A Mass for the Dead

****

For the dead, we say, “Amen”. And for the living.
There are too many dead, and the living are riven.

Every day, a new horror, a new loss of innocence,
And the night-dimmed tide swallows us.

There is no innocence; this is a fallen world,
And men of evil revel in destruction.

When is it enough? It’s never enough.
Violence has an army of reasons,

And peace seems to be an idea
Honored more in the breach than the observance.

This is not your heritage; it is evil.
This is not your freedom; it is slavery.

Do that which you would have done unto you;
Flee from that which is harmful to all.

The answer is there, to be teased out
Of life, hard life, the only life we have.

Remember the dead, for they speak from the earth,
Pleading, “Let us not be in vain.”

Good morning TOD. All I can think of the last couple of days is you reap what you sow. The Rs have preached hatred and violence for years against this President and every non-white person in this country. This is the result. I did not see one commentator who will acknowledge this fact. The morning of this tragedy, Trump specifically talked about the “criminals” here from Mexico. His language was nearly identical to that of the shooter. Coincidence? I think not. Until the rhetoric changes the violence will continue. My heart is heavy.

      GM Foxfire.

Few believe that Trump is a serious candidate, including Trump himself:

Also, anyone with eyes knows that Trump is all wet about “Mexicans.”

Here in SoCal, the hardest working (in the literal, back-breaking sense) are many people whose first language is Spanish. The “Mexican criminals” exist only in RWNJ minds — but if it’s Spanish-speaking criminals they want, deny children of Latin American immigrants free Community College, in-state 4-year college tuition, driver’s licenses, enlistment in US military, etc. — unemployable youth are surely more likely to be involved in criminal/gang activities than those who can get a job, enroll in college, drive legally, etc.

LL, thank you for this beautiful post. We need to remember the people who were murdered–not simply ‘victims,’ but real, flesh and blood human beings with families who loved them, feelings, faith, memories, history. In one act of ferocious hatred, one evil creature destroyed all that was living and wonderful about these human beings. He took away everything they had and left us all bereft. We need to remember and never forget.

Nikki Haley is stupid, vapid, utterly insensitive and morally repulsive. That she is still governor of SC tells you all you need to know about that state.

    • 13 vcprezofan2
      June 19, 2015 at 10:21 am

So, I’m not missing Haley’s agenda? I was coming down to post my observation from her ’emotional’ presser, only to see that you have issues with the dog whistles in her speeches too. 😦
      —————————————————

Has anyone else noticed Haley’s wording in that presser was somewhat ‘off’? I’m not taking issue with the ‘tears’ (which *I* found questionable). Look at it for yourself and tell me some of her wording doesn’t strike you as odd.
Here are some of the sections that had me going ‘Huh? What?’
“I want you to know the outpouring of emotion from across this country has been overwhelming. From presidential *candidates* to ………’ [@approx 1:03]
Her top line was telling for me. She starts with the candidates – no mention of the president?
‘We are so thankful for everybody that came together that *refused to allow this to happen* [~ 1:52] Huh?
She has never in her law enforcement people and others involved…. *such passion and personal willingness to make sure they brought this person **home**. [~ 2:00] 😕

        • 15 vcprezofan2
          June 19, 2015 at 10:58 am

It is, and though she did mention the 9 families more than once, she left me with the feeling she identified more with the shooter and was impressed so many worked together to bring him ‘home’ (I could almost add ‘safely’. ) Makes me wonder at the kind of coronation he will get. After all, wasn’t he sporting a bullet-proof vest in his custody pic. Wonder if that was his own?

          • 16 99ts
            June 19, 2015 at 11:02 am

No – the police gave him that for protection – white privilege in action

              June 19, 2015 at 11:13 am

I don’t know, TS, but I really would hate to think they did. I can’t remember them providing that kind of protection for any suspected felon, yet I can’t imagine him running with a bullet proof vest on as that would surely draw attention to himself. Also, it makes me wonder about these killer types who are angry for blood, but not their own.

              • 20 99ts
                June 19, 2015 at 12:05 pm

Pretty sure it was given him by the police – I can’t find a picture where I can read the writing on it – but he has the same vest when arrested and when in prison gear on his way back to SC – so I’d think it is police provided.

                • 21 vcprezofan2
                  June 19, 2015 at 12:08 pm

I’m biased I know, TS, but I’ve been getting this sense that Haley, and SC law enforcement are somewhat protective of this guy. The idea of her being eager to bring him *home* (and them doing that with him in protective gear) struck a negative chord with me.

      June 19, 2015 at 9:58 am

Jackie, I shared similar thoughts on the last post. I’m a few years older than you are and had high hopes in my youth that things would change. That we are still going through the same racist nightmares in 2015 as we did in my youth just sears my soul.

      • 30 FoxfireTX
        June 19, 2015 at 10:08 am

Actually, I think in some ways it is worse. The overt racism was out there and could be dealt with, while the hateful rhetoric and institutional racism of today is more difficult to deal with because of its subtlety. It allows the Rs to say that racism is dead when in fact it is rampant. And we simply did not have the guns in the past that we do today. It makes it difficult to remain hopeful that it will ever change. The same is true with sexism. I simply cannot believe where we are as country today compared to the 60’s and 70’s. We’ve lost so much through the state legislatures.

Thank you LL for giving us a snapshot of the nine beautiful lives that were taken too soon. Even the grandmother in her eighties had many many many more years to enjoy life doing what she loved, going to church and bible study. I read on another site, don’t know if it is true, but it said the monster that murdered them almost did not do it because they treated him so nice. I truly believe someone put him up to this. This was an execution of the Rev/Senator and mass murder carried out by one of their racist soldiers.

Coming home yesterday, I heard Karen Hunter going on and on about “This President could do more, blah, blah, blah.” Over and over….kept saying same thing. Woman who was co-hosting with her kept agreeing. By the time I got home, I was yelling at the radio. I know, should have turned off or changed channel so my fault. I control my actions, right? Anyway, I was furious!!

Karen always seems so angry and honestly rather ignorant. She reminds me of a black version of Chris Matthews. She is not very informed at all!

        • June 19, 2015 at 11:16 am

Michael Eric Dyson was on Twitter talking about what PBO should have said. He can be a real ahole. Someone called him an anklebitter. Someone else reminded him or rather informed him that Nixon almost caused the mass murderer, Manson, to walk because of statements Nixon made in public prior to the trial. POTUS knows exactly what he should or should not say. Nothing PBO does or says is ever good enough for these wannabe so-called intellectuals.

Thank you LL – what a wonderful collection of people they were. I’m not of a religious bent, although I have many past links to my church – but until she became ill (a month before she died) my mother attended bible class every week for years. She rarely went to a church service but always went to bible study. The thought that something like this could happen to such a group has never before entered my thoughts.

I am still somewhat reeling from reports that the shooter told the police he “wanted to start a race war”. The RW media seems to be for the most part, ignoring his words.

    Good Morning TOD

This week has reminded me of a scene in the movie “42”. The Jackie Robinson Story was so telling but the one scene that will forever stay with me is when the white father and son are at the ball game and the father is yelling the n-word at Jackie when he is at the plate. The son looks confused that his father is doing this but after a few minutes of watching his father he chimes in and starts calling Jackie the n-word as well. In that moment he taught that young, innocent child to be a racist. It makes you wonder when this killer was taught to be the racist that he has grown into today…

Yes, THEY HAVE A NAME: and they were all beautiful people who put their indelible mark on this world. They will be missed & mourned but never forgotten. They have their place in history. Just like Addie, Denise, Carole and Cynthia the four school age girls in Alabama who lost their lives in that horrendous bombing. No one remembers their killers just as we won’t remember this one but years from now we will forever remember Cynthia Hurd, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Susie Jackson, Rev. DePayne Middleton, Rev. Daniel Simmons, Ethel Lee Lance, Myra Thompson,Tywanza Sanders and Rev Clementa Pinckney. The nine lives that were taken in 2015 because someone was taught to feel threatened by the color of their skin.

IMHO, Lindsey Graham is the sanest of the GOP lot, but would not vote for him because he’s all-in for “bomb-bomb-Iran” as his BFF McCain says.

    • June 19, 2015 at 11:44 am

And yes Graham and all those Republican politicians who would not speak up against the racists hate is just as much to blame. The last six years alot of them join in with the racists hate or they remain silent and that’s just as bad. They allow themselves to be taken over by those extreme radical right wing racists.

Lindsey Graham is NO friend to the AA community. The only thing that made him cry was that this was done in a church, that these people welcomed this monster into a place where EVERYONE (even black folks) should be safe from senseless gun violence. If these people were gunned down shopping or walking there would not be the same outpouring of shame from some of the people in SC. These are the same people who feel it is OK to prevent AA’s from voting. This is my opinion, I may be wrong but I am so sick and tired of these Southerners wanting to call this a “Christian Nation, built on Christian Values” when the hold a Bible in one hand and a gun in another. I am waiting for the NRA to say if only Jesus had a gun he would not have been killed on the cross, that is how sick these people are.
