Good morning folks. What would I do without Nerdy Wonka? I am always late, nobody wakes me up. I love this paragraph, he said so much and I do hope the leaders are listening. Watch our MSM harp on his comment about winning again!

OT, hope this hasn’t been discussed. They are now saying that Sandra Bland had pot in her system which she could only have had while in jail. How on earth does someone get pot in local jail in the time she was locked up? This makes no sense to me.

Misspat, this just seemed so ridiculous. So the cops are running a drug ring from country jail? Can’t even blame the victim here. As the saying goes: tell the truth & shame the devil.

Good morning TOD. Another snoreysleepyhead checking in.
Moving and important address this morning, Mr. President. I wonder how the African leaders who refuse to leave office when their terms are over felt about POTUS’ remarks.

The media will no doubt focus on the “I could win again,” part.

I’d also like to see if President Obama’s remarks about LGBT rights resonates with Kenyans. It’s great that we have a President who speaks out about civil rights even if they are not respected in other countries.

Killer robots: Tech experts warn against AI arms race

More than 1,000 tech experts, scientists and researchers have written a letter warning about the dangers of autonomous weapons.

In the latest outcry over “killer robots”, the letter warns that “a military AI [artificial intelligence] arms race is a bad idea”.

Among the signatories are scientist Stephen Hawking, entrepreneur Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

The letter will be presented at an international AI conference today.

“Killer robots” are currently the subject of much debate and have recently been discussed by committees at the United Nations, which is considering the potential for a ban on certain types of autonomous weapons.

Now, the experts have called for a specific ban on the use of artificial intelligence to manage weapons that would be “beyond meaningful human control”.

“Just as most chemists and biologists have no interest in building chemical or biological weapons, most AI researchers have no interest in building AI weapons – and do not want others to tarnish their field by doing so,” they add.

    ///

But Eric Horvitz – a Microsoft Research chief who signed the autonomous weapons letter – has posted a video online in defence of other AI research.

“You look at how much computation has done for our society, for socio-economics, in applications like healthcare – it’s been incredible. AI will change so many things,” he said.

“With that comes a lot of hope, a lot of possible benefits and also some concerns.

“I think there are very interesting questions that need to be solved along the way, but I expect largely positive beneficial results coming out of this research largely because we guide it.”

Good morning, Chips, NW and TODer OBOTs.

LOVE this new quote from PBO about winning a third term. There is NO DOUBT he would win in a landslide against any of these GOP mopes. That’s probably why they all waited until he was leaving the WH!!

Shows how much the republicans like the politicians they voted for – Trump is (I think) the only current pretender who isn’t – a current or former governor or a current or former member of congress.

This is a very good read:

    Also note this important change:

“….other outside petitions platforms are starting to tap into the We the People platform. We’re excited to announce today that Change.org is choosing to integrate with the We the People platform, meaning the future signatures of its 100 million users will count toward the threshold for getting an official response from the Administration. We’re also opening up the code behind petitions.whitehouse.gov on Drupal.org and GitHub, which empowers other governments and outside organizations to create their own versions of this platform to engage their own citizens and constituencies.”

And this will be happening today:

    • July 28, 2015 at 10:19 am

I’ve searched the petition web site and can’t find any trace of the 47 traitors petition. Does anyone remember how it was worded? I searched “47 traitors”, “Iran”, “Logan Act.”

Have not seen anything about the response from Latinos of Jeb basically saying that he doesn’t support a path to citizenship for the undocumented.

Oh, you can stay, work, pay taxes, but you’ll never be a citizen.

Am I the only one looking side eye at this?

But, because he said it in Frank Luntz-approved ‘respectful’ language, it’s supposed to be all good?

It’s high time latinos turned out at the polls. Their participation rate last few cycles has been piss poor.

Compared to who? 48% of Hispanic eligible voters turned out to vote in 2012.

48% with all that pushing and prodding is not something to celebrate. And what about non-presidential years?

          • July 28, 2015 at 10:28 am

I’m not celebrating. I’m just saying that voting in this country is dismal across the board.

Historically, Hispanic voter turnout rates are among the lowest of any race or ethnic group in midterm elections. In 2010, 31.2% of Hispanics voted, compared with 48.6% of whites, 44% of blacks and 31% of Asians. (More precise voter turnout numbers won’t be available until the Census Bureau releases its data in spring 2015.)

You’ll notice it’s not that far off from the Asian vote.

This issue is too close to home for me so I’m going to end it here.

I think I’m just feeling very exhausted by and defensive about the escalating heightening of RW negativity and scapegoating toward Latinos lately: murderers, rapists, lazy dropouts who are taking everyone’s jobs, etc. etc. etc. There is a long history of this with little to no understanding of the POV of Latinos, especially first and second generation (very true w/r/t voting). President Obama and his admin have done a great deal to relieve a lot of these misconceptions but we have a very long way to go.

My feelings are not in any way personal to you. I hope you understand.

I see the GOP letting latinos know how they really feel about them as a good thing. In today’s GOP climate, no candidate supportive of Latinos will win the primaries. Racial panic and hate has forced the GOP into abandoning the long game, which would have entailed coopting latinos by making them “honorary Whites” or at least not being so openly hostile toward a growing demographic. Latinos will remember the hate, bile and disrespect and only the most delusional will vote for the GOP. Many Latinos who thought they were “White” are getting a wake up call. This can only help Dems keep the White House.

The MSM is so scared that PBO could actually very well WIN (and by a damn landslide too) if he were able to run for a 3rd term…that they are scrambling to “poll” that notion…to reassure themselves and their GOP/teabag followers

His comments have them going off on a tear…

I agree that PBO’s remark was deliberate. It may be another way to signal that VP Biden is, indeed, going to run in 2016.

    • 95 Vicki
      July 28, 2015 at 11:50 am

Jeff—-It’s an elaborate dance and display for their donors.
Here is what I think will happen:

The first Senate vote to approve the Iran Deal may fail as Schumer and other AIPAC senators vote against it.
Then PBO vetoes the failed vote.
Schumer and others won’t join the vote to Override the veto and…….

      Deal is approved!!!!
      PBO Wins!!!!! The World wins!!!
Schumer, et al protect themselves. have it both ways.

Since this is my view I am largely ignoring the nonsense coming out of our legislators, many of whom still can’t pronounce nuclear.
