Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family, I hope all is well with everyone this lovely Saturday morning. Congrats Carol, on being first this morning.

Congrats on First Carol. Good Morning Chips, Danny & RanMan. Wishing you all a great Saturday. What a week so far. I am kind of holding my breath on the TAA & TPA. I really think there is more to this than meets the eye. I am hoping this was all put on display to muck up te Repuglicans. Fingers crossed. The media is on a heyday denigrating our POTUS. Now he is a Lame Duck President. Gawd I hate the media. C-Span was justhorrendous this morning, had to turn it off. BBL

With fight for same-sex marriage such a regular point of conflict today, it’s easy to forget about the first fight for marriage equality: interracial marriage. But while anti-miscegenation laws may seem like a relic of the past, it wasn’t until 2000 that Alabama became the last state to adapt its constitutional laws on interracial marriage.

    • 17 jackiegrumbacher
      June 13, 2015 at 8:25 am

So, Pf, Alabama beat out Mississippi as the state most determined to stay unenlightened for the longest time. Guess it was a race to the bottom.

Thanks for this reminder. I’ve been thinking about the Loving case that legalized interracial marriage and wondering how Clarence Thomas will decide about same-sex marriage. I do believe that he will be a hypocrite even with his understanding that without the fight for interracial marriage, he and his current wife would not have been able to have a legal marriage.

Why did Dems vote against the TAA? It benefits workers for training doesn’t it?

    • 21 Vicki
      June 13, 2015 at 8:38 am

Dems that voted against The President’s trade policy care only about themselves.

    • June 13, 2015 at 9:26 am

They voted against TAA as a way to undermine the passage of TPA. It backfired because TPA was brought up and passed.

PBO heard about this strategy and went to the Hill to make a personal plea to them not to vote this way, to “play it straight” and vote their conscience on TAA. But they refused to do that once the vote came up. What happens next will be very interesting, to say the least.

        This is all so confusing.

I wonder if @NancyPelosi is making lemons out of lemonade, or if this was planned during her (private) meeting with PBO — which I heard from some source occurred before yesterday’s vote. What would have prompted her to give MSM “Obama Fails!” headline bait? Which MSM in lockstep of course “reported” yesterday.

We all the MSM can’t be trusted — they were ADAMANT before the TPA vote that it would not be voted on if TAA went down — which obviously wasn’t the case.

Is this proof that their “reporting” is really just parroting one another?

And this confuses me — didn’t TPA pass yesterday?

        More downthread…

I think they are trying to get the Republicans to pass the Highway Bill and are using TAA as leverage.

Linda, see my reply to Meta above.

What confuses me about both tweets is that they refer to TPA next week — but I thought TPA passed yesterday. Will both TAA and TPA be voted on next week?

        • 29 Linda
          June 13, 2015 at 12:00 pm

The media is clueless about what happened yesterday. They don’t understand that TAA-TPA-and TPP are NOT the same.

All three have to pass. IIRR the Senate passed all three together….and the House split them up. Republicans like piecemeal voting because they have limited intelligence on this matter

Morning all. This is a good day to turn off all media and focus on sending positive thoughts to our President. The media has got a new toy– an anti-PBO narrative they’re going to clinging to, no matter what the facts–so walk away from it for the sake of sanity.

    Good morning TOD.
It was posted on last thread but again—-GOOD NEWS!!!
6 Guatanamo detainees were released in the middle of last night!

    Total count is now 116.
Ready and cleared for release are 51 prisoners, or 49, I am not exact about that number. Meta, Carol hasn’t posted exact counts lately. If she does I will update my comments.

Either was—President Barack Obama moved closer to his goal of shutting down this disaster.

      • 42 Vicki
        June 13, 2015 at 8:35 am

        I checked Miami Herald
        51 ready-to-go (sooner the better)

        33 convicted murderers never-to-go
        32 Who knows

The never to go and who knows categories have been shrinking as cases get investigated and status changed. 2 of the ready to go had been never to go

At some point the Congress may decide that keeping this prison open is a bigger waste of money than it is worth it to them to defeat President Obama. Maybe.

G’morning Chips & TOD! Congrats Carol on #1 🙂 Happy Saturday everyone.

Thanks Vicki for the Guantanamo update. Slowly but surely, our President is getting it done. Five-10 yrs from now Warren and her emo-regressive ilk will be irrelevant. Just as some Dems are now scrambling to explain why they voted FOR GWB’s illegal Iraq war, so will these idiots scramble to explain why they voted AGAINST PBO’s trade deal.

    • 47 Vicki
      June 13, 2015 at 9:16 am

Your comment, hopefruit, is precisely what has been on my mind. I watched an episode of Turn and it is an AMC historical story of the Revolutionary War. George Washington is accurately portrayed as both a racist and a superb general.

The latest episode showed the small-minded back-biting members of his military who failed to follow him, sniped at him, and how GW turned it around.
I thought to myself—-Every American knows who George Washington is. A few know who Benedict Arnold was. And practically nobody knows or cares who the traitorous members of his coalition were.

The parallels to yesterday’s shameful behavior by dems are clear. EW, Ed S. are already irrelevant to me, no need to wait at all.

      • June 13, 2015 at 9:35 am

        GM Vicki…

I think that PBO knew what the DEM strategy was…that is why he told them to be true to themselves..he knew that they were going to vote against TAA, even though they supported TAA…he just shook his head…

not great. Very Violent. The portrayal of George Washington shows him to be a loon. Out of his mind. Also, very shrewd and an unbelievable CIC of the US Military.
I find it irresistible because the Setauket locations are still standing, the local characters are mostly real. Lots of source material available. Plus, I eat up history in general.

            June 13, 2015 at 10:53 am

The Setauket locations still standing are not the ones in the TV show. That was filmed elsewhere.
The real thing is an exhibit run by the town. Lots of revolutionary war sites on Long Island.

Bringing this over from yesterday’s EBR&S:

Update from our trip to western NC and the annual conference for our church (UMC). The resolution regarding same-sex marriage ended up getting tabled indefinitely. The Bishop managed to work it so that it was LATE on Wednesday when it even came up. Sure it was planned that someone would make the motion to table. There was some discussion, but because it was SO late and HOT, people just wanted to ghet it over with. It will, however, HAVE to be dealt with at our General Conference in 2016. The delegation we are sending (lay and clergy) are mostly conservative. The first day we arrived, one of the first things I was handed was a list of conservatives (lay and clergy) to vote for to go to GC. Get this, once we got in our seats, my husband took that list, went through the list of nominees and marked everyone of the lay people as those to NOT vote for!!!! I am doubtful that he will ever be able to vote for a D, especially for president. However, he has definitely changed this last year.

Hiking the AT as a chaplain changed his attitude about a lot of things. He had to be very conscious to being a good listener and to never judge anyone………to let people know he was open to anything the person needed/wanted to share and that he wouldn’t judge. I also think the other thing that has changed is that he now totally sees the craziness of the extreme in the Republican Party. We’ve had numerous discussions about what the extreme wing of any group can and does do and how destructive it is. Believe he has finally accepted that the Republican Party of today is not anywhere close to what it was when he became interested in politics……..early-mid 60’s.

Congress has lavished so much tax relief on the very richest Americans, in fact, that their burdens are falling even though overall income tax burdens are rising, especially for the middle class. And those with the very highest incomes have such abundant resources that they can neither consume much of their income nor find profitable places to invest their wealth.

After listening to his repeated insults towards PBO, I have wanted to say this to DeFazio for a while – the congressman from Oregon is a major league scumbag and that he will always be one; he is not fit to clean PBO’s feet

I live in Oregon and started to listen to NPR/OPB this morning and had to turn the radio off when Peter DeFazio started blasting PBO for preaching to them after disrespecting them by not coming to them earlier on. Also saying China wants in now that they know the safe guards are breachable. I was starting to like my own Blue Dog Dem Rep I usually am fighting with better. So embarrassed and angry about DeFazio’s holier than PBO attitude.

    • June 13, 2015 at 11:21 am

      • 79 globalcitizenlinda
        June 13, 2015 at 11:40 am

he is one of those I heard telling media that PBO has disrespected them (meaning congressional members) for a long time, that PBO doesn’t care about them (only cares for himself) and that PBO only comes to talk to them when he is in trouble. He was pushing the media line that PBO is arrogant/aloof and that they need to bring PBO down a peg or two.

DeFazio has been saying these types of things to anyone in the media who has a microphone and can repeat them. An example is on NPR’s Morning/Weekend Edition tha Obama Grandmama refers to above. You can go listen to it on the NPR website

    GM TODville.

I didn’t comment about yesterday’s congressional events, because I have no earthly idea what is going on, so there’s this explanation:

I did watch yesterday’s WHPB (which was about 2 hours late from scheduled time), and do know that Eric Schultz and John Earnest had a lively step and were grinning from ear-to-ear — you can’t fake the jubilant vibes they displayed, so it appears that everything is working out as planned.

It seems to me that the Obama Team and Nancy Pelosi correctly assessed the ODS fever from congressional Dems — which makes absolutely no sense, since if you were a Dem rep, whose endorsement (and dollars) would you rather have next year — Labor Unions or the most successful two-term President of the modern era? (see my response to Meta upthread).

    • June 13, 2015 at 11:28 am

Here’s my attempt to answer your post up above!

It is complex and confusing, but here is my understanding if that helps at all:

      1) The Senate passed TPA with the proviso that it be conjoined with TAA. That’s what made yesterday’s DEM fiasco so aggravating. They used TAA to undermine passage of TPA even though PBO pleaded them to play it straight, i.e., pass TAA and vote their conscience on TPA.
      2) Rather than face full defeat, Boehner sort of tried to override the rule and pushed a vote on TPA anyway. It passed. This left DEMS looking a bit like idiots but also holding the cards for what happens next.
      3) Pelosi may have floated the Highway Bill to POTUS in their private meeting before the vote. I did watch the WH briefing and Josh was quite effusive in expressing a hopeful positive outcome. He’s actually nearly always fairly upbeat but I definitely got the feeling there is more angling going on behind the scenes that is favorable to PBO.
      4) That last tweet you posted about GOP being confident they can pass TPA on its own…..That seems like a nasty heads up that they will put something into the works with the Senate to decouple TPA and TAA or use some other sort of procedural wrangling to drop TAA. If that happens, then DEMS need to prepare to look like utter idiots for cutting loose TAA, which expires Sept 30. Remember, TAA is a program that helps workers who have been displaced by NAFTA with training, support and assistance. So that looks like something close to their worst nightmare if that happens.

There is no doubt a lot of deal cutting going on right now. What’s not clear is how the GOP are going to slice this now that they have PBO sort of left hanging out there. My guess is that they are going to go ahead and pass TPA, no matter what.

    • June 13, 2015 at 11:33 am

The other quandary for me is how vehemently opposed House Dems are to TPA and TPP. They’ve voted overwhelmingly against it and have said quite nasty things in both public and private about PBO regarding this. How Pelosi turns this around and gets however many votes needed for passage if she so chooses will be quite the feat. I know she’s capable of it but this will be Herculean and will force her to wrangle her close friend and biggest anti-TPA/TPP loudmouth, Rosa Delauro and her coterie. Tagging on the Highway Bill would be a major coup if it happens and PBO will come out smelling like a rose despite the bruising. WIN WIN WIN.

      Let’s see how this unfolds……

Ha. I watched the remarks until the candidate mentioned President Obama FIRST (before “my husband, Bill Clinton”) and thought it can’t get any better than that for ME (the center of the universe), so I turned to HGTV.

I am very glad Hillary mentioned President Obama right out of the starting gate, to applause. If she intends to “build on,” then that message will be palatable. Also noted the reason behind having the rally from Roosevelt Island … where previously she was compared to Eleanor Roosevelt, now she’s looking to be compared to Franklin. Anything that helps the 99% and builds on the fine work of President Obama works for me, on message.
