In cool LL news:
Mother of LL may not be too happy at the quantity of Africa DNA in our ancestry. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But, you’re Cuban – why should having African DNA be a surprise to any of you????
I figured I had African DNA. The surprise was the Jewish DNA. Not the fact that I *have* Jewish DNA, but that it’s Ashkenazi, not Sephardic.
And as far as the African DNA, not a bother to me or my brothers. But my mom, bless her soul, is of the old school white Cuba.
I remember my nephew’s babysitter, who also was Cuban. She once said “In the old days, blacks knew where they belonged and whites knew where they belonged.” Which I found hilarious coming out of her because, let’s just say, she didn’t need to tan.
We’ll continue to pray for your mother LL
She’s gotten MUCH better the older she’s gotten. I mean, yeah, stories to tell.
LL, Do you know about the Conversos? In 1492 Jews were outlawed in Spain and Portugal and many converted to Catholicism in public and kept the Sabbath in secret.
The Jewish genes, however, remained unchanged. Easy to see that those old lines may live on in you.
Oh, I know about the Conversos. But they were mostly Sephardic, which makes the Ashkenazic ancestry odd. Of course, Cuban Jews are mostly Ashkenazic, so that may explain that.
Jews were peripatetic. Merchants, for example. Traders. Small numbers but spread everywhere.
I had mine done 84 percent black 1.1 caveman the rest European. Don’t tell your Mom.
What really does trip me out is the 3% Scandinavian ancestry. Visigoths?
Uh oh…
If i start wearing a helmet and swinging a sword, you’ll know why…
HA HA!
yanno …LL…if everyone had such a test done…there would be plenty of surprises…the categories of white and non-white…would no longer be valid…this is fascinatng
There was a tweet I just saw from Soledad O’Brien saying that there are many more multi-ethnic Americans than accounted for in the Census
no doubt
Again, I will trot out my history.
After the initial Viking invasion in 796 or so, the Vikings spread out and intermarried throughout Europe. Normandy, for example, the French beach we all know from D-Day, was named for the Northmen who established a duchy there around 800AD.
The Normans then went on to carve out a multicultural kingdom in Sicily and southern Italy.
Those Vikings were always world travelers and left some bits and pieces with the locals. My husband was adopted and has no clue about his heritage. I have been urging him to get one of these tests.
Wow…..This is Fascinating
I know! I was going to do it myself for my birthday. I still might, just to see if there are any variations.
would it be that different from your brother” results
I doubt it, but I just think it’d be cool to have my own DNA results. :nerd:
smilin
My brother just did this, too, and I was also shocked. Main percentages are Southern Europe and Native American, some West African, East Asian, Morrocan, tiny bit Scandinavian. What a mixture!
All humans are mutts. We should glory in it.
Yes, it’s truly beautiful.
seriously!
I had mine done as well. 63% Sub Sahairan(sp) African, 32% Northern European. The surprise for me was how little Native DNA I have. There is a Cuban connection as well.
That’s neat. How did you get the color map & stats into your tweet? I’ve had my results back for weeks and everytime I try printing or saving to my PC, the color disappears. Unfortunately, my Mom’s sample was not sufficient for the test; yesterday, I received her new test kit.
The map was the screen capture that my bro sent me. Depending on what browser you have, you should get a screen capture add on. It’s a nifty tool
Thanks!

Thank you very much, Nerdy. Wonderful round-up for us to soak in the news and complex events of the last few days.
For those of us not so overly stressed by the ugly dems battling their President and/or the looming deadlines for the SCOTUS ACA decision, not to mention the Iran P+5 Nuclear deal.
Too much for me. I can’t even imagine how President Obama gets a wink of sleep or downtime.
I’m super stressed out right now. Reminds me of the ACA vote. SO sick of Dems and their hideous rationalizations, stooping to jerks like Trumka. UGH.

You’re welcome, Meta.
Thank you Nerdy. WP is not awesome today but you are.
Thanks, Vetivera24.
From Jan2015
Here’s some of what the President actually said:
So the question for those of us here tonight is how we, all of us, can better reflect America’s hopes…
Imagine if we broke out of these tired old patterns. Imagine if we did something different. Understand, a better politics isn’t one where Democrats abandon their agenda or Republicans simply embrace mine. A better politics is one where we appeal to each other’s basic decency instead of our basest fears. A better politics is one where we debate without demonizing each other; where we talk issues and values, and principles and facts, rather than “gotcha” moments, or trivial gaffes, or fake controversies that have nothing to do with people’s daily lives…
If we’re going to have arguments, let’s have arguments, but let’s make them debates worthy of this body and worthy of this country.
GE all. Just a quick drop by. Actually have a little time for a change. Heading across our Northern border tomorrow and packing up for the trip.
Safe travels Japa and enjoy!
🙂
Hope to. Very short visit. Turn right back around on Sunday.
Short indeed. But it’s way better than NO visit at all! LOL
{{Japa}} Miss your face, you! Will this trip take in your special day? If yes, I’ll share my wishes now – enjoy it when it arrives!
Going up for my son’s in-laws 50th anniversary. I’ll try to be around more. Miss you too
Glad POTUS is taking a moment. But I bet he’s also gonna work on twisting some arms.
uhhh huhhh…uh huhhhhh
What a SWEET antidote to the day!!
thanks JER 😀
Uh
Really?!?! I bet that cheered POTUS up.
POTUS enjoys all of it. He understands the MSM as well as political emoprogs, wingnuts and righties have created an environment in which we don’t talk about the policy. We talk about how the policy makes us FEEL.
To complete and end my “tonight in history” theme—–Game of Thrones seems to me to be based on Henry VII–the infamous Henry the Eighth’s father. So far as I know this opinion is mine alone.
I may be among the minority that is really concerned about the domestic politics of China.
it seems like there is a systematic purge going on in the ranks of the country’s one party.
I feel as though the leader of China is using the instrument of anti-corruption, to get rid of his potential competition.
Of course many of the people are happy because they are told that all these high-placed officials are facing charges JUST because of corruption.
It seems so convenient
hmmmmm..
i am ignorant of Chinese politics…
Just has to be said…..
Gee, he seems kinda popular IMO. 😉 LOL!! ❤ 🐻 ❤
Look at all those empty seats…..

The Mother Jones’ article on Chester breaks my heart; I have family and friends there, some of whom are quoted in the article. Chester is about five miles and a lifetime away from my home; if fact, some neighborhoods of Chester are a lifetime away from other neighborhoods in that very city. Thanksgiving of 1995, City Team Ministries were short of turkeys for their gift baskets; my sons and I loaded the trunk with our donation; when we arrived in downtown Chester, the boys asked “when was there a war here?” Puzzled, I asked them the genesis of their question; they responded that the downtown looked like my pictures of Beirut… They were right; it did…
The Chester that I knew as a teen was a thriving city. The saying was you could quit your job before lunch, and be hired and working for a new employer after lunch. The sign on the train trestle read “What Chester Makes, Makes Chester.” Unfortunately, most of the industry left and with that the good paying jobs. The politicians used, and some continue to use, Chester as their personal patronage piggy bank. There has been some development — a casino, a prison, and soccer stadium; despite promises, very few of the jobs went to Chester residents. There has also been very little positive economic impact for the small business in the city — suburban folks that work at or visit the new development sites drive straight in and out of the city, they don’t stop for anything…
Our President is just too funny & cute by a half!!! 🙂 🙂
