It’s wonderful to have a president take time out of his busy day to answer questions honestly and not dismissively. Thanks, President Barack Obama!

Nerdy, I loved the summary of the questions–they were actually good–and loved the photos. So glad our President visited the Shrine of our Lady of Charity. He always knows the right thing to do.

ty Nerdy – wonderful recap & do hope you are staying safe amid the reality of nature overflowing its banks.

Meanwhile – I must truly be immersed in issues outside of politics and government as I’ve only just realised that the Governor of Texas and the PM of Australia share a name. We need to be saved from the abbotts

“Hastert spent 20 years in the House representing Illinois, and was elected Speaker of the House in 1999 after former Speaker Newt Gingrich retired and the heir-apparent, former Rep. Bob Livingston, abruptly retired amidst charges he had carried on inappropriate sexual affairs.”

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnstanton/former-house-speaker-dennis-hastert-indicted-on-federal-char#.wx6LrnL2p

How times change – the last republican carrying on an “inappropriate sexual affair” was elected to congress.

I had totally forgotten about Bob Livingston, but suddenly thought I remembered why he resigned then and looked for the story. The trouble with Hastert’s being “in the news” again – no matter the issue – is that the RWNJs will bring up Bill Clinton’s old story again. Ugh! Here’s a little more on Livingston from wiki:

“During debate over the impeachment of Bill Clinton on December 19, 1998, Hustler Magazine publisher Larry Flynt offered one million dollars for each unflattering sexual story about Republican members of congress. After one such story was made public about him by Flynt, Livingston acknowledged that he had had an affair and resigned as Speaker-elect. He challenged President Bill Clinton to resign as well. Livingston then announced he would vacate his House seat in May 1999. His leaving office came despite support from Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri that the Democrats could work with Livingston and not make a continued issue of Livingston’s affair. Livingston said that had he become Speaker, it would have been more difficult for the Republicans to carry out Clinton’s impeachment and trial. Thus, he removed himself from contention.”

      Ugh, again.

I knew nothing about him jacqueline – or any of them – during the Clinton impeachment I was completely confused by US politics – with PBO on the scene I decided the time was good to learn how it all operated. Thanks for the info – seems times rarely change for the GOP – life is about sex rather than governing

    To Nerdy:
    You’ve done it again!!!!!
Finger on the pulse of what is important.
Not simply the zeitgeist but the spirit underlying the events of the day.

This @POTUS and President Obama communicating directly with his people is THE BIGGEST THING in a long while.
Without filters and without pondering the political advantage of taking this position or that position, or coming out strongly for this or that, or calling for whatever—-etc. etc. etc.
Here we have the actual human being telling us in the moment what he thinks. Needs no consultants or advisers to rate the merits of what he thinks on a vast array of issues on his constituents minds
    Unprecedented!!

We are very lucky to be alive and paying attention in the Age of Obama. And lucky that Nerdy and Chips are chronicling the awesomeness.

To contrast, if you want to know what Lady Walmart thinks about things go to her Issues page.
Oh, wait, what Issues page? She will have to get back to you on that.

“U.S.A.! U.S.A.! In America, we play football with our hands and send our best lawyers to deal with FIFA. Attorney General Loretta Lynch just finished her press conference announcing a 47-count indictment against 14 FIFA officials and sports marketers. Most of the charges are for racketeering and corruption.Corruption in FIFA is an open secret. But there are two reasons why America is the only country that can really go after the international soccer cartel:

We straight don’t give a fuck about soccer.
This is how we roll, legally, post 9/11.

Let’s start with the second point. This century, America has been totally willing to flex its muscles to bring foreign nationals to justice in the United States. If we think you are a terrorist, we turn into Liam Neeson: We will look for you, we will find you, and we will kill you. But since the financial crisis, the Department of Justice has extended that logic to financial criminals. The DOJ has wide latitude to go after people and gather evidence from banks and other financial institutions. Don’t comply with the DOJ request, and your bank is going to have a hard time moving money around globally. The DOJ has a lot of experience prosecuting exactly this type of crime….continued”

I was falling asleep last night listening to BBC Radio 6, and a news bulletin came on. Of course, the main story was about Fifa. And as I was fighting off sleep, I heard the newsreader say that an anonymous source disclosed that Sepp was a target of the ongoing investigation.

      • May 28, 2015 at 8:34 pm

Target of Swiss, U.S or both?

I watched BBC newsnight and 20 of the 30 minute program was was this. BBC radio also tweeted out a link to a profile they did our A.G. Lynch.

I don’t think people in the U.S really grasp how big of a hero A.G. Lynch is overseas…one example (although I think some of his conclusion are wishful thinking) http://www.politico.eu/article/seven-take-aways-from-the-fifa-arrests/

There can’t be a single soccer fan anywhere in the world who didn’t have the sports-lover’s equivalent of a righteous orgasm on learning of the arrest at dawn — by the Swiss police — of seven FIFA senior officials. As of this writing, these men were being readied for extradition to the United States, where they will be prosecuted for “racketeering” — a fabulous word that is America’s greatest bequest to the lexicon of criminal justice.

Here are seven short take-aways from the episode, some reflective of hard fact, others, perhaps, of wishful thinking:

The pantheon of world soccer has a new hero. To the names of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and Messi, add another: Loretta Lynch. The US attorney general, confirmed by the Senate just three weeks ago by the most un-soccer-like score of 56-43, is destined to go down as the most consequential woman in the history of the game. She has burst into the Augean stables of FIFA with a team of industrial cleaners, determined to rid the governing body of international soccer of its legendary filth…continued
