“The pantheon of world soccer has a new hero,” said Politico’s Tunku Varadarajan. “To the names of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and Messi, add another: Loretta Lynch. The US attorney general, confirmed by the Senate just three weeks ago by the most un-soccer-like score of 56-43, is destined to go down as the most consequential woman in the history of the game.”

    * The Pew poll finds that Americans believe by 58-33 that free trade has been a “good thing,” rather than a “bad thing,” for the United States.

But those numbers are not meaningfully different among Democrats (58-33), or among liberal Dems (59-32).

Still, the Pew poll also does find that while Americans generally see good effects in free trade, they do worry about its impact on jobs and wages:

I can’t believe that the ‘elected potentates of doom’ are still fighting nearly everything that our President has been able to put in place for the Americans that need the most support. In my 60+ years in this D. of C. I have never witnessed such a mean-spirited, do nothing group of ‘nit-wits’ as these. God bless America; if these Boehner hypocrites continue to be selected to these positions of determining the destinies of so many. Thank God for President Obama and those who have working brains and empathy for us fellow humans. Yvonne D. Baskerville, Senior servant and Retired Federal Statistician

Blue Dog Democrats are now turning on POTUS over his water ruling. GAH, they are enough to drive us crazy.

Dems buck Obama on water rule

Dozens of congressional Democrats are joining Republicans to back legislation blocking the Obama administration’s new rule to redefine its jurisdiction over the nation’s waterways.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers made the regulation final Wednesday in an attempt to clarify that small streams, wetlands, headwaters and tributaries are covered by the Clean Water Act and the rules that go along with it.

Opponents labeled the rule as a massive “power grab” by the Obama administration that could give federal officials authority over every creek and puddle.

Three moderate Democrats in the Senate and 24 in the House have joined the GOP in opposition, but leave them far from the two-thirds majorities they would need for a veto-proof vote to overturn the rule.

    • May 28, 2015 at 3:51 pm

these are the things that remind me that there are DEMs in name only….but the important part is that they do not have a veto proof majority..so they call this a power grab as a way to deflect for the need for clean water….

House Resolution 326 would direct the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to conduct a study on income inequality in the commonwealth. The study would include factors that have contributed to the increase in income inequality over the last several decades, gender differences in education levels and occupations and how they contribute to the gender wage gap, comparing wages for working minorities and working non-minorities with the same level of education, comparing wages for minority women and non-minority women with the same level of education, and comparing wages for men and women in female-dominated, gender-balanced and male-dominated occupations.

One might argue that this only happened because she was speaking to an African-American audience, among whom Obama retains enormous loyalty. But African-Americans are the Democratic Party’s core constituency, and encouraging strong turnout among them is critical to any Democratic nominee; this won’t be the last time she does something similar.

Clinton won’t be identical to Obama, for the simple reason that they’re different people. Though they come from the same party and thus agree on most things, there will no doubt be an issue here or there on which she promises something slightly different. But let’s not forget that as much as Republicans despise Obama, he did get elected twice. If Clinton can hold his coalition together, she’ll win, too. So she has a lot more incentive to stick with him than to distance herself.

There really is no reason for any democrat to distance themselves from PBO. If I recall correctly, this “distancing” meme began with the msm when Gore was running and for whatever reason, he did distance himself from Clinton. That worked out real well.

      • May 28, 2015 at 5:13 pm

when folks distance themselves from the President..the press call it a slap in the President’s face….this article was the first to tell a different story

  44. May 28, 2015 at 4:53 pm

The point is that tearing financial giants down to size—to what size, no one seems to know—would be a staggering logistical challenge. The bare-bones Sanders bill, just four pages in all, makes no effort to grapple with that challenge. It simply directs the Treasury Secretary to identify systemically important firms and somehow break them up. It’s a pretty blasé approach to restructuring America’s financial sector, which does, after all, sluice oceans of capital into productive enterprises, while employing 6 million people and accounting for nearly one-tenth of our GDP.

    another interesting read…

Simple answers to complex situations are never the answer

    • May 28, 2015 at 4:58 pm

      More from the article…

The main thrust of America’s Dodd-Frank financial reforms and the world’s Basel 3 regulations has been to limit leverage and force banks to hold more capital. The capital requirements get progressively tougher as banks get bigger, essentially a tax on bigness. And they’re working. The big banks are better-capitalized and less dependent on overnight financing that can vanish in a crisis. Giants like AIG and Goldman Sachs that once escaped serious regulation because they weren’t considered commercial banks are now subject to close scrutiny by the Fed and a new Treasury-led Financial Stability Oversight Committee. That’s why General Electric is selling its finance arm, GE Capital. Big financial institutions can’t hide in the shadows anymore. They must also draw up detailed “living wills,” blueprints for how they could be dismantled with minimal chaos if they ever collapsed.

http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-story-weve-told-ourselves-about-too.html Nancy Tourneau also addresses the issue, drawing on an article by Michael Grunwald who wrote the definitive book on the Recovery Act. He argues that the problem was risk taking not the size of the banks. Many of the worst offenders were not large banks. The large banks took on some of the failed entities to help prevent a depression.
