It also made me think of the video you made that is in a house POTUS is connected to in Ireland. Henry Healy was showing people around and pointed out a video you (Chips) had made. I’ve always wondered what that video was. Would you please post it again? ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’š

Somebody shared a tweet of Irish dancers (no, not the O'Leary onem- ๐Ÿ˜€ ) and sent me off on a search for more, and I saw this OLD article in my meanderings…

Q&A: Drew Lovejoy on Irish Dancing

    May 9, 2012 By Renee Ghert-ZandDance

    file:///C:/Users/Admin/Pictures/Black%20Kids/Drew%20Lovejoy%20-%20Black%20Jewish%20Irish%20dancer.gif
    Image: Courtesy of Madeline Duckworth

Drew Lovejoy proves that you donโ€™t need to be Irish to excel at Irish dancing. Lovejoy, a 17-year-old American biracial Jew, recently won his third consecutive All Irish Dance Championship, the oldest competition in the Irish dance world. He was also the 2010 Irish dance world champion in his age group.

Growing up the only Jewish youngster in Greenville, Ohio, Lovejoy had an unconventional childhood. A profile of Lovejoy in The New York Times published in March brought him a lot of attention, but he said that the piece misrepresented what itโ€™s like to be a Jew, and particularly a Jew of color, in the Irish dance world. He set the record straight and shared more about himself in a recent phone conversation with The Arty Semite.

Renee Ghert-Zand: Can you tell us about your family and your Jewish identity?

Drew Lovejoy: Iโ€™m an only child. My parents divorced when I was very young. My mom is white and Jewish (she converted when I was 4, and I also was converted to Judaism), and my dad is black and Baptist. My mom married my stepfather, my Abba, when I was 9. Iโ€™ve always grown up Jewish, so I consider myself Jewish.

We celebrate all the holidays, and we try to do Shabbat every Friday, but unfortunately my dancing sometimes conflicts with Shabbat. Weโ€™re Reform Jews. Thereโ€™s no temple in our town. We go to synagogue in Cincinnati, which is about two hours away. We keep kosher for Passover and try to eat kosher style when possible. There are no other young Jewish people in my town โ€” there are other Jewish families, but their kids are all in college or older.

/tongue in cheek/ Well, Dakots, he is ‘related’ to POTUS in many ways. I kinda like the fact that his life touches so many different areas, and that he seems quite comfortable in himself.
        xxxxxxxxxx
“The New York Times article gave the impression that it is uncomfortable to be a Jewish Irish dancer, that you have to be circumspect about your Jewish identity. Is that really the case?

DL: What I said got misconstrued. I was trying to say that the Irish would be so excited to know of all the diversity in Irish dance today. I donโ€™t have to hide my Jewishness in the Irish dance world at all. Everyone who knows me knows that Iโ€™m Jewish. I donโ€™t hide it at all. A lot of people are like, โ€œYour Jewish? Dude, thatโ€™s so cool.โ€ And in terms of my being a black Jew, theyโ€™re so surprised. They think Iโ€™m adopted because they havenโ€™t met my dad. They see my Abba and my mom, and they think Iโ€™m adopted, until I explain things to them.

In the Irish dance world Iโ€™m just looked at as Drew Lovejoy. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m so comfortable with it โ€” because theyโ€™ve all made me comfortable about it, and I havenโ€™t had to feel self-conscious.

I just got this email from Reid- I’m really thinking effing Reid. He disrespects the President Obama, by gloating for his NO vote of TPP, and is so proud to have never voted for trade ( though someone here said he voted for NAFTA, and I mean to check.), then this…he sends this!
I do not get how in a global economy, we sit like dinosaurs and don’t do trade deals. Why not get something that levels the playing field, and possibly helps unwind some of this “slave labor” these GLOBAL companies are taking advantage of. I’m just puzzled. I really have to email the democratic leadership. I don’t see have creating space btwn the DP and President Obama helps us “take back the Senate in 2016.” Maybe when the money just dries up, they will see the light?
    **************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Recently, I told my constituents that after 2016 Iโ€™ll be hanging up my gloves and retiring from the Senate.

But I care deeply about what happens in the Senate after Iโ€™m out. When itโ€™s working well, we can achieve great things.

And Iโ€™ve still got a lot of fight left in me, — I hope you do, too. Because weโ€™re going to need it if we want to take back the Senate in 2016.

Will you stand with me in this fight? Please pitch in now to help Democrats take back the Senate. I canโ€™t do this without you.

The consequences of this election couldnโ€™t be more dire. You and I have worked too hard to help get our economy back on track, to get health care coverage for every American, and to help working families. We canโ€™t let the GOP undo our progress.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m supporting Catherine Cortez Masto, the Democrat whoโ€™s running to keep my Nevada Senate seat blue. Itโ€™s why Iโ€™m backing our other great candidates like Ted Strickland in Ohio and Russ Feingold in Wisconsin — both strong Democrats who will bring middle-class values to the Senate.

Because thatโ€™s what this is about — helping the middle class. Regular Americans. Not just the wealthy elite.

Will you join me and help Democrats take back the Senate in 2016? Letโ€™s continue to build the legacy. ( DOES HE MEAN THE LEGACY THAT PBO AND THE O COALITION HELPED BUILD?)

    ‘Does he mean the legacy….’
Although he did use the words ‘continue to build’, I say ask him if you want to be sure.

I like this part [snark] >> ‘both strong Democrats who *will* bring middle-class values to the Senate’. Didn’t two of these names already have a chance to bring mc values into governing?
Oh well, campaigning seems to be the only part of politics in which these guys are consistent.

      “Normalizing polygamy is next”

Really, I’m wondering why this is the go-to argument for homophobes. The Warren Jeffs style polygamy is revolting, because there’s no free will in it. But really, if a group of *consenting* adults want to engage in a polyamorous marriage, then, you know, whatever. (Personally, negotiating the politics of a monogamous relationship is quite sufficient for me, thank you very much.)

Hi vc. Yes I will ask him to kindly STOP dishonoring my President, and all of HIS hard work. The Senate, and the House would have folded like a deck of cards many times with health care. No one has been working harder for the working and middles class than PBO. He’s been out there trying to expand trade, and bring some sanity to our immigration system, and reform to wall street, and pulling us from the brink. I mean I appreciate what those on the hill have done, but this was all mainly on our President’s shoulders. There were a dozen times where he could have pressed for caving into the GOP, or made it know he was available to “triangulate” and sign a BAD deal, but has not.
I will remember his remarkable and extraordinary presidency for not only what he accomplished, but also for what he did NOT cave in and do- and that is to sell us out for his legacy, or for the heck of bipartisanship. He is open to policies that make sense and lift up all of us. Anyway…Great Day for Ireland and for the WORLD. Beautiful memories by these pics
JoJo I saw this when I googled earlier, and also something else that said Reid voted not on NAFTA, but yes on some other trade deals?

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/01/01/1255736/-NAFTA-at-20-An-Unhappy-Birthday-and-a-Look-at-the-Roll-Call-Votes-on-Free-Trade-Deals

NAFTA passed the Senate 61 to 38. Democrats were almost evenly split: 27 YEA, 26 NAY (and 1 not in attendance for the vote). Republicans voted for it by a larger margin: 34 YEA to 12 NAY.

7 of the NAY votes are still in the Senate: 6 D, 1 R.

One of Ireland’s most senior Catholic clerics has called for the Church to take a “reality check” following the country’s overwhelming vote in favour of same-sex marriage.

Diarmuid Martin, the archbishop of Dublin, said the Church in Ireland needed to reconnect with young people.

The referendum found 62% were in favour of changing the constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

The archbishop personally voted “No” arguing that gay rights should be respected “without changing the definition of marriage”.

“I ask myself, most of these young people who voted yes are products of our Catholic school system for 12 years. I’m saying there’s a big challenge there to see how we get across the message of the Church,” he added.

I think it is way past time for Memorial Day to be declared not a ‘holiday’ but a Day Of Service during which ALL Americans find someway, no matter how small, to do something for the families of the fallen – small gestures like mowing their lawn, cooking them a meal, offering tickets to a movie, ……….., whatever.

    Good night TOD.

Chips, you must be proud of Ireland today. I have Irish ancestry on my father’s side, great grandfather from County Mayo, Castlebar. I consider myself a survivor of the horrors of conservative Irish Catholic religious education and it does my heart good to see 2/3 of the people of Ireland reject that inhumane and cruel ideology and the stranglehold it has had on the people of Ireland. I am also a survivor of clergy sexual abuse and the crimes and deceptions of an Irish Catholic monsignor who swept it under the rug and protected the perpetrator from discovery and consequences. Human consciousness is evolving and moving in the direction of loving kindness and compassion.

      I’m so sad to hear that you had to endure that abuse. Hurts my heart. For you and for all the others that came before and after you. Just no words.Like you, I am glad to see movement toward love and compassion…we still have work to be done, but we move in the right direction:) {{{ Bill R,}}}

Yes, in middle age I was able to get therapy to heal the remaining PTSD and confront one of my perpetrators, the other was dead. I am whole and healed in my view. I was a devout young boy who was abused in early adolescence after entering a high school seminary. My trust and innocence were destroyed and I had a suicidal depression at age 21 and had a spontaneous healing in the midst of it. As a resul of that healing I sought out a spiritual teacher who was an English woman and trained Zen master, and that started me on a life long practice of meditative spiritual practice. I went on to have a very good life, a happy marriage and career as a mental health therapist. The residual damage and PTSD symptoms were healed through therapy in my 50s and a therapeutic confrontation with the monk/perpetrator and the abbot of the monastic seminary. The perpetrator was sent off for evaluation and treatment and banned from priestly functions. So it was a long time coming but healing and justice did happen. A letter was sent out to all seminarians inviting them to come forward and receive help and support if they had been abused, and a system of independent advocacy was set up to support them. All this was done as a demand and condition for my not suing the abbey and monastic order. So I felt good that through my injury at a young age, I went on to have a rich life and good marriage, even survive the death of a child. Eventually in my 50s I got training to become a spiritual director and taught meditation spirituality to others, leading retreats and workshops, and when the time was right confronted the monk perpetrator and the institution where I was injured and betrayed, to bring some measure of justice. So I suppose in a way the Irish vote is a validation of the path I have been on, that toxic institutions, and institutional evil can be overcome, spiritual and psychological healing can come to the people, and some measure of justice.

Good Sunday morning everyone! I don’t have to tutor today, nor do I have any plans…so it stands to reason that the dog’s internal alarm clock was not taking this into consideration when she woke me at 5:30am…just like normal, Heavy sigh. I may never be able to “sleep in” again….
