So, my wonderpup Stewie has learned a new trick.

The Missus was off Thursday, and she had a hair appointment. She was going to leave Stewie at home. But, she was unable to, because he gave her the most pathetic look ever. She said that he looked as if was going to break out bawling. So, he went for a ride.

Well played, Stewart Gilligan, well played.

Good day TOD … another long day ….

Based on the little I’ve had time to read this morning, Senator Clinton left no room on her left for Senator Sanders or anyone else as she emulates President Obama’s commitment to eradicating inequality.

    We’ll see …..

Bobfr, Yes, we’ll see. As I listened to the speech, I was reminded of this insightful article by Nancy LeTourneau from last month.

President Obama Moved the Overton Window to the Left

      By Nancy LeTourneau

      —————————–

First, the President demonstrated in both 2008 and 2012 that what we now call the Obama coalition is capable of electing someone to the highest office in the land. Instead of chasing after the so-called Reagan Democrats (as conventional wisdom would have dictated at the time), he bet his cards on his own ability to expand the electorate with people of color and young voters. It worked! Now it’s possible for someone like Hillary Clinton to run for president on the issues that matter to this expanded electorate – which is significantly father to the left that it was when her husband ran in ’92 and ’96.

Secondly, I’d point to something Ron Brownstein wrote a few months ago:

One senior Obama adviser says the administration β€œTo Do list” after 2012 included thinking β€œabout how you lock in the Obama coalition for Democrats going forward. Because it’s not a 100 percent certainty that they come out for the next Democrat.” Part of the answer, the adviser said, was to pursue aggressive unilateral action on β€œa set of issues where we have an advantage … and believe are substantively the right thing to do” and dare Republicans to oppose him.

        Thank you hf2.

Through his boundless empathy & commitment to making life a little bit fuller, for Every person (even those who detest him), President Obama has transformed the American electorate.

The one person who I suspect knows that better than any other is VP Biden. It may be that Senator Clinton caught the clue, as well.

If she did, and sticks with it, Senator Sanders & Gov O’Malley should save their time and other people’s money.

The one person who will test her, to her core, if he decides to run is VP Biden.

        As you said, “we’ll see.”

Hard to see VP Biden running now that Beau has died. I would imagine that he would want to spend more time with family. He knows how consuming the job of POTUS is.

Exactly Nena. You can like, love, appreciate, support, or even be indifferent to HRC. But if you’re going to “praise her”, just to trash PBO – especially while doing so on false grounds – I have a serious problem with that approach.

  24. June 13, 2015 at 3:48 pm

And so what I’ve learned during this Obama era is that when people resort to personal attacks to make their case, it is often because their position lacks merit. My response, then, has been to look a little deeper and question – not our shared goals – but their inadequate strategies for reaching them. In other words…I’ve become a pragmatic progressive. Thanks, Obama.

Thirteen Activists Stand Trial for Attempting to Desegregate Airport Restaurant
On June 13, 1961, an interracial group of eighteen rabbis and ministers participated in a freedom ride to Tallahassee, Florida, sponsored by the Congress of Racial Equality. The riders experienced a few minor confrontations along the way, but were spared major incidents of violence in Florida due to the governor’s negotiations with local officials to ensure that the riders were left alone.

On June 15, 1961, shortly before they were scheduled to board an airplane and return to Washington, D.C., the interfaith riders and local activists attempted to integrate the Tallahassee Airport’s segregated restaurant. The restaurant closed to avoid serving the riders and eight riders departed as planned for Washington. Ten riders and three local activists remained at the airport and demanded service throughout the night and into the following day. On June 16, 1961, the group was arrested and charged with unlawful assembly.

The riders and activists stood trial on June 22, 1961. Judge John Rudd acquitted the local activists of the unlawful assembly charge but convicted the ten interfaith riders and sentenced them to thirty days in jail or a $500 fine. The riders appealed to the United States Supreme Court but were denied relief. In August 1964, nine of the interfaith riders returned to Tallahassee to serve their jail sentences. After they were released, the riders enjoyed a meal at the airport restaurant which had been desegregated by federal order just months after their convictions.

    JUNE 13th, 2005

United States Senate Formally Apologizes for Failure to Pass Anti-Lynching Bills

James Cameron (91), largely considered the only known survivor of a lynching attempt.

Between 1882 and 1968, approximately 4743 people were lynched in America, and nearly three-quarters of those lynching victims were black. Lynchings were extrajudicial and heinous killings, usually intended to warn other blacks not to transgress racialized social, political, and economic boundaries. Victims often were hanged, but sometimes were shot, stabbed, or burned alive. Their murders ranged from community spectacles at which hundreds of participants ate picnics and took body parts and photo postcards as souvenirs to low-profile concealed murders involving as few as two assailants.
During the lynching era, seven United States presidents exhorted Congress to pass legislation authorizing federal prosecution of lynch mobs. Two hundred anti-lynching bills were introduced but only three passed the House of Representatives and none passed the Senate due to Southern conservatives’ successful filibusters. In the absence of federal protection, and amidst the inaction of local state courts, lynchings persisted for decades.
On June 13, 2005, the United States Senate formally apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching legislation.
