Good Morning TOD family and Chips.

Sue I know how you feel. I’ve gone from shocked, to anger, to frustrated just like PBO. We need to do something so that these murders are not our new normal.

Other than PBO, JB & Castro, has any of those boneless wonders called dems called out the murders at Charleston for what it is?

    Nancy? Harry? Hillary?

Hi, TODobots! It’s Friday, and I, like almost everyone here, am hoping for a respite from the hatred, and the pain, and the wishy-washy( or no) response from those who ought to be showing leadership and resolution.

Chips, this is so absolutely spot on I want to give this man an award for nailing it. The hypocrisy and denial run so deep, it’s like a foul swamp.

      • June 19, 2015 at 8:10 am

It’s perfect Jackie, it’s like all that ‘taking our country back’ stuff from supposedly respectable Republicans, such vile code words – exactly what Roof was trying to do when he walked in to that church.

Morning, Chips! Thank you so much for your commitment in keeping us in touch with the reality around us, for this space, and for the moments of light that you reveal to strengthen and motivate.

Thanks too to NerdyW, Lib-L for their continued input. All that you all do is truly appreciated.

Hats off too to fellow TODobots! Sometimes, even when you have nothing to add, just knowing you are not alone in the face of unreasoning hatred makes the facing of it a wee bit less traumatic.

Powerful Photo! Good Morning Chips and TOD family. I am thankful we have this home to come here at TOD. I wish you all the best weekend you can have with such heavy hearts. Not sure how much more of this we can take. The one lady was 87 and I bet she had spent every Sunday and Wednesday night in a church since the day she was born. To live that long, only to be murdered by a coward who’s heart was black with HATE. It has to end! Remember: Racism has always been terrorism.

Morning all. Like many others here at TOD, I’ve had trouble controlling my rage at what happened in SC and the faux obliviousness of those who claim they can’t possibly understand what could have caused such violence. I’m angry because nothing has changed in the many decades of history that I have witnessed in this country. Oh, the open racism has gone underground in some areas of the country and the explicit language and the images are no longer acceptable in polite circles. But the racist feelings and impulses remain and they are an ongoing blight on the American soul. In the US, we put possession of a metal weapon of destruction above the sanctity of human life and we systematically undervalue, mistreat and actively endanger a segment of our population because of the color of their skin. That’s the reality. We can delude ourselves that things have gotten better, but the treatment of our President, the systematic injustice shown toward African Americans by our nation’s law enforcement entities and the persistence of ugly, racist symbols in large areas of our country (not just the south) tell us that our delusions are wrong. So, yes, I’m angry. The world that my generation worked so hard to change, the enlightened understanding in which we tried to raise our children– seems at this point to have not advanced us very far down the road to justice.

Shooters of color are called ‘terrorists’ and ‘thugs.’ Why are white shooters called ‘mentally ill’? http://wapo.st/1FqLGBv

googled white terrorists, this one came on top.

juan cole in 2012. valid today.

Top Ten differences between White Terrorists and Others.

      1. White terrorists are called “gunmen.” What does that even mean? A person with a gun? Wouldn’t that be, like, everyone in the US? Other terrorists are called, like, “terrorists.”

      2. White terrorists are “troubled loners.” Other terrorists are always suspected of being part of a global plot, even when they are obviously troubled loners.

      3. Doing a study on the danger of white terrorists at the Department of Homeland Security will get you sidelined by angry white Congressmen. Doing studies on other kinds of terrorists is a guaranteed promotion.

      4. The family of a white terrorist is interviewed, weeping as they wonder where he went wrong. The families of other terrorists are almost never interviewed.

      5. White terrorists are part of a “fringe.” Other terrorists are apparently mainstream.

      6. White terrorists are random events, like tornadoes. Other terrorists are long-running conspiracies.

      7. White terrorists are never called “white.” But other terrorists are given ethnic affiliations.

      8. Nobody thinks white terrorists are typical of white people. But other terrorists are considered paragons of their societies.

      9. White terrorists are alcoholics, addicts or mentally ill. Other terrorists are apparently clean-living and perfectly sane.

      10. There is nothing you can do about white terrorists. Gun control won’t stop them. No policy you could make, no government program, could possibly have an impact on them. But hundreds of billions of dollars must be spent on police and on the Department of Defense, and on TSA, which must virtually strip search 60 million people a year, to deal with other terrorists.

By continuing to fly the symbol of racism on the state house, South Carolina is expressing its complicity with the murdering creature who destroyed nine lives. We are not fooled by those who fly the hate flag. They’re proud of their racism and want the world to know it.

    Good morning everyone.
I just watched Jon Stewart and he has our current realty exactly right. If you haven’t taken the time, the clip is only 5 minutes long.

Charleston is about racism and hate.
Pundits and politicos who are making it about something else ( guns, metal health) are the Problem. LIARS and enablers of the fucked-up system.

As Jon says, it is impossible to find nuance in this massacre. African-Americans in SC drive to work on roads named for Confederate Generals and if they work in public buildings they see the Confederate Flag up top.

See you all in a few days or a few weeks or a few months. I need some time.

I totally understand your need, Vicki. Sometimes it all becomes too much and we have to re-center ourselves or we spin out of control. I’ve been trying very hard to control my anger in the last 24 hours.

We were dragged to America against our will. We’ve been mentally & physically abused & killed ever since. When do we get to take some time from the abuse & reality?

    • June 19, 2015 at 10:08 am

Vichi, guns are ALSO the problem. The difference between a racist young man in Europe or Canada and a racist young man in the USA: the young american can wake up one morning, go the store next door and buy a gun.

I don’t want to diminish the harsh reality of racism in America. Far from it. What I’m saying is if at least racists didn’t have an easy access to gun, some tragedies could be avoided.

We can agree that racism and guns are a deadly combination…

Charleston, Dylann Roof and the racism of millennials
By Karen Attiah June 18 at 6:21 PM

America should be shaken to its very core by what happened in Charleston.

The gruesome massacre of nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a historically black church in Charleston, S.C., may amount to the worst racially motivated terror attack of our generation and a deeply violent reminder that racism and white supremacy continue to course through America’s veins. One cannot help but draw comparisons to the firebombing of a black church in Birmingham, Ala., almost 52 years ago.

The shooting suspect in Charleston has been identified as Dylann Roof, a white 21-year-old. He was arrested (peacefully, one should add) at a traffic stop. Many will argue about what words we will use to describe Roof, whether he should be described as a mentally disturbed kid (a description rarely applied when the alleged perpetrator isn’t a white male) or a rational adult responsible for his alleged actions. His age matters, but not for the reasons you may think.

Roof, who was born in 1994, violently shatters one particularly entrenched myth that society holds about racism — that today’s millennials are more tolerant than their parents, and that racism will magically die out as previous generations pass on. We think that millennials should be lauded for aspiring to be “colorblind.” There is the belief that tolerant young people will intermarry and create a post-racial, brown society and that it will be “beautiful.”

But the truth is that the kids are not all right when it comes to racial equality. Studies have shown that millennials are just about as racist as previous generations:

When it comes to explicit prejudice against blacks, non-Hispanic white millennials are not much different than whites belonging to Generation X (born 1965-1980) or Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964). White millennials (using a definition of being born after 1980) express the least prejudice on 4 out of 5 measures in the survey, but only by a matter of 1 to 3 percentage points, not a meaningful difference. On work ethic, 31 percent of millennials rate blacks as lazier than whites, compared to 32 percent of Generation X whites and 35 percent of Baby Boomers.

    GM TODville.

Because of our stellar MSM and non-white supremacist US education, all Americans know this, right? (snark/sarcasm)

This explains so much. The white stars representing white supremacy were added to the “Southern Cross”…

    • June 19, 2015 at 10:25 am

This has to be retweeted everywhere, especially to everyone who works in media. There needs to be a campaign for banning the Confederate flag from any building associated with government and public institutions.

      At least,
