    [Good grief!]

JOHANNESBURG — President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan, who faced arrest on international charges of crimes against humanity and genocide, slipped out of South Africa on Monday morning, dealing a serious blow to the International Criminal Court’s six-year campaign to bring him to justice.

Mr. Bashir’s private jet was seen flying out of a South African military airport near Pretoria, apparently unhindered by the South African authorities who had been ordered by their country’s High Court to prevent him from departing.

A lawyer for the South African government confirmed on Monday afternoon that Mr. Bashir had left, and Sudan’s minister for information told reporters that Mr. Bashir was aboard the plane and was expected back in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, on Monday evening. Sudanese officials had given conflicting information about his whereabouts during his two-day visit here, claiming at one point on Sunday that he had already left South Africa.

A South African High Court on Sunday issued an order calling for the authorities to prevent Mr. Bashir from leaving the country because of the charges against him at the International Criminal Court.

Finland’s government wants the country to turn away from fossil fuels and look towards horse manure to heat its homes instead, it’s reported.

The new coalition’s manifesto sets out plans for the large-scale use of horse dung as a renewable source of energy, the national broadcaster Yle reports. One energy company is already trying out a biofuel made by mixing horse manure with a wood-based litter, which is then burned to create power. The Fortum group says the annual waste created by three horses would be enough to heat a family home for a year. And with about 77,000 horses in Finland, there’s the potential for more than 20,000 homes to become completely manure-warmed.

Chicago valedictorian accepted to college _ 26 times

CHICAGO (AP) — For many high school students, deciding on a college comes down to one or two schools.

For Arianna Alexander of Chicago, it came down to 26 — including pretty much the whole Ivy League.

Chicago’s WLS-TV (http://abc7.ws/1C3FWxC ) reports that the Kenwood Academy’s valedictorian has picked the University of Pennsylvania after the kind of collegiate competition that’s typically reserved for students who excel at shooting basketballs or throwing footballs.
But schools offered a total of more than $3 million in scholarships to Alexander because of her academic record. Her grade point average is 5.1 — or 1.1 points higher than she would have achieved had she merely achieved straight A’s.
Alexander says she wants to be an entrepreneur and open four restaurants after graduating from Penn’s Wharton School of Business.

At least 23 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in suicide attacks in the Chadian capital N’Djamena, officials say.
Attackers on motorcycles blew themselves up outside two police buildings, say witnesses.

A government minister blamed Nigeria’s militant Islamist group Boko Haram in an address on state TV, Reuters news agency reports.
The group has not said if it was behind the attack.

But it has often carried out suicide bomb attacks during its six-year insurgency in neighbouring Nigeria.

This is what has been driving me crazy: All through progressive punditry and the posturing of Sanders/Warren, it’s all about the idea that past deals sucked and their childish view that ANY American job lost is unacceptable. Of course, tons of jobs will be lost, no new ones made as other manufacturing countries fill the void and we will have nothing on the books to help workers or level the playing field. This is the kind of union posturing that gives unions a bad name, and did nothing in the 60’s-90’s to modernize our jobs as other countries filled the vacuum. I got into it with someon on twitter and asked for FACTS about the current TPP, and the only source they gave me was Amy (“Obama is a war criminal” Goodman!

57F, it’s painful that elected leaders can be so dogmatic as to not see when it’s time to move with the times. OTH, IMO, it’s sadly reflective of their sound byte mentality, AND their mental flatfooted-ness. They latched on to a slogan or ideology that was good for its time, that garnered them votes, and now they won’t let it go ’cause they’re too shallow….and dumb….and so are too many of their constituents…. to realize that it needs retooling. Makes me want to hurl when I see them making a fuss without a grain of consciousness that their views are outdated.

100% agree with you 57 that is why I stopped listening to Thom Hartman. He has Bernie Sanders on every Friday and he keeps living in the past wanting to bring back manufacturing where people put things together by hand. The manufacturing in the USA is done by a few individuals who are highly skilled to using advanced machinery. The manufacturing in China and other low wage jobs will soon be gone too as machines take over. China wants high paying jobs to build their middle class and they are not in manufacturing. We need to be able to have small business get international contracts and import to these countries. It’s funny how all the Clinton backers fail to realize that it was HER husband that screwed us on NAFTA and PBO is trying to fix what he failed to do….as usual.

      Clapping!!

      http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2015/06/15/3669379/weather-channel-climate-change/

The Weather Channel has gone hawkish on climate change. It has started web- and broad-casting short but blunt messages from “25 influential voices on climate change, security, energy and peace.”

The “Climate 25” features former Bush Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, who warns that failure to take strong action on climate is “radical risk taking” for our economy. Unilever CEO Paul Polman talks about the $300 million in annual climate disruption costs hitting his company. New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, who explained why the Syrian civil war was “the revolution fueled by climate change.” I am one of the 25, as is climatologist Heidi Cullen, and White House science advisor John Holdren.

But the Weather Channel has focused on one particular target audience — conservatives. The Climate 25 include four retired generals or admirals, a former senior Pentagon official, and former CIA director James Woolsey. It includes former GOP Congressman Bob Inglis, former VP of the Heartland Institute (!) Eli Lehrer, and two GOP EPA chiefs — William K. Reilly and Christine Todd Whitman, who directly tells Republicans, “it’s our issue.

Their issue? No. It needs to be EVERYONE’S ISSUE!!!

        • 52 57andfemale
          June 15, 2015 at 12:27 pm

The solution lies in not electing know-nothings because they are “authentic” and start taking governance seriously again.

This Palinizing of American government has to stop.

              June 15, 2015 at 12:40 pm

And John McCain led the charge of “no shame” by putting Palin on the ticket and his continual affirmation of her right to be there. Without Palin, there NEVER would have been the tea party flood throughout all levels of American government. If he had an ounce of shame, he would have retired from the Senate. So, not only do we have the Palinistas throughout government, but they are proud of it, with no shame. Great.

[This makes me itch! Do they know something we don’t?]

A dense swarm of mayflies caused motorcycle crashes and the overnight closure of a bridge in the US state of Pennsylvania.

The sheer volume of insects reduced visibility, and turned the road surface of the bridge over the Susquehanna River, in Lancaster County, into a treacherous, slippery mess.

Piles of mayflies up to 2ft (0.6m) deep were seen the morning after.

Immature mayflies live in water, before hatching as adults to mate in swarms.

The bridge was closed late on Saturday, reopening early on Sunday, police said.

Reading this Post about the Prince party, some of you are just as much in a frenzy about the frenzy that the WHPC is whipping up. It is a hilarious read from outside looking in.

    Chill out people 😀 😀

Can’t chill so easily, GGail. For some of us of a certain age, we think of PBO as a son and cannot be cool when he is insulted. Yes, I realize that this is crazy and that The President is probably amused while I am steaming.

Surely you’ve noticed how nuts a few of us get when PBO runs up and down the stairs without holding on?

      From this piece:

Park and Dickerson are now part of something called U.S. Digital Services (USDS). Here’s how the President described its purpose.
Better digital tools could upgrade the websites of, say, the Veterans Administration, so users get crucial services that save time, money, and (for veterans in need of medical help) lives. “But what we realized was, this could be a recipe for something larger,” the president explains. “You will have a more user-friendly government, a more responsive government. A government that can work with individuals on individual problems in a more tailored way, because the technology facilitates that the same way it increasingly does for private-sector companies.” In other words, if Obama’s tech team can successfully rebuild the digital infrastructure of Washington—an outcome that is by no means certain yet—you might not only change its functionality. You might transform Americans’ attitudes about government too. And you might even boost their waning feelings of empowerment in an ideologically riven country of 320 million people.

He’s spoiling their plan….he’s making govt. accountable to the people and making it actually WORK. RWNJ’S can’t have that. #whytheyhatehim

Republicans Crushed As 86% Of Enrollees Are Satisfied With Their Obamacare

As Republicans are working the Supreme Court to take Obamacare away from everyone in states that have not set up their own exchange, a new Commonwealth Fund survey has found that Obamacare is actually really liked. That is to say that 86% of people who have purchased private health plans on the Obamacare exchanges or who gained access to Medicaid are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied.

More than 8 out of 10 (86% to be exact) adults with marketplace or Medicaid insurance are satisfied with it.

American Academy of Actuaries chimes in: GOP “fixes” for King v. Burwell are utterly worthless

Money quote: “If the Supreme Court throws out the subsidies … this is going to be a political disaster for Republicans, and they’re unprepared for it,” said Robert Laszewski, an Obamacare opponent who is president of Health Policy and Strategy Associates, a consulting firm. “It’s unbelievable how short-sighted the Republicans have been here.”
