          ============
          They really should not mess with President Obama ….
          ============
          “The TAA is expected to move quickly. Senate Republicans have planned a procedural vote on the bill Wednesday as part of a larger package that includes the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a popular measure extending trade preferences to African nations. That sets the stage for final passage in both the Senate and House on Thursday.

          Some Democrats on Wednesday decried the GOP’s plan to attach TAA to AGOA, warning that it sets a bad precedent that could sink the otherwise noncontroversial Africa preferences bill in future debates.

          Still, even those voices said their hands are tied, and that they intend to vote in favor of the TAA/AGOA package.

          “It’s disgusting that they were attached, but we have to play the hand we were dealt and I’m going to vote for it,” Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said after Wednesday’s caucus meeting.

          “Right now the TPA is passing the Senate and heading to the president’s desk — I suspect that he will sign it very soon — and how are we going to look if we defeat TAA and AGOA?” Butterfield added.”

          ibid.

          I think she was trying to get them to pass the Highway Bill . I think the Highway Bill was brought forward.

        • June 24, 2015 at 2:51 pm

          Well, she is dead set against TPP. She is my rep and I get regular emails from her. She sees herself as fighting for workers rights, etc, etc. She plainly doesn’t support the President on this. Yes, now she’s backed into a corner and will vote for TAA but it has been her intention to see TPP go down. I don’t think it’s a case of splitting hairs so she would get more in the bill, although it does so happen that they may advance the Highway Bill. But it was set to expire anyway and would have come up in the normal course of things.

          SO, I just reiterate my dismay and confusion over her tactics.

          • June 24, 2015 at 4:45 pm

            TAA gives funds for training workers who will be affected. Dems are for it. “Problem” for them was that last time, TAA was attached to TPA and they didn’t want to say yes to TPA. Now that TPA has passed without them and that TAA isn’t attached to it anymore, they have to vote for it.

            That being said, TPA, TPP is just about fast track authority. The negotiations for the trade deal are not completed; when it’s done, Congress will have plenty of time to debate it. I’m very eager to see this debate. I suspect that many analysts will look at the text and wonder what the hysteria was all about.

    Good Afternoon TOD Family.

    I asking for your prayers today. The grandson of good friends of ours committed suicide on Monday. He was 16 years old. We found out last night and needless to say we are reeling. They took Jason in about a year ago because he needed the stability. He seemed to be happy and thriving. They provided that stability and love in droves and of course, as is always the case, they are tortured by what they DIDN’T do or didn’t see. They’re good people who did the right thing. They’re devastated and my heart is breaking for them.

    Thank you Family.

      What a terrible, terrible tragedy, Dakota. How much anguish must that young man have been in to commit suicide at 16. My heart aches for your friends and I’m sure they did everything they could to prevent this. Hope they find some peace knowing that they gave him love and stability for the last year.

    Iowa is granting permits to acquire or carry guns in public to people who are legally or completely blind.

    LOL 🙂 http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/number-of-g-o-p-candidates-now-thirteen-says-c-d-c

    Number of G.O.P. Candidates Now Thirteen, Says C.D.C.

    “It might have been misplaced optimism on our part, but we had started to believe that this thing had been contained,” said the C.D.C. spokesman Dr. Harland Dorrinson. “Regrettably, it has not.”

    While scientists disagree about how running for President spreads from person to person, most epidemiologists believe that a candidacy needs an environment rich in narcissism and delusion—plus a host to feed on, ideally a sociopathic billionaire.

    We’ve all been prepped that the Supreme Court will issue important rulings in the next few days about Obamacare and gay marriage. What we haven’t heard as much about is that they will also rule on the case of Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs v. The Inclusive Communities Project. That case hinges on a long-established legal concept: disparate impact, which holds that cases of discrimination can be made on the basis of impact and need not prove intent.

    Chief Justice Roberts has long made his thoughts clear about his desire to get rid of disparate impact as a standard. And we can be fairly certain that he will be joined by Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito. So the outcome of this case clearly rests on the vote of Justice Kennedy. A ruling against disparate impact will set our progress on civil rights in this country back decades because it will mean that cases of racial distrcrimination require proof of intent.

      June 24, 2015 at 6:29 pm

      Thanks for that pf – I’ve seen the list of outstanding cases and didn’t understand what this one was about. I would like to think the good guys would win this one – but the SCOTUS seems keen to tell the world that there is no racism in the USA. That the world does not believe them does not seem to be of concern
