Pete Souza: “This was one of the great trips of the year, albeit brief, when we visited Ireland in May. This rope line in Moneygall was particularly fun as people reacted so jubilantly to the President and First Lady. It was somewhat unusual, though, in that the sun kept coming in and out, and at times it was even pouring rain.” May 23, 2011

Tis a glorious morning in Ireland and for all fair-minded generous people the world over!!!!
Bravo, Ireland! World leader on equal marriage rights are equal rights.

A precinct in Dublin voted over 70% in favor!

Thank you, Chips for this heartfelt tribute to Ireland and its courageous citizens. Cousin Henry must be walking on air. He and his relationship with PBO surely was a factor. I am happy that TOD has gotten to know him.

You contrast what happened in Ireland yesterday to what is going on in our country where a pedophile can have his picture taken with damn near all of the Republican hopefuls for President. Then add to it the fact that this pedophile in some circles is being protected and in the case of Mike Huckster, Duggar is almost made the victim. We are truly at a crossroad; we either sink or swim in 2016.

Oh my gosh, what a day! Historic moment for Ireland!

And Chips, thanks so much for reminding us of one of the BEST TRIPS EVER!!!! And what incredible synchronicity that it was 4 years ago on this very historic day!!!!

      From the article:
“… Senior figures from the “no” campaign, who sought to prevent Ireland’s constitution from being amended to permit same-sex marriages, say the only question is how large the “yes” side’s margin of victory will be from Friday’s vote.

“We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate. That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world of liberty and equality. So it’s a very proud day to be Irish,” said Leo Varadkar, a Cabinet minister who came out as gay at the start of a government-led effort to amend Ireland’s conservative Catholic constitution….”

GM TOD! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Somewhat amazed but not surprised that our Chips has her montage playing at the visitor center in Moneygall…what an honor!

“For four women in rural India, the struggle to become solar engineers began before they’d even set foot in a classroom. None of the women had ever been allowed to travel without a male companion. Neighbors insisted that the training should be given to men. And none of the women had attended school past eighth grade. “No one in the village has ever done anything like this. People said that boys should get the training, then we were told that the project would only train girls,” said Bhagwati, one of the Social Work and Research Centre’s ‘barefoot solar engineers,’ to interviewers in a recent United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) article. “It took people a long time to accept this.”

…Accept it they eventually did, and after three months of training the women returned to assemble and oversee the installation of electric lights in each of their villages — villages that had previously never been connected to a power grid. They now make between Rs 1000 to Rs 1350 (around 15 to 21 US dollars) a month performing routine tests, fixing equipment and maintaining the lights. Their story is an example of how sustainable energy can be about more than light bulbs and batteries. Developing new ways to create, disperse and utilize sustainable energy supports the development of families and communities worldwide — in this case, empowering local women and girls with a career path never thought possible….continued”

“If food trucks are about as hipster as one can get, what about a food truck as reimagined through a French lens? Thank the stars for Peugeot, then, as we now know how the French would fry up such a vehicle. In this case, it unfolds like a Micro Machines case and is emblazoned with”Le Bistrot du Lion” signage. Sure, food trucks help keep Austin weird, but this Peugeot keeps alive the notion that when it comes to design, the French exist on a plane several levels beyond weird and to the left. Let’s dive in….

Le Bistrot du Lion is Peugeot’s idea of a cheeky name—Peugeot’s logo is a lion, and it now has its own restaurant!—and the rest of the truck is equally silly, even as it’s eminently practical. Equipped with “everything needed to feed 30 patrons,” the Peugeot truck and its matching trailer pack a collection of standing tables, two grilling plates, four induction burners, and a deep fryer. There’s also a 14.1-cubic-foot refrigerated compartment beneath the floor and a 12.4-cube refrigerator for drinks up top. The trailer, naturally, houses a full-blown professional espresso operation. Up until this point, the Peugeot concept follows fairly common food-truck practices, albeit with a Jenga-like flair and some Euro frippery. Well, prepare for a heavy dose of étrange. The truck gets a 46-inch display and a Focal sound system so that “foodies can watch the chef’s every move” and hear “even the faintest sizzle of food on the stovetop with astounding accuracy.” It doesn’t stop there…continued”

Campbell is inspired by the lines, “Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting so get on your way!””

And the feckless media blacked out his visit – but thanks to Chips, we here at TOD were treated to an A-mazing smorgasbord of pics, videos, speeches, from our First Couple’s visit. “THERE ARE 5,000 licensed food carts in New York, and they’re as much of an urban icon as the MTA’s subway signage or the Chrysler building. Too bad they’re killing the planet. It’s not the food—the grub is OK, if not exactly slimming; it’s the gas generators powering the carts. Most food carts run off a diesel generator that’s designed to run only a few hours. Vendors run them for stretches of up to 14 hours, leading to a high output of greenhouse-gas emissions such as carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, and particulate matter. You can see the smoke with the naked eye, but the hard facts are even more frightening: The research and consulting firm Energy Vision found that each cart produces the same amount of nitrous oxide as 186 cars on the road…A new pilot program between the city and a Queens-based company called MOVE Systems aims to cut down on that pollution by at least 60 percent. For the past year, MOVE has been fine-tuning a new kind of food cart—called the MRV100—that’s powered by a mix of battery-generated electricity and solar energy, instead of dirty gas. The plan calls for getting a fleet of 500 new carts up and running by the summer of 2016, with the first 100 slated to roll out this summer…

….The new MRV100 looks more like a compact, boxy Airstream than a rickshaw. It’s made of stainless steel, has rounded corners, and is about five feet wide by ten feet long. Besides the photovoltaic panels on the roof, the cart has a quieter hybrid compressed natural gas generator that charges an on-board battery, which can power the cart about half the time, giving the generator a break. MOVE plans to issue three different tiers of battery storage, so that a smoothie vendor running an energy-sucking blender can tap into more stored energy than one who’s flipping crêpes. The MRV100 will also be equipped with small Internet-enabled computers featuring GPS and a range of sensors, including for fuel pressure and food temperature…Vendors will still have to shoulder the costs of the compressed natural gas fuel (but not Internet connectivity), but Energy Vision’s report also suggests that running a food cart on grid power could save $5,200 a year in energy charges…continued”

    Good Morning Chips and TOD.

2 Biker Rallies: One White, One Black — One ‘Badass,’ The Other, Just ‘Bad’

…while the black bikers were painted as “underclass criminals who attend the rally to steal and murder,” the white bikers were framed as “exemplars of American Individualism,” whose disregard of the new rules was “celebrated as defiant acts against authority.”

… white bikers fall on a spectrum from benevolent weekend warriors with good day jobs to “misunderstood” but ultimately “likeable” misfits.
In the meantime, black bikers, no matter what they’re actually doing or not doing, are just “bad.”

  54. May 23, 2015 at 11:33 am

Black Lives Do No Matter. Two cops(one black, one white) just got away with killing two black people( a man and a woman). These two people were shot at over 100 times and the judge found them not guilty of manslaughter. Police officers can get away with anything, specially killing black people.. It makes you darn mad.

    • May 23, 2015 at 11:56 am

My fault, it was one cop who was found not guilty by the Judge. !3 cops in total shot at the two black people in that car, over 130 times. Regardless it makes no dam sense. The cop who kill that 12 year old boy Tamir Rice will get off too. And I have no faith in the system at all, not when it comes to black people.

I heard on the radio that this murder cop stood on top of the hood of the car and emptied his gun. They “thought” they heard gun shots being fired from the car so the police pursued the car until it was trapped in an elementary school parking lot. The police opened fire because they said the car advanced towards them (no cameras of course) so they unloaded their weapons on these two people who in fact did not have guns or anything illegal. What happened is they believed the car just backfired. If the people protecting this community is afraid of a car backfiring they need to hire better police.
