The incredible cowardice of Senator Chuck Schumer

Chuck Schumer, senior Senator from New York, last night came out in opposition to the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by the five permanent Security Council members and the EU, a deal which takes an Iranian nuclear weapon off the table.

The fact that he released his statement when followers of politics had their eyes fixed on the GOP beauty pageant is telling. It was the equivalent of a Friday afternoon news dump.

Of course, he wasn’t counting that those of us who are Obama supporters and supporters of peace can do more than one thing at a time. The reaction was instant and furious. I’ve tried calling Sen. Schumer’s office, and no one is answering the phone.

His Medium piece is one roiling paranoid fantasy that Iranians can never be trusted, ever, on a par with Binyamin Netanyahu’s belief that Iran wants to conquer the world.

Nowhere in his piece does he address the fact that if the US rejects the deal, the other signatories are not bound by that rejection. They are tired of the sanctions regime, and will no longer be able to trust the US on negotiating any accord. Certainly Russia and China will lift their sanctions. And France, Britain, and the EU are not likely to fall back in line when there’s already a breach in the sanctions regime, absolutely fed up by US fecklessness.

What Senator Schumer is advocating is a dereliction of US leadership. Approving a deal maintains a coalition built painstakingly by Pres. Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and current SoS John Kerry. Rejecting the deal does not enhance the US’s position in the world, but tarnishes it as much as anything done during the Bush Administration. It is strategic and political malfeasance.

It is also telling that Mr. Schumer spends half of his statement on the non-nuclear aspects of relations with Iran. There he paints Iran as a member of that putative Axis of Evil, on a par with Nazi Germany, unwilling to change, always seeking to dominate the Middle East and the world. His “better deal” would have addressed the totality of the Iranian political system, not just its nuclear program. How he thinks the Powers could have gotten Iran to the table if the ultimate object was complete capitulation he doesn’t adumbrate. Merely the fact that the deal didn’t include curbs on Iran’s strategic interests is sufficient to scupper it.

What the putative future Democratic Senate leader did last night was to call for war. This is not scare mongering. US strategic interests cannot allow a nuclear-armed Iran. Absent this deal, Iran will be able to, if it wishes, manufacture nuclear weapons. To prevent this, the US will have to launch a costly, catastrophic war, with no support from any of its allies. It is, quite simply, a recipe for the destruction of American leadership. It would also destroy the world economy. Such a man is not fit to have any position of leadership in the Democratic Party.

Mr. Schumer said a few days ago that he would not be swayed by party in his deliberations over the Iran deal. He obviously was also not swayed by logic, empathy, or plain common sense. If the President’s veto is overturned, the pursuant deaths will be on his head.

I called and the young lady was very pleasant and said that she would let him know my message. She also asked where I was calling from and I said Los Angeles, CA.

So people – make the call. Be polite, but ask her to pass on to Sen Reid our displeasure with Sen Schumer and that we don’t want him as our Senate Leader if he can’t support President Obama.

Our calls are being noted by her.

        YES. WE. CAN!

Yep, Sen Schumer is 1001%, cowardly.
His gimmick, sneaky cowardly act didn’t fool anyone.
He has been in Congress for decades. It’s about time that Citizens of NY say, ENOUGH and elect someone else who isn’t a tool of Netanyahu.

I am bringing this back from the last post, pardon me.
    Beautiful post, LL. Thank you.

    BRAVO @Reince

    • August 7, 2015 at 2:00 pm

Mr. Bobfr, when the GOP is tired of him they will unleash and drop the “tell all damaging bombs” they are holding as their trump cards.
They will regroup while on vacation with more evil deeds. That’s who they are and all that they know.
I am so glad POB does not have to be subjected to these fools games. These battles are not his.
The GOP will devourer themselves right in front of their own eyes.
All we have to do is just wait, be patient, push back when absolutely necessary.
Anticipating and expecting the ultimate “chess move” from POB after his deserved vacation with his family.
4th quarter is upon us. I am ready!

The treatment of this poor dog made me sad but thank God for the young man who rescued him from 10 yr hell. This Dog was in Phoenix AZ where the temps gets above 100 degrees several months out of the year. I was at the vet where a kitten was near death, found in a pile of wood barely clinging to life. What is wrong with people in this country? I could no more allow an animal to starve or go without human touch. Even the strays I feed who hiss at me know if not for me and others who make sure they have food, water, and kind words or pet them if they let me, know they are cared for. Jeff – don’t be ashamed to cry…it shows we are human.

The math on the Senate count according to Greg Sargent:

“Here’s the Senate math as of today. Earlier this week, proponents got a big boost when Senators Tim Kaine, Angus King, and Kirsten Gillibrand came out for the deal. Right now I count 14 Senators as genuinely possible votes against it: Heitkamp, Blumenthal, Donnelly, Bennet, Menendez, Reid, Coons, Cardin, Manchin, Booker, Carper, Peters, Casey, and Wyden.

Opponents need 13 Dems to side with them to override the veto. With Schumer, they now need 12. That means opponents need 12 of the 14 remaining Dems to side with them. Carper is now leaning towards the deal. So is Joe Manchin. So that’s a tall order.”

    • August 7, 2015 at 1:33 pm

I look at this list here and I have to ask, is Cory Booker insane? WTF has happened to him? Likewise for my own senator, Ron Wyden. (I’ve made calls to local and DC offices on Wyden. ) People from CT need to be working on Blumenthal, people from MD here I know are working on Cardin, people from PA on Casey and so on.

      • August 7, 2015 at 1:45 pm

Bill, Corey Booker is a tool for Chris Christie.
My family in N.J. says they have never trusted him. He is a fake and phony.
He creates these photo-ops to be at the right place at the right time.
His motives is not a surprise to me. It’s just pathetic.

  21. August 7, 2015 at 1:36 pm

Makes me wonder how hard did George W. Bush had to work to convince those Democrats to vote along with him to invade Iraq? Chuck Schumer didn’t think long and hard about it. And that’s because Netanyhau was in favor of the invasion.

    • August 7, 2015 at 1:39 pm

      Hi Bella,
Spot on! I believe his whole agenda was to get in Congress to aid Bibi.

    • 42 Nena20409

It was quite Simple…….the devastating Terrorist attacks on 9-11 made the invasion of Iraq possible. The complicity by the News Media, the Machinery of the GOP Media bombardment, the Jingoism of Patriotism and the Waving of the Flag with Loud Screams of shouting down folks who were opposed to the Iraq war.

    • 43 EricFive
      August 7, 2015 at 2:11 pm

Dems were especially cowardly after 9/11. The media portrayed any opposition to GWB as treasonous and Dems fell in line. I think only Barbara Lee from California voted against going to war with Iraq. She was the only person not cowed by the GOP/MSM.

I am not in the least surprised by Schumer’s opposition to the Iran deal, it was always clear where his loyalty lies. I was bothered by the timing of Reid appointing Schumer as his successor (it happened during the initial Iran deal debate/47 traitors letter). The GOP showed itself to be firmly in Israel’s pocket and by appointing Schumer, Harry Reid signaled that Dem leadership would remain in Israel’s pocket too. I, like many Americans, do not like the amount of control Israel has over our politicians. I believe AIPAC and the Congress people it owns are overplaying their hand, and will face a backlash. Most Americans do not share this fealty to Israel and it is time our elected leaders reflected the views of Americans, not Israel.

    Well – alrighty now

Would that it were creating its very own food

North Korea, a country of roughly 25 million people, is in the midst of a severe drought, which is contributing to food shortages that are leaving more than 10 million people without enough food. Even those lucky enough to have enough to eat have to suffer the indignity of living under a hereditary despotism of men with ridiculous haircuts.

But it’s not all bad news for the folks living in this nation-sized penitentiary. After all, on August 15th, North Koreans will get to sleep in a half an hour later.

That’s right, according to a report in the BBC, the North Korean government announced on Friday that it would be setting up its own time zone, which will be 30 minutes earlier than that which it currently uses. According to the report, the government made the decision to return to the time used in the Korean peninsula before Japan colonized it in 1910.

Before that time, all of Korea was 8.5 hours ahead of GMT, instead of the nine hours used in Korea and Japan today.

    Excellent LL.

Every time I think a Dem can’t do anything else to totally piss me off, I’m wrong. Not only is Schumer a coward he has more of an allegiance to Bibi than to the leader of his Party and the leader of the USA, President Obama. He’s willing to flush Americans down to the toilet to appease the hardliners, warmongers and Netanyahu. But I will be shocked if ANY Senate Dem calls him out.

  35. 67 EricFive
    August 7, 2015 at 2:41 pm

Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad saying he wanted to “wipe Israel off the map” was a godsend for the hardliners in Israel. Conservatives used that statement to stoke fears of Israeli voters and have firmly maintained power through political exploitation of that fear. The Iran Deal will take that fear off the table. This is why I think AIPAC is going all out in an effort to kill the deal by exerting its influence over Israel’s colony, the USA. Without the Iranian boogeyman, how can they stoke the fear necessary for them to maintain power? How can they justify the untold billions it receives from American and German taxpayers for protection from Iran? On a side note, does anyone know if Bibi is acting the fool with regard to Angela Merkel, or is that treatment only reserved for PBO?

    • 68 0388jojothecat
      August 7, 2015 at 7:44 pm

Before PBO leaves office he is knocking down all the boogy men that the warmongers need to go to war….Osama Bin Ladin, dead; Daesh, Iraq & turkey on board to take them out, Taliban leaders, dead; Iran, Nuke Deal – done. All the warmongers are being revealed for who they are and what they want to do. If Americans are too stupid to understand the UN & rest of the world can not be fooled.

Maybe a little bit of linguistic and news coverage wise amusement for everyone on here since I have been browsing some German news sources for the debate coverage.
So here is some fun stuff for you: 😛

The German press was referring to Donald Trump after last night´s debate as “Trumpeltier”

(closely related to “Trampeltier” which is a German synonym for “camel” but literally translates as “stomping animal”, also used metaphorically to describe someone with little grace and sensitivity.)

A few quotes from my email provider´s article this morning which was titled: “This crybaby wants to be US presidetn” (translated)

“Should we just gently smile at him? Ignore him? One might want to. But we can´t. Trump is factor to American politics whether someone likes this or not. The crazy part of this though is that nobody can be sure if shows [like the one staged during the debate] actually harn him. But one can suspect they will. His fans might be enthusiastic about his chuzpe [yiddish for brazenness]”

“What was that? he could theoretically imagine running as an Independent to take away some Republican votes? Under normal circumstances this would be the kill switch for any candidate. But what is even normal, according to Trump?”

Quote from another online news source these days:

“The things happening in US presidential campaigns sometimes look more like some crazy freak show than a serious fight for the White House. Especially amongst the Republicans, crazy seems to reign.”

    And yet another:

“The first tv debate of leading Republican presidential hopefuls was a meeting of ten egocentrics, but one one-man-show.”

  41. August 7, 2015 at 2:58 pm

“If you liked the war in Iraq, you probably love the idea of going to war with Iran.

It’s the same agenda from the exact same people who took us into Iraq just over a decade ago.

The hawks on the right keep crying that we need a “better deal.”

They say that this deal will help Iran to support terrorism in the Middle East – and that ultimately this will enable Iran as a regional power and destabilize the region.” more @ tweet link

    Dear LL,
I know we have moved on to another post, and I also know my posts are still getting sent to Mediation, or whatever it is called, as I have not yet passed clearance, perhaps because Chips is the only one to decide those things and she is relaxing, as she should be.

But I had to write in the hopes that this will eventually make its way to you to simply say SUPERB. Before I finished the second paragraph I was screaming Brilliant! and Yes!! This !!. And I was laughing because I was picturing Republicans, and probably quite a few others, scrambling for their dictionaries as they looked up some of your “big” words to find out if you were insulting or complimenting Schumer.

Thank you for your continued wonderful and insightful contributions to this website. I feel so privileged to have found TOD and to have enough time in my day to enjoy it and learn from it. You are a member of a quite amazing group of very dedicated and brilliant people.
