Jessica Guynn: Exclusive: Venture Capital To Make Diversity Pledge

Venture capitalists will pledge concrete measures to bring greater diversity to their predominantly white male profession during a high-profile event at the White House. For its part, the National Venture Capital Association is making a commitment “to advance opportunity for women and underrepresented minorities in the entrepreneurial ecosystem,” the trade group says in a letter to President Obama that was exclusively shared with USA TODAY. The trade group’s task force, formed in December, to tackle the profession’s lack of diversity “is committed to developing both near and long-term solutions to effect positive change,” the letter reads.

It was signed by 45 venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, Battery Ventures and Norwest Venture Partners. Among the steps the National Venture Capital Association is promising to take: to conduct and share research that measures diversity at venture capital firms and their portfolio companies, develop model human resources policies to encourage more inclusive work environments and participate in programs to encourage women and minorities to pursue careers as entrepreneurs or venture capitalists. These are just initial steps to address the yawning racial and gender gap, said Silicon Valley venture capitalist Kate Mitchell.

Wesley Lowery: Police Shot And Killed More People In July Than Any Other Month So Far This Year

More people were shot and killed by on-duty police officers in July than in any other month so far in 2015. At least 103 people were shot and killed by police officers last month, according to a Washington Post database tracking all fatal on-duty police shootings this year. That is 13 more fatal police shootings than March, the second most deadly month, during which 90 people were shot and killed by police. As of today, The Post has tracked 570 fatal police shootings.

Julia Horowitz: Thousands Of California Convicts To Regain Voting Rights

California restored voting rights Tuesday to tens of thousands of criminals serving sentences under community supervision, reversing a decision by a state official that they could not participate in elections. Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced the settlement between the state and the American Civil Liberties Union of California, which sued on behalf of nearly 60,000 convicts who became ineligible to vote when then Secretary of State Debra Bowen determined in 2014 that community supervision was equivalent to parole. Her decision stemmed from a 2011

realignment of the state’s criminal justice law that aims to reduce overcrowding in state prisons by sending people convicted of less serious crimes to county jails or alternative treatment programs. A judge later overturned Bowen’s policy, stating that community supervision and parole are different. Bowen’s office appealed the decision, but Padilla, a fellow Democrat, decided to let the court ruling stand. Earlier this summer, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, vetoed a bill that would have extended the right to vote to roughly 40,000 convicts on probation or parole.

Good morning. It’s absolutely wonderful that our President and fellow Democrats are going to be focusing on voter rights while the Republican clowns will be outdoing each other with new ways to deprive people of their health, livelihood, civil liberties and right to vote. The contrast will be stark.

Thank you NerdyWonka – fabulous rise and shine – never has such a diverse group of people been to events at the White House than has happened in the past 6 years.

Am reading about the pretenders and their debates – not one of them is anyway ready to provide leadership – a minor review of the last few years by a media person would make this abundantly clear. Their only use appears to be to provide for an evening of the “drinking game”.

    • August 5, 2015 at 9:39 am

The establishment of the republican party thinks they could have a good candidate in Kasich. So he had to be in.

Watch the media after the debate. The task to promote the “good” candidates will begin. Kasich will be “pushed”. Walker has too many skeletons. Idem from Christie. Bush wants it bad and is powerful, but he is vulnerable in a general election because of his last name. The more I think of it, Kasich will become the preferred candidate of the media… They’ll give him maximum exposure. Broadcast his speeches, lots of interviews, etc. To give him name recognition ASAP.

Idris Elba Makes History as First Male ‘Maxim’ Cover (Photo)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Actor Idris Elba graces the cover of Maxim’s September issue, the first solo-male cover in the history of the men’s publication. “We’ve never in U.S. Maxim history had a man on the cover solo,” new editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear told Racked. “This is the very first time, and there was no one else in the world more badass than Idris.”
Elba is the perfect embodiment of what Lanphear wanted a man on the cover to be: “He’s multi-dimensional, he’s complex, he’s sophisticated, but he’s down to earth. It was funny when on set, I was like, ‘Is there anything this guy can’t do?’ He’s an award-winning actor, he’s a DJ, his capsule clothing line for Superdry is about to hit stores. The guy broke the [British] land speed record, which hasn’t been touched since like 1928. He’s sort of a living, breathing superhero.”

this is what I’ve been saying…he’s not appealing to a sliver of the GOP. He’s straight in the MAINSTREAM GOP.

    ……………………….

It’s Wrong to Call Donald Trump a ‘Fringe’ Candidate

A new Bloomberg Politics poll of Republican and Republican-leaning voters demolishes the claim that he appeals to mouth-breathing xenophobes and nobody else.

Donald Trump’s rise to a position of total dominance in the Republican presidential field has been accompanied by a dismissive snort from Beltway mandarins that Trump is merely a “fringe” candidate. The idea, in essence, is that Trump has a strong but narrow appeal to a group of mouth-breathing xenophobes and practically nobody else.

Things I’ve been thinking about for awhile. Of course, my tax extension will be up in September. I’m going to make an appt with my accountant and just get it done. Self-employed = many receipts to sort through. But I need to get that done. however, I’m seeing some habits and institutional problems in the Democratic party and general progressive responses to the clown bus that I’d like to articulate.

      • 87 0388jojothecat
        August 5, 2015 at 9:42 am

Why do Americans feel that if they vote for someone who is rich and famous but NO experience in Government to run a state or in this case an entire country, they would get a much better result. California, Minnesota, etc., have experienced the disaster of voting for an inexperienced idiot who shoots off their mouth and have not done it again. At least Reagan was a one term Governor before he became President but that was at a very low time in our country. I am hoping that because of President Obama there are too many people who are paying attention and will get involved, will not let someone like Trump near the WH. The only good part is Trump does not trust the GOP and does not completely hate the DEMs like Reagan. Listening to that elderly woman in that focus group when that man was trying to tell her that Trump is NOT the person she thinks he is and all she could say was “she did not care”. If it were not for PBO she would be eating cat food, no or more expensive Medicare, and living on the street. This country would be in baaaad shape right now if it were not for PBO.

        • August 5, 2015 at 9:50 am

We cannot appeal to these people I am convinced that their belief system of white privilege and racism will not allow them, to see what is really before them,….our only hope is to expand the Obama Coalition and to get those folks to the polls….

This one sentence you’ve written, prettyfoot, sums up this moment in history in which we find ourselves.

Selecting the candidate “on a death march to the nomination” as Jon Stewart said last night, is the exact opposite to our path to victory.

          August 5, 2015 at 9:54 am

Can’t remember where I saw the quote recently but I’ll try to paraphrase: Americans who vote GOP all think they are millionaires, just in between cashing in on their millions.

It’s a bad paraphrase but I hope you get the meaning. If we let our rivers become sewers, our air become unbreathable and our food unsafe, we, too, will find “opportunity”. It’s tantalizing but so divorced from reality. Trump supporters say he is “one of us” and that “hard work” got him a fortune. That, and Daddy’s money. He also is a master at soundbites – the hate is harnessed as identifying “problems” and Trump makes it sound like there are easy solutions. It’s a poisonous combination.

So true prettyfoot and Vicki. 57 I have a brother who surprisingly is a Christian, who is always looking for a way to become “rich quick” schemes. He knows he is one scheme away from being a millionaire and does not want the Government to tax the rich because one day he will be rich. He does not believe PBO is a Christian because he never says “God” or “Jesus” enough for him like Bush did although Bush did things against what Jesus and God believed like helping the sick, poor, and not being involved in politics. All they know is abortion bad and gays are bad and the DEMs believe women have to make this choice. God and Jesus gives us the choice to believe or not to believe but the Christian Right does not.

I have a sister-in-law who is the same way. She and my brother-in-law rely on Social Security & Medicare, yet they vote for the soulless and heartless GOP. Because “God”, and abortion, and those dirty immigrants. I’m sure she feels the same way about LGBT, but we have a gay nephew and she knows to keep her mouth shut. She wants a “Christian” nation. If she wants a theocracy, let her move to Afghanistan. I’ve had it with these loons.

It was in May when NBC has announced an open casting call for the lead role of Dorothy in the network’s upcoming holiday special “The Wiz Live!,” set to air on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Revealed this morning, just moments ago, on NBC’s “The Today Show,” newcomer Shanice Williams has been cast as Dorothy, beating out the competition. This could be the break of a lifetime for the actress/singer.

Williams joins David Alan Grier, who will play the Cowardly Lion; Queen Latifah stars as the Wiz; Mary J. Blige will play Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West; and Stephanie Mills (who played Dorothy in the original Broadway production of “The Wiz”) will portray Auntie Em in NBC’s December production.

We had her 80th in our garden 10 years ago. We also surprised her early because our other son was getting married and we had the rehearsal dinner in our yard and then secretly had her cake and a huge card later.
