My neighbors upstairs are crazy freaks who do crazy things at all hours of the day and night.
Last night they woke up at 3am and decided to watch TV and bang pots and pans in their kitchen while they chased their huge dog around the apt. I think they’re drug addicts.
I could write a book. Sigh.

meta you and Mighty Pam are having the same problems with neighbors living above you. If you both like where you live the next upstairs unit that becomes available see if you can take it if it’s the same, i.e one bedroom, etc. Some landlords allow it because the unit you leave they can still raise the rent and you keep the same rent if possible. My mom lives in a low income senior hud building and whenever a unit becomes available and if the current tenants ask to relocate they are very accommodating. Doesn’t hurt to ask.
I’m rent-controlled. If I move anywhere else in this building to a unit of the same size, I face a tripling of rent. That’s why the landlord doesn’t care about fixing this. But I appreciate your suggestion!
So sorry to hear that. If you tried talking to them and asking the landlord to intervene and no help, the only thing you can do is retaliate in a way they would have to talk to you like cook something that is really stinky and the smell travels up to their unit, playing your television loud when they are sleeping. Do these people work or are they retired?
They’re young and it seems they just hang out.
I don’t want to match their behavior. I’ve done my best to try and let go of the aggravation because I really can’t fix it. It’s just the way it is. I love my city and I live in a great neighborhood, so I just do what I can to move on. Some days it’s harder than others!

I’m sorry you are going through this. But, your overhead neighbors and your landlord (for not effectively addressing the problem) are breaching your covenant of quiet enjoyment which under CA law every tenant has a right to the undisturbed use and enjoyment of his/her rental unit. I went through the same thing where I live (also rent-controlled) with same type of tenants. My “neighbors” were in the entertainment industry with odd hours, woke me every time they came home, had frequent visits from loud guests and partying that started typically at midnight and went to 4/5 am almost every day of each week, and every week. They might as well have been partying in my unit that’s how crystal clear the noise was overhead and through a shared wall. I have a deep, white hot hate for thumping bass music to this day because of those jack-holes.
When I notified my landlord in writing of this (frankly) almost NON STOP breach of my quiet enjoyment along with documentation of all of the tenants’ disturbance, all the times I had previously and politely brought this to their attention (4.5 years of sleep deprivation for me) which they failed to address, along with the potential amount of money they would have to pay me for being constructively evicted and damages for the health issues and distress I was experiencing, those tenants were moved out. I’ve had decent tenants since then. Don’t get me wrong, it took some effort with my landlords, they tried to blow me off initially, and boo hoo work it out amongst yourselves codswallop. But like you, I’ve lived where I’ve lived for a long time, love my neighborhood and have been a model long term tenant. I’ll be double god damned if I was going to be the one to leave. Enough was enough. It can be done.

We do have the same quiet ordinance here, with the requirement of right to reasonable quiet from 10pm to 8am. I’ve gone to the rent control board and there is even a volunteer attorney group there. But none of them would take my case. I’d documented a year’s worth of disturbance with details of each and every time I’d been woken up to my manager and shared it with them but to no avail. I guess they are swamped with more serious stuff like evictions, which are a real problem here because landlords are trying to get rid of long-standing tenants and it’s not legal. I do have to say it’s gotten better for me over the last fews months for some reason but still can be aggravating even if it’s just once or twice a week. It’s always so hard for me to believe that people can be so obnoxious and self-absorbed when you live in a shared community. My original landlord would never put up with this but these landlords own several buildings and just don’t care about it. I hope for peace and quiet for all of us who are in this situation.

A wise idea, if it can be done. I wouldn’t want to live up on that top floor for several reasons tho, jojo: hot in the summer, cold in the winter. No windows or doors to the outer world, so no fresh air ever, only what comes it through the ventilation system. The heating and cooling systems are all on the rooftop, running day and night. And the PeaPatch gardens are up above that floor, tho only in use from spring to fall, there is a lot of commotion with all of us planting and tending, watering and maintaining. Also, here we can only move during the window around our annual lease time, if there is another apartment available. I truly believe, from what I have seen, I was blessed to get the very nicest and best apartment in the complex, but the building itself is a cheap, and hastily built senior housing under a group of Rmoneys, who use it for a tax write-off. Ai yai yai!!
I hear you both….no need to replicate bad behavior and when you like where you live you make do, know that it will pass. Meta since these are younger people they will move. My mom lived in a rent controlled building for over 30 years and she saw so many young people move in and move out. They normally don’t stay over five years due to jobs or relationship goes bad. It’s the older people who stay the longest and are more respectful usually. Good luck to you both.

I moved to an apartment last year, after having lived in my own home for the past 29 years.
I actually really like it, and my upstairs neighbors can be loud at times (we’ve got very generous patios, so they are out there with friends quite a bit), but they’re considerate — don’t stay up late partying. 🙂

Even cooler, planets visible at Twilight, Evening sky: Venus and Jupiter, towards the North, blew me away last night at 9:45. IF you look a bit Southward, you will see Saturn. All just so stunning!! I predict, if skies are clear, a couple days after the new moon, when the first gibbous moon appears, this sun/moon/planetary configuration will be mighty beautiful to gaze upon!! Watch for it.

House GOP leaders are punting on voting again on President Obama’s trade agenda, possibly until the end of July.
After Friday’s failed vote to pass aid for workers displaced by trade deals, known as Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) set up a process allowing the House to conduct a do-over of the vote by Tuesday.
But Obama and GOP leadership aren’t yet in a position where TAA is any more likely to pass. So the House Rules Committee on Monday night attached a provision to a “rule” governing parameters for debate on the intelligence authorization bill that extends the possibility for the chamber to vote on TAA again to July 30.
The House will consider the rule containing the provision to extend the possible trade re-vote on Tuesday afternoon.
This is precisely why TPA needs to be about implementing a fast-track and an up or down vote. These people cannot be trusted to get work DONE.
the DEMS are responsible for this fiasco…they voted against worker training (TAA) in order to torpedo TPA and ultimately TPP…to hell with workers…..YET this is supposed to be the reason they oppose a trade deal because it hurts workers….HYPOCRITES

Hello to my favorite people on the planet. Looongtime lurker and avid follower of almost all of you coming out today because I can’t contain the joy that MY, err… OUR, beloved FLOTUS, First daughters and First Grandma are finally coming to my part neighborhood. I’m stationed in Vicenza, can you believe it?? I couldn’t believe my luck when I first heard of this trip! Still not sure of the itinerary and schedule and how much exposure, if any, us simple gov’t workers, will be given, but I’m looking forward to Thursday like I never remember looking forward to anything in my life before, ok, maybe Nov 4, 2008 vote results. I have been DREAMING of getting a hug from our Hugger In Chief ever since 2008, I don’t know if a military installation is where that dream will come true, but for me, just being a few meters away from all of them and finally seeing them LIVE, will be just like having been hugged. I promise to delurk once more to fill you beautiful obama.diary people in after the event, hopefully with close up pics and good inside stories.
