TALLAHASSEE — In a precedent-setting ruling Thursday, the Florida Supreme Court overturned the state’s congressional districts drawn by the GOP-led Legislature and ordered a new map with eight districts drawn in time for the 2016 election.

“We reverse the trial court’s order approving the remedial redistricting plan because we conclude that, as a result of legal errors, the trial court failed to give the proper effect to its finding of unconstitutional intent, which mandated a more meaningful remedy commensurate with the constitutional violations it found,” wrote Justice Barbara Pariente in the majority opinion.

Ed Sebesta: It’s not as direct as electoral politics, it’s more a matter of soft power relating to how you affect people’s thinking. There’s this plantation mythology and you shape your consciousness around the idea that the Confederacy is some ideal. But the thing about the Confederacy is that it’s about advancing inequality.

Once you have this neo-Confederate mentality at some level of your consciousness, I don’t really have to tell you how to vote or give you a position on some issue — you’ll have this idea already, it naturally comes out of your consciousness. Neo-Confederacy forms American

this is good article re: the reach of the confederacy….

however it was the last question that got push back from me….

there is a monument to the Confederate Soldiers in Arlington Cemetery…(Imagine that)….the President has done what all other presidents have done before him…which was to lay a wreath there…..because he was AA…they thought that he would defy tradition and not lay it there….there was no chastising all the white Presidents who did the same…however they think that it is ok to chastise the AA president

That land, 1,100 acres belonged to Robet E. Lee’s wife and was seized by the Union at the end of the civil war.

          July 9, 2015 at 4:19 pm

Yes….it is a very interesting story.

How Arlington National Cemetery Came to Be

The fight over Robert E. Lee’s beloved home—seized by the U.S. government during the Civil War—went on for decades

One afternoon in May 1861, a young Union Army officer went rushing into the mansion that commanded the hills across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. “You must pack up all you value immediately and send it off in the morning,” Lt. Orton Williams told Mary Custis Lee, wife of Robert E. Lee, who was away mobilizing Virginia’s military forces as the country hurtled toward the bloodiest war in its history.

Mary Lee dreaded the thought of abandoning Arlington, the 1,100-acre estate she had inherited from her father, George Washington Parke Custis, upon his death in 1857. Custis, the grandson of Martha Washington, had been adopted by George Washington when Custis’ father died in 1781. Beginning in 1802, as the new nation’s capital took form across the river, Custis started building Arlington, his showplace mansion. Probably modeled after the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens, the columned house floated among the Virginia hills as if it had been there forever, peering down upon the half-finished capital at its feet. When Custis died, Arlington passed to Mary Lee, his only surviving child, who had grown up, married and raised seven children and buried her parents there. In correspondence, her husband referred to the place as “our dear home,” the spot “where my attachments are more strongly placed than at any other place in the world.” If possible, his wife felt an even stronger attachment to the property.

I was very disappointed in what Chris Everett had to say about Serena and Sharapova today. Sharapova doesn’t have more endorsement because she market herself better. She has more because she is consider more attractive woman because she is white, and Serena is black and not consider that attractive. That is my opinion and I don’t think I am wrong either.

    • July 9, 2015 at 4:08 pm

Alot of ugly things have been said about Serena and Venus. I refuse to even read comments about them anymore.

I don’t think beauty has anything to do with…I think Serena’s race has plenty to do with it. Ms Serena & Venus Williams are both smart and beautiful women.

      • July 9, 2015 at 4:54 pm

I think their race has alot to do with it too, and I said that in my comment, and I also think that the know it all in the advertising agencies don’t think that the Williams women are attractive enough. As a black woman you know that we know all about it, if you don’t look like Hallie Berry, or Rihanna.

Whatever happens at the Iran talks, I am very proud of SOS Kerry. He’s conducted himself with dignity, strength and integrity through this whole arduous process, even though he’s been in a lot of physical pain and discomfort. He’s exactly the kind of steady, sensible hand you want to have in these negotiations right now.

    • July 9, 2015 at 4:20 pm

What a great president he would have made. If it were not for the shenanigans in Ohio…

I’m so happy he has the chance to shine as a great Secretary of State. He should have been nominated already in 2008. But President Obama had to do something big to heal the wounds of the primaries. President Obama was also wise to include Hillary into the administration. Her remaining in the Senate would have created even more power games than the ones we witnessed in the last few years within the democratic party.

Second all the praise for SOS Kerry. Not only did PBO want to heal the breach in the party, but I think he knew he needed Kerry as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee. He was vital in that spot. Just think of what would have happened in the first term with Menendez as chair of that committee!

The U.S. military campaign against self-proclaimed Islamic State may be focused on the male fighters conducting attacks across Iraq and Syria. But the richest human intelligence source to fall into U.S. hands to date is the widow of a senior ISIS member. She is revealing details about the terror group’s inner workings—including the existence of a parallel women’s network within ISIS that’s responsible for recruitment, retention, intelligence, and sexual slavery in the so-called caliphate. U.S. military personnel captured Umm Sayyaf during a May raid targeting her husband, who was also ISIS’s chief financier who went by the nom de guerre Abu Sayyaf. After engaging in “hand to hand” combat with ISIS fighters, U.S. troops killed Abu Sayyaf and took his computers, cellphones, and documents that detailed how the group obtained and distributed as much as $2 million a day. Umm Sayyaf is now the top female ISIS captive in U.S. custody, being held in Iraq and providing loads of intelligence beyond what American analysts found on the computers and cellphones seized during the raid that killed her husband, who ran ISIS’s oil and gas operations.

Umm Sayyaf’s marriage to an ISIS higher-up gave her rare insights into how men run the financial and tactical operations. But she also played a commanding role in her own right, helping to run ISIS’s networks of women fighters and operatives, as well as playing enforcer for the men’s sex slaves.“She was a principal adviser,” a senior defense official explained. “She has a lot of details.”…There are no official numbers of women with ISIS. But there are roughly 500 women on Twitter who claim to be residents of ISIS, and they are often the faces of ISIS’s propaganda war, telling other women they should join the caliphate. Experts assume that the ratio of men to women within ISIS is 10 to 1. With estimates of ISIS’s strength beginning at 20,000 fighters, that would mean at least 2,000 women are part of the self-proclaimed Caliphate. Whatever the ratio, Umm Sayyaf has been so valuable that U.S. interrogators are learning more weeks into her questioning and have yet to decide what should happen to her next….continued”

Why on earth would the intelligence community reveal that to the news?

      • July 9, 2015 at 9:20 pm

I’m sure they wanted to rattle some cages and see what kind of chatter they can pickup (they probably maximized all info the they were going to get and are putting this out to see how accurate the leads really are)…also this goes to show how significant the raid into Syria really was and what a goldmine of info they are still utilizing as actionable intel or propaganda & they just started a new this new venture which is was timed with this *leak*

Just my two cents….I may be wrong Dudette, but I don’t think this was an accident.

“It took 10 days for two Tibetan monks to painstakingly design a mandala for the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday. After a series of 15-hour days, their creation was blessed by the 14th Dalai Lama Tuesday morning at the University of California Irvine. The Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who is best known for preaching kindness and his advocacy work for Tibetans, has been celebrating his birthday amid a Global Compassion Summit at the university. Tibetan Buddhists consider the Dalai Lama to be a reincarnation of Avalokiteśvara, an enlightened being. The mandala is meant to represent joy, equanimity, loving-kindness and compassion, according to organizers, but it also symbolizes impermanence. To follow up on points I made yesterday:
Not only has newspaper opposition to the Nuclear Deal/Iran/PBO disappeared in NYC but so have the vicious Loud ads.

In Israel, The Iran deal, similarly has been changed from Big headlines everyday to small stories here and there.

The end has been decided but I can’t say what it is with confidence.

But I can ask you, If this story was going to end with Huge Hate Anti-Obama headlines, do you think that the emphasis would have diminished so much??
I think that the odds fully favor success. PBO will prevail. Hope will overcome fear. And decency will win over Hate.

If Hate was in the lead this would be the biggest story of the day, is my guess. What is yours?

It looks like a different TONE?

Democratic presidential candidate and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Thursday that the Confederate flag at the South Carolina Capitol has “long been due to come down,” but he also called for some historical perspective on the issue, suggesting people should not use the debate over the flag to demonize the South.

“The Confederate battle flag was a battle flag. It assumed a lot of unfortunate racist and divisionist overtones during the civil rights era,” Webb said in an interview on “CBS This Morning,” his first with a national broadcast outlet since announcing his candidacy earlier this month. “At the same time, I’ve been trying to reinforce that we need to remember two other parts of our history here. One is the very complex history of the Civil War itself.”

////// And then he added this……Shameful.

“Only 5 percent of the white people in the South owned slaves, and only 25 percent of the whites in the South had anything to do economically” with the institution of slavery, Webb said. “At the same time, there were four slave states that remained in the Union during the war: Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware.”

Yeah, but, Webb, 100% of the confederate soldiers of the 19th century were fighting on the side of slavery, no matter how you slice and dice it. This is the 21st century, Webb, get with the program or get off the national stage. In fact, just get off the national stage. You’re an embarrassment.

There is another affect from President Obama being at the forefront of the times that is very powerful, he is seeding this new understanding of progress and change into the consciousness of humanity where it has the potential to grow and evolve and reshape the way we think and if we think differently our actions will begin to change.
We are moving away from a fundamentalist way of seeing things into a new way of understanding and experiencing ourselves. President Obama is helping to lead the way. This is what progress looks like. This is how we progress.
