Good morning from hot, hot, Montana. We had a small rain storm last night that finally helped to cool us down. It is to be in the 90’s for the next two weeks. It has never been this hot this long this early. Usually our night cool down but they are barely getting down to 60. I am going out today to see if I can find a portable air conditioner. Have never had one in the 35 years we have lived here. But there is no climate change.

JOB our prayers are with you and your son.

It is a good day, President Barack Obama is still President!!!!

Wow, Mt. I hadn’t realized that Montanans don’t have air conditioning. Houses here just don’t see without them. Our summers are usually brutal, but today it’s cool and rainy.

        June 30, 2015 at 9:09 am

Most of us don’t, even when it was hot before the heat of the day is 5-8pm then as soon as the sun goes down it would usually drop into the 40’s at night. All we needed was fans and to close up the house from noon -8. Our house was always cool and comfortable. I have never experienced anything like this.

        Enjoy you cool weather!!!!!

    • June 30, 2015 at 10:03 am

Similar situation here, mtmarilyn – way too hot and dry for May&June – now what to us feels like relentless heat, and we generally have no AC built in either. Some of the newer homes probably do. This senior housing I am in has AC in the common areas and the hallways, but we are asked not to leave our doors open especially during the hottest part of the days. It’s pretty brutal. Couple that with the fact that too often my downstairs neighbor who wears way too much perfume, which causes migraine for me – opens her windows and I am forced to close mine, just to function! 90F in the apartment and no relief! Have a Janice now to open up, and a light fog has come off the water – definitely taking advantage of that to cool the place down a bit! Kinda scary to think what is coming for is all. ❤

      • June 30, 2015 at 10:06 am

This seems to be happening to most of us. I am now getting up earlier and taking naps in the afternoon. Hope you get some relief. Also hope the neighbor gets the word about being sensitive to others problems. So many have problems with perfumes.

      GM MTM.

Agree with you about how it’s the nighttime lows that are SO concerning.

The reason southern Californians hug the coast is for the ocean influence, which gives us our typical “June gloom” (before climate change, cool Winters then pleasant Springs meant the ocean moisture was drawn into the interior deserts, giving the coast blessed overcast relief from Summer’s scorching temps in June).

Fewer overcast days this June, and cannot believe the nighttime lows this week — hasn’t dipped below 70F (!) which is 2 months early for us, just like the weather this year — this is why plants and animal behavior becomes skewed, having to adapt to Summer 2 months early — if they can’t adapt, they either become extinct in that area or move further north or to higher elevations.

Unfortunately, North America seems to be running out of the cooler north/higher elevation alternatives. 😦

Sorry that you’re having to buy A/C — I’ve lived all my adult life without air conditioning, which was only uncomfortable for a few days in Aug/Sep when temps went above 100F.

Since the nights don’t cool down, there’s no chance for the interior to cool down with the windows open (which is why it’s tolerable to live without A/C here if you don’t live too far inland or in a low valley).

Never thought I’d be relying on A/C in June, but here we are.

      • 32 mtmarilyn
        June 30, 2015 at 11:05 am

I don’t understand how people can look at the trends and not understand that something is drastically changing. When the night’s don’t get below 70 we are in trouble. Now we have to watch out for each other and be careful about heat stroke.

    • June 30, 2015 at 11:12 am

Stay cool, pack up your camper again and head to higher ground. 😻
May I also tag on thoughts and prayers from the heart for JOB. Re-read some of her poems last night and sent positive thoughts. Lit a candle too after reading M Pamela’s thoughts. The sight has changed.

      • 34 mtmarilyn
        June 30, 2015 at 12:06 pm

The camper has air conditioning so I may just sleep out there.

        • June 30, 2015 at 12:20 pm

There you go. We’ve had 90F too but we have air conditioning. Our split level is half underground and with ceiling fans and standing fans we can get buy. Our air conditioner broke down on some of the hot days. Hubby went fishing. 😊
I can’t take heat. Used to luv it.
We have what is called a heat pump. In winter it draws on cold air and turns it warm. In the summertime it turns it cool. Only the fan runs on electricity. Even when the electricity is out it will stay around 55F to keep everything from freezing. I recommend it to everyone as an energy-saver.

Do you know what time zone JOB is in?

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/30/politics/obama-approval-rating-cnn-poll/index.html

Could Barack Obama’s great week mark a turning point in his poll numbers?

After months of stagnant approval ratings, a new CNN/ORC poll finds that for the first time in more than two years, 50% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the presidency. And his overall ratings are bolstered by increasingly positive reviews of his treatment of race relations and the economy.

The new poll follows a week in which two Supreme Court cases boosted the president’s legacy by upholding the government subsidies at the heart of Obama’s health care law, the Affordable Care Act, and affirming same-sex couples’ right to marry. All this while Obama took several opportunities to directly address the nation’s racial tensions, closing out the week by singing “Amazing Grace” on national television.

GM all – I just watched President Obama & Sir David Attenborough – not sure what is was called elsewhere – down under it was “When Attenborough met Obama”. How wonderful they both were – not sure which one of them enjoyed the meeting the most. The President’s concern re climate change came through – Sir David seemed much more hopeful that people would change – not sure he understands what the business world, the GOP and the Oz PM are trying to do.

    45 minutes well spent

Agree — watched in the wee hours this morning, courtesy of Carol Mae.

I’m a naturalist by heart, and if I had better resolve in my youth, that’s the career path I would have taken.

Loved Sir Attenborough’s comment at the end, when he said “Americans seem to like birthdays,” as he was feted multiple times on his 89th BD.

The evolution of his programs, from the 1950s to present day is astounding. What a treasure he is for adapting to computer-enhanced graphics so well — the photography in his programs have always been remarkable.

        June 30, 2015 at 10:52 am

I was hooked at the beginning when Sir David said he had never before met a US President – shows which President cares about the environment – then they were both saying what an honor it was to meet the other – two engaging guys 🙂

          June 30, 2015 at 11:00 am

Agree, it was like being invited to a 21st century salon — with blinding lights and camera equipment, LOL.

The population question is one I hope is resolved, but it’s troubling that so many (less educated, more isolated) Americans triumph the Duggars (19 children is tantamount to child abuse, IMHO) and the evangelicals who go to Africa and encourage more children (i.e., more women barefoot and pregnant), when Sir Attenborough is so definitely alarmed at Kenya’s birth rate.

    • June 30, 2015 at 11:20 am

It gave us insight into Pres. Obama too. His Mother sat by the beach with coral reefs when she was pregnant with him. She thought that was why he was calm. ❤️ He grew up watching Sir David Attenborough. Sir David was very complimentary of the President. He sounded like any of us would after meeting him.
P.S. VC might not want to spend her birthday at the White House! Lots of CAKE! 😉
The photography at the end was awe inspiring.

This should be replicated across the country

    ……………………..

IDignity was created to assist the disadvantaged in Central Florida to navigate the complexities of obtaining their personal identification, such as birth certificates, Florida ID cards and Social Security cards. These documents are essential to fully participate in our current day society. The need for such a program was recognized by members of five downtown churches who were unable to find a resource that provided such a service. This group developed a viable solution after meeting for a six month period of exhaustive research and interviews. A significant part of this solution was to expand the process that was developed at Project Homeless Connect (PHC), an annual service fair which utilizes various agencies working together symbiotically. The agencies that IDignity events host are: the Florida Division of Drivers License, Orange County Health Department (birth certificates), Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, legal counsel and others. IDignity provides these services more often and also incorporates the particularly difficult task of obtaining out-of-state birth certificates.

The overwhelming demand for these services at the PHC events had shown that more needed to be done. IDignity’s monthly events provided a viable solution. The acquiring of identification continues to become more difficult as stricter regulations are regularly being implemented for Homeland Security. Since May of 2008 IDignity has hosted monthly events at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission in downtown Orlando. Each event provides service to about 225 clients and often has to turn others away due to capacity and funding limitations. Clients are individually welcomed to the event and treated with respect and compassion throughout the process. In order to implement this program, it requires the assistance of nearly 100 dedicated volunteers and the professional staff of the various agencies. Volunteers will serve in a wide variety of roles including: introducing the process to clients, filling out forms for clients, assisting agencies or shepherding clients through the process. Interestingly, most of the volunteers leave these events feeling that they have been served themselves and regularly return with a desire to do more. Although each client’s case is unique, on average it takes about four hours of volunteer time and $125 to assist an individual in obtaining their essential identification documents. IDignity depends on the generous investment of time and resources by the local community in order to fulfill its crucial mission of restoring dignity and hope by providing identification

Wonderful program, rikyrah. More states need to know about it and try to replicate it. Every time there’s a new requirement placed on people for IDs or papers, there are whole groups who have trouble processing the paperwork, getting through the red tape, paying the fees. It’s overwhelming for many and they just give up. Helping people through this process is a vital service.

I have always said that I have no problem with photo ID for voting. I have a serious problem with it being difficult to obtain the documents and to get the ID. Fine – ask for photo ID but the STATES should have a sign-up at every doctor’s office, pharmacy, grocery story, assisted living, hospital, etc. Every effing street corner. It should be free (ALL documentation) and easy to obtain. ALL voters should be contacted personally if they cannot leave their homes due to illness or old age. You shouldn’t have to lose more than 15 minutes to get the process in motion.

This is wonderful that there are volunteers to do this. It should be unconstitutional that the government does not provide these services to all citizens.

      • 74 amk for obama
        June 30, 2015 at 10:18 am

Voter ID is a must in all our elections and various other government schemes. And as you say, it is provided for free for all. The election commission even has its state units do a door-to-door canvas often for issuing these id’s.

        • 75 57andfemale
          June 30, 2015 at 10:36 am

Precisely my point, amk. It’s the fact that people have to take days off of work to go to a facility that can be hundreds of miles away. They also have to pay for the documentation. It’s a poll tax, it is meant to keep the less advantaged members of society from voting. Even with this effing SCOTUS, it’s reasonable to revisit their gutting of the VRA because the effect has been to return to the Jim Crow era.

I have voted since forever with no ID – I simply have (had) to state name/address. We have a very good enrollment system and electoral rolls are kept up to date. Our state government decided it would copy this law from the US & I see absolutely no reason for it whatsoever.

All you needed in Chicago was a matching signature and if you were new to the district, a copy of a utility bill showing your name and address. This is a travesty, what is happening to voting rights in this country.

Matti Makkonen, who helped to launch the worldwide sensation of texting, has died at the age of 63 after an illness.

Makkonen became known as the father of SMS after developing the idea of sending messages via mobile networks.

Despite the nickname, he was often quick to point out that he did not invent the technology single-handedly.

In 2012, he told BBC News – in an SMS interview – that he believed texting in some form would be around “forever”.

Speaking on the 20th anniversary of the first text message, Makkonen said that he considered the development of SMS a joint effort and that it was Nokia who helped to popularise the service.

“The real launch of the service, as I see it, was when Nokia introduced the first phone that enabled easy writing of messages (Nokia 2010 in 1994),” he said.

Rand Paul meets with Cliven Bundy on Nevada campaign stop
    Jun. 29, 2015 11:55 PM EDT58

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul met with southern Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy on Monday during a question-and-answer session in the town of Mesquite with about 50 supporters and activists interested in land rights.

The meeting northeast of Las Vegas was part of a statewide tour with stops from Las Vegas to rural Elko.

Not only UH HUH – but really! Meeting with criminals who attack government employees while stealing the use of government land. Seems the only votes the GOP pretenders want is from white males. Might work for the primaries – not so good for the main show.

Good morning everyone. Well, when you don’t get the answer you want….

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/06/30/us-usa-court-redistricting-idUSKCN0PA1QX20150630

The new case focuses on state districts drawn for the 2012 election based on 2010 census numbers. The challengers say the new districts favored Democrats over Republicans by overpopulating Republican-leaning districts. They say the commission violated the U.S. Constitution’s principle of “one person, one vote.”

This was ALWAYS because they felt that Dems were favored more with this redistricting map! They said that from the git go! smdh

Recent history has shown us that the one more week strategy has worked very well.
One week headlines were screaming that dems turned on PBO.
Next week, TPA and TAA signed and on their way.

      July 7? No worries.

Perfect! Let’s do this on a national scale, why don’t we?? 🙂 Loser.

The economic recovery he promised has turned into a cascade of ugly credit downgrades and anemic job growth. The state pension he vowed to fix has descended into a morass of missed payments and lawsuits. The administration he pledged would be a paragon of ethics has instead conspired to mire an entire town in traffic and the governor’s office in scandal.

But today, a staggering 55 percent of Republican primary voters say that they cannot envision voting for Mr. Christie, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal Poll, a remarkable deficit from which to embark on a national campaign. The only candidate less palatable: Donald J. Trump, the bombastic developer-turned-reality television star.

All this crowding of the GOP field is to protect and conceal their desired candidate (Jeb Bush). The Klowns are used as distractions to divert public and media attention away from the flagrant flaws of their “golden” child. They did the same thing with Romney in 2012. And he actually outperformed John McCain. With no Barack Obama in the Dem field, we had better be prepared…

Martin O’Malley was going to be the friendly fire distraction for HRC, but out of left field (literally, Left field) came the messy-haired distraction—-what’s his name again?

None of them will know what hit them when the natural heir to The Obama Coalition takes the stage.

Non-psychopathic people would be embarrassed to ruin a state, and then announce that they want the chance to do the same damage on the national stage. What’s wrong with these people? Do they really think Americans are that stupid?

Good morning/day/eve to all! Chips, NW, BTs, I need you help, I don’t know how to get pictures or tweets to post. I just read the most beautiful tweet from the US Embassy in Maputo w/ a sweet picture of John Kerry & Teresa Heinz Kerry. Teresa was born in Mozambique.

If what I try to post doesn’t work, following (below) is the text, translated from Portuguese to English, by Google — so excuses.

    .
John Kerry, the Secretary Of U.S. Department of State, whose wife was born in Mozambique, congratulated yesterday to all mozambicans by the 40. th anniversary of the independence of Mozambique. – http://go.usa.gov/3vQHB

‘ in the name of President Obama and the American people, I send my congratulations to all the Mozambicans for the celebration of the 40 th anniversary of your independence on June 25.

Your country is truly special to me, because it is the homeland of my wife, Teresa. Our house resonates with the sound of Portuguese, as well as the wistful memories of Teresa, of walks by the woods with his father, a doctor, when I was going to take care of patients. We have a map of Mozambique hanging in our house.

This year is a milestone in relations United States of America-Mozambique. In the last 40 years our relationship grew and reflects our shared commitment to achieve a lasting peace, progress and common prosperity for all.

Together, we entered into a partnership to strengthen democracy, promote trade and investment, improve the health, expand the opportunities of education, to preserve the environment and the fight against transnational crime.

On this day of celebration, Teresa joins me in wishing to their fellow countrymen Mozambicans, peace, happiness and prosperity for the year ahead “. – Secretary Kerry

AH YES! The sanctity of life..LET’S GET BACK TO KILLIN’ PEOPLE!

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/florida-oklahome-death-penalty-executions-lethal-injection

Oklahoma and Florida moved quickly to resume lethal injections after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the use of midazolam, a sedative that has been used in several problematic executions.

Attorneys general in both states asked courts Monday to allow executions to proceed, just hours after the high court voted 5-4 in a case from Oklahoma that midazolam can be used in executions without violating the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.
