Carter and Clinton too often gave up when the opposition got too hot for them to handle while PBO stuck it out and did not let the noise of the media sway him. PBO knows what battles are important and which ones to do behind the scenes and spring it on the unsuspecting media.

I’m with you on this, Meta (+ MP, Dudette et al who’ve tried to draw attention to this)! I read it a while back (can’t remember who shared it ) and though it was long, it was a terrific read. It reaffirmed the awesome intelligence and resourcefulness of PBO. It showed again that he’s doing his job in every way possible while others were only showboating.

AND, it highlighted again PBO’s contention that you need to have a goal to be effective in politics/public service. He’s been living the template for this in every which way possible!

What these idiots don’t understand is that Obamacare is a life-saving miracle for millions of families who had no option available to them for preventive care, healthcare for their young adult children or themselves. The GOP screeching that they will “punish” SCOTUS by making them enroll in Obamacare just demonstrates that they really don’t understand how many people actually NEED Obamacare to stay alive or make the most of the lives and health that they have. That’s why they’ve spent the last several years trying to tear it down – because they just don’t get it. And it makes them even more pathetic – especially as people who get paid to represent the people of this country.

    GM, TOD ohana

I often think of how prophetic is the name that PBO’s Crow parents gave to him upon his adoption in 2007 which means: He who helps people across the land.” Service was the reason that he ran for office ( to do something rather than to be something as is the case of almost everyone else) and it has ever been his north star. He puts up with all of the lies, hate, stupidity, laziness, and racism because he knows that these are the ruts in the road that are designed to make the way forward so hard so that he will stop and turn away. But luckily for us he has that “spine of steel” that VP Joe mentioned years ago. That uncommon strength, determination and unrelenting focus that is needed to bring the visions of what this country can be to reality. I am so thankful to be alive, aware, and tuned-in ( mostly through the work of all who make this place possible) during the sea change of these incredible years with this one-of-a-kind president, Barack Hussein Obama.

    • June 26, 2015 at 10:14 am

I so remember that ceremony. I watched with tear-filled eyes. Such a momentous occasion during the campaign.

Who knew that Barack Obama would go on to become one of our greatest presidents of all time, far exceeding our expectations in such chaotic and challenging times. He stands alone in this honor.

Thank you, Ceb, for putting it so beautifully.

    From ScotusBlog

“It is now clear that the challenged laws burden the liberty of same-sex couples, and it must be further acknowledged that they abridge central precepts of equality . . . Especially against a long history of disapproval of their relationships, this denial to same-sex couples of the right to marry works a grave and continuing harm. The imposition of this disability on gays and lesbians serves to disrespect and subordinate them. And the Equal Protection Clause, like the Due Process Clause, prohibits this unjustified infringement of the fundamental right to marry.” That’s page 22.

    From the blog

“The Chief Justice is reading his dissent from the bench still. I have a brief summary of it below, but the basic gist is that he thinks that the democratic process should have worked this out on its own. The tone of the Chief’s dissent is very measured, and repeatedly urges the victors to celebrate, despite his disagreement with the Court being the one to make the decision.”

    • 94 0388jojothecat
      June 26, 2015 at 10:33 am

The democratic process would never worked this out on it’s own and he knows it. The southern states in the so-called Bible belt would never have allowed it to happen in their states and it would have wound up on the SCOTUS door steps just like interracial marriage.

This is a huge victory for the United States of America…..now some sound Immigration policies.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across the United States.

In a historic 5-4 decision, Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority ruled that marriage is a constitutional right for all.

“No union is more profound than marriage,” he wrote, backed by the court’s four more liberal justices.

It is unclear how soon marriage licences will be issued in states where gay unions were previously prohibited.

Before the ruling on Thursday, gay couples could marry in 37 states in addition to Washington DC.

Loud cheers erupted outside the court after the ruling was announced where scores of people camped out for hours awaiting news on Friday.

We have the second opinion. Johnson v US – 8/1 – Alito dissents

Court holds that imposing an increased sentence under the Armed Career Criminal Act’s residual clause violates due process.

    ACCA residual clause is unconstitutional!

This case was originally argued last fall. It arises out of the Armed Career Criminal Act, which imposes a mandatory minimum sentence of fifteen years on a federal firearms offender who has three convictions for a โ€œviolent felony.โ€ The question before the Court was whether possession of a sawed-off shotgun constitutes a violent felony. After oral argument, the Court ordered new briefing and re-argument on a second question: whether the part of the ACCA (known as the โ€œresidual clauseโ€) which outlines what kinds of crimes should be treated as violent felonies is unconstitutionally vague.

Today the Supreme Court ruled, 6-3, that the ACCAโ€™s residual clause is indeed unconstitutionally vague. This means that Johnsonโ€™s enhanced sentence will be vacated.

From the majority opinion, addressing the role of history in the constitutional analysis: โ€œThe nature of injustice is that we may not always see it in our own times. The generations that wrote and ratified the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment did not presume to know the extent of freedom in all of its dimensions, and so they entrusted to future generations a character protecting the right of all persons to enjoy liberty as we learn its meaning.โ€

Marva Collins, renowned educator, dies at 78
    By Tony Briscoe
    Chicago Tribune

A pioneer in education, Marva Collins gained wide acclaim for her novel approach to teaching at a West Side school she started.

Mrs. Collins, 78, who founded Westside Preparatory School in Garfield Park in 1975 and whose life became the focus of a made-for-TV movie, died of natural causes on Wednesday while in hospice care in Beaufort County, S.C., according to her son Patrick Collins.

“She gave it her professional all, her very best,” he said.

Born Marva Knight in Alabama, Mrs. Collins graduated from Clark College, now Clark Atlanta University.

She moved to Chicago after graduation and took a position as a medical secretary. She later became a teacher in Chicago Public Schools, teaching second grade at Delano Elementary School on the Near West Side, her son said.

She became frustrated with the classroom approach at the public school, her son said.

“It was more playtime, less learning,” he said. “So she cashed in her $5,000 teacher pension, moved her tenants out and taught out of the second floor of her own home. That was her vision.”

I was just thinking about Ms. Collins the other day how she started that private school because she wanted to teach and how she took on kids that were considered unteachable. I remember the made-for-tv-movie where Cicely Tyson played her and I think it was Morgan Freeman who played her husband. I hope they run it this week as a memorial to a great lady.
