BBC: UN To Examine Syria Chemical Weapons Attacks

The UN has adopted a resolution aimed at identifying those behind chemical weapons attacks in Syria. UN chief Ban Ki-moon and the head of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will be asked to prepare a plan for an inquiry. The vote came after the US and Russia agreed on the final text of the resolution. A mission to eliminate Syria’s chemical arsenal was set up after a deadly attack outside Damascus in August 2013.

Late last year, the OPCW declared it had removed or destroyed all 1,180 tonnes of declared toxic agents and precursor chemicals. After Friday’s vote, the US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, said it was a clear message that the perpetrators would not go unpunished. “Today’s resolution has been adopted with the council’s unanimous support,” she said. “This sends a clear and powerful message to all those involved in chemical weapons attacks in Syria. The joint investigative mechanism will identify you if you gas people.

Morning, Nerdy. The thing that gets me the most is that Republican women swallow all this and vote for misogynist candidates just because they have an R after their name. The most hideous and obnoxious comments in the world don’t deter them. And some of these nuts are even in my family. The kind of verbal gymnastics I have to perform to talk to some family members is pitiable. Veer into politics–even tangentially–and I start World War III. It’s truly exhausting. Yet they love me and I love them. Go figure.

I could give two shyts about what Trump said about Meghan Kelly. She has sat up there, without fail, while countless other females, including the First Lady and her daughters, have been insulted, and she hasn’t said shyt.

So, no…I don’t give a phuck what Trump said about her.

        August 8, 2015 at 10:21 am

Don’t forget her comment about the McKinney teen who was pinned down by the cop while she was wearing a bikini. Meghan said “she’s no saint”
So they can all spare me the outrage.

        • August 8, 2015 at 11:26 am

I guess it’s only when they offend one of their owns, these are the same people who found not fault with Donald Trump saying that President Obama was not born in this country. And no I am no fan of meghan kelly either.

Good morning, nerdy. Thank you for your tireless efforts in bringing us this forum of truth.
    Good morning TOD.

I don’t know if anybody will find this interesting, but the WaPo site that promised us a continually updated count on the Iran Deal has not been doing so.
Last entry was yesterday at 10:00 AM.

So far I think the confirmed Yes votes stand at 16.
Chuck Schumer reportedly called Bernie Sanders to ask him to reverse his Yes vote. Outrageous, if accurate.

Does Chuck think that Bernie’s early out front “Yes” puts HRC at a disadvantage?

    Just read of the death of the Palestine, father of the baby/toddler, who was burnt and died in the housefire, set by the extremist settlers;

politicians never learn that if you manipulate hate/extremism to win elections, these emboldened people will eventually demand that you live up to the campaign promises you made.

in the end you, as the politician, who rode the political wave of hate, will not be able to control the words and actions of these extremists

    • August 8, 2015 at 10:27 am

in the end you, as the politician, who rode the political wave of hate, will not be able to control the words and actions of these extremists

      **************************

      Hi Linda….never a truer statement…
same is true in this country…
when a young man listens to or is fed a steady diet of hate and more hate…and then acts out that hate as …everyone is shocked…the hatemongers and fearmongers are not held accountable for their incitement…

and if the perpetrator does not have an Arabic name it is not considered terrorism….

but what can be more terrorist then inciting violence and hatred against a group of people…

ask any black man or women stopped by the police…

Racism and Racist threats are tolerated and encouraged in this society…it is part of the fabric of Americanism…i am not sure if we will ever be able to rip it out….

Donald Trump says what need to be said, he speaks his mind. He’s kind of Reagen-ness. That’s what some supporter of his said. A rich racists, sexists, loud mouth bully, yes he represent the Tea Party Racists Republicans just find. I guess the moderators weren’t suppose to ask Trump tough questions, that is what piss the disgusting bully off this time..

Now let me say afew words about that Chuck Schumer. Calling Bernie Sanders, who else have he call to try to convince them? And this is who Harry Reid think deserve to be the leader of the Senate Democrats, oh no,no,no. I don’t think he deserve to be in the Senate.

    GITMO alert:

The United States has secured commitments from a dozen countries to accept nearly half of the 52 Guantanamo prisoners already cleared for transfer, U.S. officials said on Friday, as the Obama administration tries to accelerate efforts to close the military prison.

But the moves will require the final signature of Defense Secretary Ash Carter, which could still delay the process, despite President Barack Obama’s push to empty the prison before he leaves office in 2017.

With the White House drafting a broader plan to shut the facility, the office of the State Department’s Guantanamo envoy has finalized deals with several foreign governments and is in advanced negotiations with others, the senior officials told Reuters.

They said the transfers from the prison at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which has drawn international condemnation for the harsh treatment of foreign terrorism suspects held there, could take place by the end of the year, whittling down the current prisoner population of 116.

    • August 8, 2015 at 10:44 am

      Current tally:

Total number of Guantanamo detainees= 116
Number of detainees now cleared for release=51
Number of detainees either “forever ” prisoners or not yet decided=65

      Thanks for this update Meta, I am one of those who are closely watching the progress on this matter;

I think that PBO is going to do all he can to make sure that GITMO is closed before he leaves office.

I am praying for PBO to succeed in closing this symbol of a Shrub US federal government going against its own constitution and the bedrock of its own values of what a fair justice system ought to be.

Russia’s defence firms have been hit not only by Western sanctions but also by a breakdown in business ties with Ukraine.

For decades under Soviet rule, Russia’s strategic industries had close links with partners in Ukraine, all centrally controlled from Moscow.

But relations soured last year, with Ukraine’s pivot to the West, Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine.

The EU and US banned military exports to Russia, saying Moscow was supplying the insurgents with sophisticated heavy weapons and regular troops. Moscow denied the allegations.
