’s Twitter homepage – https://twitter.com/ashrafghani – and read all of them. He’s bringing it to the Pakistan leadership. It has been obvious for years, and now could not be starker, that the vestiges of Taliban fanatics are still well protected by the Pakistan government.

Recently, I’ve seen one or two new “polling ads” pop up on my internet screen asking me whether I would support a third term for President Obama. PBO is not running for a third term, so why are they so concerned about whether or not people support a 3rd term for PBO?!?!?

Were there any polling ads asking folk whether they supported a third term for GWB? I think NOT…

The folks running the plantation, I mean city of Ferguson seem to be trying to create a race war. They murder unarmed Black people, but allow white civilians to walk around with semi-automatic rifles (let that reality sink in). The Justice Department report told of a system which fines and arrests Black people for no justifiable cause and uses the money generated to finance the oppression of the Black population. If the Tea Party and Libertarian followers were not white supremacists this would be right in their wheel house, but since Black folks are the target of the oppression, it is alright with them. Race changes/effects everything in this country, and unfortunately, too many of the people who benefit from the racist status quo resist change. Hell, they resist being informed of the situation. This is why they hate the Black Lives Matter movement, whose sole purpose is peacefully raising the awareness of “nonracist” white people to the costs and consequences of white racism in policing. This antagonism far predates the interruptions at the Sanders/Social Security rally. I think a lot of these folks know that Black people are treated harshly by the police and don’t care. They view life as a zero sum game and as such any gain by Black people will result in a “loss” by whites. They feign ignorance or skepticism so their “innocence” or “purity” is maintained.
