Say Her Name: Sandra Bland

Stephen A. Crockett Jr.: Sandra Bland Drove to Texas to Start a New Job, So How Did She End Up Dead In Jail?

On July 9, 28-year-old Sandra Bland of Naperville, Ill., drove to Texas to start a new job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M. On July 10, police stopped Bland just outside the campus for allegedly failing to signal while changing lanes. Police claim that during the stop she became combative and that she was charged with “assault on a public servant.” Bland was arrested. On July 13, around 9 a.m., before her family could bail her out, Bland was found dead inside a Waller County, Texas, jail cell. Police claim she died from “self-inflicted asphyxiation.”

Her family and friends say that is impossible; that the woman they know, who fought strongly against police brutality and had just gotten a new job, would never have committed suicide. “I do suspect foul play,” a friend, Cheryl Nanton, told ABC 7. “I believe that we are all 100 percent in belief that she did not do harm to herself.” Video obtained by ABC 7 of Bland’s arrest doesn’t appear to show Bland being combative with officers, but does show two officers on top of Bland, who can be heard questioning the officers’ methods of restraint.

    The one unhappy consequence of this deal with Iran is that US businesses are the only ones going to be left out in the cold for all the pent up demand in Iran. Other than some specified things like airplanes, it is my understanding that US businesses will not be allowed to do business in Iran because of remaining US sanctions. So while the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany already are on their way to Iran to establish relations, our businesses will not be allowed to do so. Nice going Congress!

      Back to Sandra Bland – thank you so much for this Nerdy.

      I’m sorry, but right now Iran pales next to the ceaseless killing by cops of black Americans.

      See you all later.

        Ms. Chips thanks to you for giving us this place. Thank you Nerdy for doing what the MSM refuses to do – letting the world know that #BlackLivesMatter. This is beyond my comprehension at this point. I literally don’t know whether to scream, cry or pretend I’m somewhere other than the USA right now. President Obama gives me hope and I’m trying to hang on with all my might.

        Chips, I’m sorry if my post upset you. Certainly that was not my intent. We each deal with things in our own way in our own time. I am in TX and was aware of Sandra Bland’s killing before this. Actually, I could name several others for you that have occurred in TX in recent months that never made it to the national headlines. Each makes me ill. I don’t have any answers. And honestly, since the news started reporting the Chattanooga shooting this afternoon I am enraged that the media is so quick to call the death of these 4 Marines a domestic terrorist attack but the FBI has so far refused to do so when it was 9 members of the AME church. And the media coverage the night that occurred was NOTHING like this. Again, I don’t have any answers. There are some days when you wonder if it will ever end, and some days when I wonder if anything we try to do has any lasting consequences.

      I agree. As a white American I am heartsick that this is happening to my fellow americans just because of skin color..and these people call themselves Christian?

      • July 16, 2015 at 7:56 pm

        I can only separate this by accepting that Christianity and culture have two different meanings. A racist culture supersedes even the heart of a devout Christian.

    “self-inflicted asphyxiation.” What a load of BS. You can bet that when she, a young black woman, questioned their methods is when her death warrant was signed.

    CNN and all the news is calling what happened today a “Terrorist Attack”, why? Oh because the guy has a muslim name…see how that works. White guy kills nine people in a church and one being a state senator, leaves one alive to warn the other you see that’s a hate crime not an act of terror because he’s white.

    • July 16, 2015 at 5:44 pm

    The quote from Mikki Kendall’s quote: “Respectability cannot save you” is the sad truth. My generation, the first to go to college in large numbers, were told that of we were educated, if we spoke Standard English, dressed well, and “carried ourselves well,” then white people would be less likely to lynch us; that if we were smart (even though we had to be twice as good to get half as much) we could not be denied. Well, the 21st century in the USA has shown us that none of this matters. We are being hunted down by so-called law enforcement and being exterminated. Not one of us, of any age or station, is safe anywhere and there is no one to protect us. The fact that the assassins, the terrorists are police officers is a nightmare. Our hearts break whenever another one of us is martyred by the unmerited racial hatred that we live with everyday, but because we do not really expect anything else, we go on living, and fighting, and hoping and praying that maybe, someday, we will really be free. One thing that this country has to fear is that A-A’s will become radicalized because we are being shown everyday, from the president on down that we are not considered to be citizens here, so why be loyal?

    The look on this President’s face today. I sometimes think that my respect for this President cannot grow, but it does. Looking at his face. Him being in that prison. I can’t even put into words how moved I am that he went, and it’s not just because he went, but it is. Because, he went to where so many are forgotten about in our society. A prison industrial complex that has torn an abyss through the community. And, to know that my President understands ALL OF THAT.

  29. 55 globalcitizenlinda
    July 16, 2015 at 6:53 pm

    it is hard for me to believe the claim of suicide;

    either (a) someone did something to her once in jail;

    (b) police injured her during the arrest

    Ms. Bland is saying on the tape that the police had slammed her head so hard on the ground that she couldn’t even hear;

    could it be that the police crack her skull during the arrest? since there is nothing to indicate that she ever received medical attention, it is possible that she incurred some internal injury on her head

    • 56 hopefruit2
      July 16, 2015 at 6:57 pm

      Indeed Linda, this explanation sounds FAR more plausible than suicide. There has to be an independent autopsy and investigation…..

      • 57 globalcitizenlinda
        July 16, 2015 at 8:01 pm

    how many deaths happen and the rest of the nation never hears the names of the victims and the circumstances under which their lives were taken?

    On the day the president makes an important point about the criminal injustice (sic) system, this comes out. She died all because of a small traffic infraction? The police accountability to its public seems to be zero, even when they are caught redhanded.

    Of course not all cops are bad. However, just as pedophiles will often seek employment to be around children, some racists are drawn to join the police force as a means to be foot soldiers defending the doctrine of white supremacy by keeping Black folks “in their place”. The uniform gives them a license to kill or mistreat Black people. A listen to police radio transmissions, or viewing of postings on police chat rooms will display some of the worst racist hate for Black people. If police radio transmissions and chat room posts were filled with anti-Semitic postings and police were killing unarmed Jewish people, the broader public would be able to make the connection. But since the victims are Black (and by definition deserve whatever horrors the U.S. can dish out) the connection between racism within law enforcement and the murder of Black citizens seems to never be acknowledged. A minor traffic infraction leads to a Black woman’s murder. I am sure the usual suspects will make excuses for the cops and attempt to blame the dead victim. Black folks would be wise to remember who these folks are, because they will make excuses to justify your murder too. No matter where you went to school, no matter how much money you make or taxes you pay, some folks will always hate you due solely to the color of your skin. Fact is, they will often hate you more if you attain an education and carry yourself with grace and dignity and embody the “American Dream”. And they will find a way to blame YOU for their hate.
