    • May 23, 2015 at 7:12 am

πŸ™‚ Morning Mister! My mother is hilarious about it, she voted yes but isn’t sure if she could go to “one of those weddings”. She’s struggling with all this change!

so, when are you going to vote for women’s rights?

      • May 23, 2015 at 7:16 am

i understand the contradiction of her feelings …but she voted on the side of humanity…in time the contradictions will evaporate

        • May 23, 2015 at 7:20 am

I think she represents a lot of people, especially the older generation, on this Prettyfoot. She has her Catholic priest telling her she’ll most likely go to hell if she supports all these advances, the change kind of scares her, but in her heart she knows it’s right.

          Good morning to ya!

Chips, it takes courage to vote your conscience when authority figures are telling you that you’re wrong. Your mother has moral courage–a rare quality in this world. Plus she’s willing to change with the times, which is more than I can say for most people I know and all of the Republican Party. I’ve never met you mom, but I love her. Please tell her that there’s a 71-year old woman in Pennsylvania who’s very proud of her and sends her a virtual hug.

            • May 23, 2015 at 7:42 am

Jackie, I will forward your hug to her, and I can assure you there will be a GINORMOUS one coming back in your direction!

She’s so funny, one of the things that drove her maddest during the campaign was the editorial in the local Catholic newsletter by the parish priest. She wasn’t so much annoyed that he opposes gay marriage, she expected that, but it was that he put gays in quotes through the entire piece – the ‘Gays’ this, the ‘Gays’ that. It was so revealing, he couldn’t bring himself to use the word without the quotes, he no doubt resents its current meaning. It drove her nuts. πŸ™‚

But good on her that she knows her personal reservations should not get in the way of the rights of others. This is a big move for someone in her age group, Catholic and with a brother who was a priest. Congratulations to Ireland; this is incredible. My mom is also one who would not go to “one of those weddings” even though she raised a very liberal child (me), but I hope that she would be like your mom and vote for equality if given a chance. Have a great day and tell your mom thanks.

      question answered…..

      We here in America…abdicate our Power….when we don’t vote…

tell us about the huge organizing effort that it took…to reach out to Irish people all over the world…i am so impressed

      • May 23, 2015 at 7:22 am

It’s fab news, Prettyfoot!! I really was teary-eyed reading all the stories of people traveling from every corner of the world to vote. You’re so right, it’s a lesson to everyone, look on that vote as sacred.

Congratulations to beautiful, enlightened, 21rst century Ireland, which yesterday chose to stand firmly for justice, equality and the future. Would that other countries could be so forward looking.

    • May 23, 2015 at 7:26 am

Morning Jackie! My late Dad came from a county called Donegal in Ireland. We used to tease him mercilessly because every time there was a referendum in Ireland on a social issue – divorce, abortion, etc – Donegal would have the highest ‘no’ vote, it was gobsmackingly conservative. I almost fell off my chair this morning when I read the latest on the count there on gay marriage – it’s at 50-50. My Dad’s smiling down, ‘told ya my people would enter the 21st century ….. eventually!’

Wow, every American should be humbled by what Ireland accomplished. Imagine conservative states like Oklahoma and Texas managing to get 50 percent agreement on gay marriage. I doubt that will happen in this century.

        • May 23, 2015 at 7:39 am

it took a man like Barack Obama to bring out the electorate..
i was naive to think that the changes that he showed us would stick with the Dems and the DNC…the President is about empowering citizens…. the Dems are about empowering themselves…aka…2014 midterms…the TPP

If the change is approved, the Republic of Ireland would become the first country to legalise same-sex marriage through a popular vote.

at last, a claim to furst.

    Why Ireland’s holding a same-sex marriage referendum.

    money(gall) quote

The referendum campaign has been slightly more respectful than some of the deeply divisive and nasty social policy referendums on divorce and abortion in the 1980s and 1990s, but many of the same campaigners are still on the field, particularly on the No side.

The Yes campaign is led by an active, crowdfunded and very effective referendum umbrella group, Yes Equality, and is joined by all of the political parties.

Last night I found out that washing whites and colored clothing together will get you the silent treatment. And apparently while I’m getting the silent treatment I must stay in the living room and not retreat to my man-cave to watch teevee, I must sit there and accept full responsibility for my earth shattering mistake. Also did I mention that they were my clothes that I washed, not the clothes that I wear in public mind you, but just stuff that I wear around the house? And my punishment ended this morning before I left for work when a voice from on high asked me if I wanted to do cheesecake factory for dinner. So to all my gay brothers and sisters that are chomping at the bit to get married, be my guest, but be prepared for the psychological warfare that follows. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
