In the same interview, Mr Obama lamented the influence that anti-gun-control lobbyists have on the US Congress, and how they prevented the enactment of stronger gun control legislation after the mass killing of school children in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.

“The grip of the NRA on Congress is extremely strong,” he said.

“I will tell you, right after Sandy Hook, Newtown, when 20 six-year-olds are gunned down, and Congress literally does nothing – yes, that’s the closest I came to feeling disgusted,” he said. “I was pretty disgusted.”

          🙂
I’m going to have some time next Tuesday between flights to hang out at SFO. It sure would be nice if I could see you. If not, maybe you could send me via Chipsticks your email address so I can give you my cell number and we can chat through the window 🙂

          • June 22, 2015 at 2:08 pm

              • June 22, 2015 at 2:20 pm

Do you have an idea around what time? I likely won’t be able to get out to SFO (it’s quite a distance from the city) but maybe we can chat by phone if I’m free at that time!

                  I land @12noon and don’t depart till @3pm. Torture!!!

                  • June 22, 2015 at 2:43 pm

Layovers are torture but SFO does have some nice eateries. It would be so fun to meet you there for a bite and a sip but it would take me over an hour to get there on public trans and then I would have to find you from the international terminal. I don’t think I’ll have enough time next Tuesday to do all that because I have a morning workshop. So let’s hook up by phone. I’ll ask Chips to give me your number or give you my number, whichever she is most comfortable with.

Next time, make your layover an OVERNIGHT one, TODer!!

I think jojo and I should make plans to have a road trip to SF and visit you – if for nothing more than to bring back some pastries 🙂

        NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) –
Charleston government and civil rights leaders came together Monday to call for the immediate removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the State House.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey were joined by State Sen. Marlon Kimpson, Rev. Joe Darby of the NAACP, and others in calling for action from state leaders during the 12 p.m. news conference at North Charleston City Hall.

“The time has come for the [Confederate] flag to be removed from the State House grounds,” Riley said.

He went on to say the Confederate flag should be preserved in a museum, not at the State House.

According to Kimpson, there is “a growing chorus” of South Carolina senators who are interested in seeing legislation passed to remove the Confederate flag before the current session ends.

The group announced a rally will be held at the State House Tuesday at 2 p.m., asking the South Carolina General Assembly to remove the Confederate Battle Flag from the grounds of the capitol.
Other officials at Monday’s news conference included Reverend Nelson B. Rivers III and Elder James Johnson of the National Action Network, State Representatives Wendell Gilliard and Leon Stavrinakis, and J. Elliott Summey of the Charleston County Council.

“Today, the governor will have a press conference. And I can stand here like these ladies and gentleman who have been a part of this movement in the state of South Carolina and had to endure a lot, I can stand here today and tell you, she is going to change her mind,” Rep. Wendell said. “She is going to change her mind and that flag will come down.

“And when the flag comes down, then and only then it will be a great day in the state of South Carolina.”

Governor Nikki Haley is scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m. in Columbia.

Sources close to the situation say Haley is formulating a plan with State House leaders to remove the Confederate flag from the State House grounds.

There Are None So Blind As Those Who Will Not See:
      • According to the ‘Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings’ this proverb has been traced back to 1546 (John Heywood), and resembles the Biblical verse Jeremiah 5:21 (‘Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not’). In 1738 it was used by Jonathan Swift in his ‘Polite Conversation’ and is first attested in the United States in the 1713 ‘Works of Thomas Chalkley’.

The full saying is: ‘There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know’

There was a question by one WHPCer about the idiotic tweet from an Israeli Minister’s wife. Josh said that with 140 Twitter Characters people say things when they want to sale books. He said that they don’t spend their time worrying about such things.

    • June 22, 2015 at 2:23 pm

I think the book sales thing was in reference to Michael Oren. Josh said: “I think it’s clearly just a case of another politician trying to sell books.”

A new way to lead from behind

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————————–

But if these early reports are accurate, the fun part will be watching GOP presidential candidates, each of whom has spent days dodging simple questions, quickly endorse the plan put forward by South Carolina policymakers. If/when Haley and state House leaders take the leap, it’s a safe bet Republican White House hopefuls will soon follow.

It’s putting a nice, new spin on “leading from behind.”

OT, because we can use a little laugh…

Grandma and Grandpa were visiting their kids overnight.

When Grandpa found a bottle of Viagra in his son’s medicine cabinet, he asked about using one of the pills.
The son said, “I don’t think you should take one Dad; they’re very strong and very expensive.”
“How much?” asked Grandpa. “$10. a pill,” answered the son.
“I don’t care,” said Grandpa, “I’d still like to try one, and before we leave in the morning,
I’ll put the money under the pillow.”
Later the next morning, the son found $110 under the pillow.
He called Grandpa and said, “I told you each pill was $10, not $110.
“I know,” said Grandpa. “The hundred is from Grandma!”

That flag needs to go immediately, not in August.

It needs to go BEFORE Rev/Sen. Pinckney is taken to the Capitol to lay in State.

It should NOT be there with his body laying 30 yards away. !

Rafael Cruz, Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) father, on Saturday said that northeastern Jews and Catholics put their allegiance to the Democratic Party ahead of their religion.

“Unfortunately, in the northeast, the Jews are Democrats first and Jews second,” he said at an event on Saturday held by the Palm Beach County Tea Party. “This is what has happened to a great many in the Catholic church. They are Democrats first and Catholics second.”

Rafael Cruz said that Americans “need to put principle above tradition.”

“There are people voting Democrat because, ‘My grandfather or my father voted Democrat.’ Let me tell you something. The Democratic party today is not the Democratic party of John Kennedy. John Kennedy would be a Republican today,” he said.

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/rafael-cruz-jews-catholics-democrats

Cruz and his son are Dominionists

Dominionism : is a political and religious philosophy that seeks to make the United States government a Christian theocracy.

“On Saturday, South Carolina State Rep. Doug Brannon told the AP he also believes the flag should come down.

Brannon, a Republican, called the flag a symbol of both hate and “a symbol of pride in one’s hatred.” He added that the shooting in Charleston prompted him to finally speak up about the issue.

“I just didn’t have the balls for five years to do it,” he explained. “But when my friend was assassinated for being nothing more than a black man, I decided it was time for that thing to be off the Statehouse grounds.”

If only the white men in Congress had the “balls” to do gun control after those 20 six year olds were gunned down. I give a lot of props to SC Republicans and the white people who came out Sunday to force the narrative about that racist flag. Many of their white male constituents love that flag and I don’t know how much push back they are getting but it must not be much.
