Maura Zurick: First Lady Michelle Obama Urges Oberlin College Graduates To Make A Difference

First Lady Michelle Obama told nearly 700 Oberlin College graduates Monday to wake up and “play your part in our great American story.” Obama urged the class of 2015 to volunteer for campaigns or “better yet, run for office yourselves.” She encouraged the graduates to not shy away from the clamor and polarization of the real world and told them to face the revolutions of their time: climate change, economic inequality, human rights and criminal justice reform. “Today, I want to urge you to actively seek out the most contentious, polarized, gridlocked places you can find,” she said in her 25-minute remarks to graduates, family members and spectators in Tappan Square.

“Because so often, throughout our history, those have been the places where progress really happens –- the places where minds are changed, lives transformed, where our great American story unfolds.” Zoe Madonna, an East Asian studies graduate, called the first lady brilliant. “This is going to be a story that I can tell 50 years from now about the time the first lady spoke at my graduation, and I really enjoyed that it wasn’t a pat-yourself-on-the-back speech,” Madonna said. “Usually when dignitaries come, they keep their real selves, real opinions quiet, but you could hear what she really thought, what she really wants for us shining through in her speech.”

VC,Girl what are you still doing up so late?
Don’t let the BBQ and other food fool you that tomorrow is Monday……
Why is it I make a sincere vow to become a vegetarian a week before Memorial Day?
I keep doing this every year for the past ten years!
I cannot wait for the first hot dog to come off the grill.
And those damn Grill Masters who give the first bite to the dog are my arch enemies.
I am to damn embarrassed to say that I like them burnt…..
        How was your day?

Hope you at least got one well-done hot dog, to satisfy your charcoal craving! 😀

          I don’t think I could ever become a vegetarian, though I could manage being a chickenarian or a poultrarian. 😉 😉

I am always up late, LDS, even when I’m not in the village. Sleep and I are not on friendly terms so I’ve stopped trying to fight it to stay longer with me. When I’m not here at night I’m reading something light, hoping it’ll put me to bed.

          • May 25, 2015 at 11:34 pm

I have a dear friend who is “not on friendly terms” with sleep.
            I almost feel guilty.
I say “almost” because she has so many gifts and talents I just would like to get inside her brain and see what is going on.
You name it, she does it.
Sweet sleep restores and revive me. “Rest” should be my first name.
The lack of both, I am a mess. Look like a wreck. Do not want to be bothered……Period.
She on the other hand is calm, cool, thinking, planning, looks great with less than half of the sleep I need.
I can fall asleep on a NY subway. Wake up exactly when my stop arrives. Walk out the train as if I am Michael Bloomberg mistress.
(Ugh)! I cannot believe I even thought that.
Brain is going now. I even see two iPads……
I hope this puts you to sleep. It sure did it for me….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……zzzzzz

I stop worrying about those shitters a long time ago.
They are still in diapers……I am not trying to change them.
I’ve young men and women to mentor.

Nerdy, how on earth you were able to put this beautiful post together in the middle of all the madness going on, I’ll never know – so, even more endless thanks than usual! Thank you Legend and, again, stay safe.

LL, be careful with Tilapia and other fish that are farm raised.
A chef friend of mine said they are full of antibiotic because of the crowed conditions they are confined.
Of course, is you ask in the best of best restaurants they will say it is “wild”.
So what are we to do?

NW, sorry to hear about the floods in Austin, Texas.
I will keep you and everyone there in my prayers tonight.
The weather channels are completely lost for words.
For all the dumb ass who brought a snowball on the Senate floor to make a dumb point about climate change:
Are you going to bring buckets of rain to try convincing intelligent people that you are a dumb ass?

I am so done with ignorant people breathing the same air as we struggle to call them “humans”.

Dammit. Warriors lost game 4 to Rockets 115-128. THey won Game 3 by 35 points. What the hell happened? Okay I got that off my chest. Steph returned to game after dropping to floor on his shoulder and head. I wish him the best. I love to watch him play so I hope he will be in Game 5.
