West Wing Reports: Guess How Much Healthcare Could Cost Now?

A report issued Wednesday says that the most recent official projections indicate that the U.S. will spend $2.5 TRILLION LESS on health care from 2014 until 2019 than had been originally estimated at the time the Affordable Care Act became law in 2010. That represents a nearly 11 percent decrease in projected spending, according to the report issued by the Urban Institute, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Russ Britt: Obamacare Making Insurers More Responsive, Efficient: Study

A provision in Obamacare governing spending guidelines for health insurers essentially has forced carriers to become more efficient and responsive, a study released Wednesday finds. The joint study from the Urban Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says minimum requirements in the Affordable Care Act that mandate how much insurers must spend on medical care resulted in savings of

$5 billion for consumers in 2011 and 2012, the first two full years after Obamacare was enacted in March 2010. For 2011 policies, insurers paid $1.1 billion in rebates. By 2012, insurers had adjusted premiums to comply with the new guidelines, though they still ended up paying more than $500 million in rebates. But that adjustment in premiums saved consumers an estimated $3.4 billion, Clemans-Cope says.

Thanks to Obamacare, I no longer worry about health coverage if I suddenly decide to tell my boss to “Take this job and Shove It” .

It is truly a relief to know that one is no longer a slave to a job they may not like just to have medical coverage.

Although when I leave this job, it will be straight into retirement…you never know… 🙂

I think Josh is my favorite WH Press Secretary. I love his attitude, his sensitivity to all subjects, his ability to handle all the jackals with ease. He really never fails to lost sight of what’s important and to keep things on an even keel, despite the chihuahuas nipping at his heels.

      • May 21, 2015 at 5:01 pm

I’ve really, really got to love him too Meta, for exactly the reasons you say. Initially I thought he would be waaaaaay too ‘gentlemanly’ to handle these creeps, but actually that trait has worked perfectly, he brushes off their snark and nastiness and sticks to the issues, and never lets them drag him down. He’s been outstanding.

This, this, THIS, is EVERYTHING! OMG! The truth and his awesome courage is speaking it, especially in this place. I have always admired his work and the little that I knew of him, but this speech has shown me his wonderful heart and spirit. Thanks for posting this. I will be listening to it again and sharing it with others. A voice like his is one that we have long needed., with its reach and prominence, is one that we have long needed in the fight for justice and equality.

Nerdy, our Obamacare reporter, is also a force to pay attention to. Thanks once again for keeping all the good ACA news front and center.

The prosecutor in Ferguson, in New York and everywhere else could have gotten the grand jury to indict the officers if they wanted too.

So she has proved that she is no spring chicken after all. Except for the illegal arrest charge, the grand jury let all the other charges stand. Excellent work by her.

    Just catching up.
Very pleased about the news regarding Cuba/US. Cuban reporters here. Embassies getting close to an opening date. Bravo President Obama.

Also pleased that the TPP moved froward in the Senate.
As I recall 150 House Democrats signed a letter of support. That leaves a wide margin even if there are some defectors. Until this thing is done I doubt the furor will fade.

What will emos whine about after the TPP is done?

Oregon Senate just passed the second big gun sense bill keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. On to the House where it has a reasonable chance of passage. A few Republicans even voted with the Democrats. The tide is turning!

The question by the first Cuban reporter was seeing change staring us in the face! Also thrilled about the indictment of the cops.

Not sure what is going to happen come 2017, but no matter who wins the election I doubt that the WH will ever be as interesting again as it has been under the Obamas. These two have livened up the country! And I do think it is starting to sink in with the electorate as we see more and more of the candidates, and is reflected in PBO’s poll numbers. We have gotten very spoiled with PBO and FLOTUS making every day interesting. But in the meantime, there is more to come as PBO made clear today;-)

Where I think the trillion dollar savings comes from:

    1) Remember the electronic records requirement? Using new technology saves expenses-cheaper record storage/easy comparison of drugs prescribed, saving millions in drug interaction problems, faster diagnosis of probable issues. The doctor can immediately see records at any hospital that is in network while the patient is still in the room. Electronic records are easier to read, meaning fewer mistakes in diagnosis, treatment, or care.
    2) Before O-Care, there was a coverage gap of late-50’s and early 60’s. People with inadequate coverage simply waited and hoped they would live long enough to be covered by Medicare for whatever ailed them. Now they can buy coverage and take care of their issues instead of waiting for Medicare to cover them-so instead of coming to the emergency room in a crisis-they now can opt for less drastic care. Now they can get pills instead of operations, therapy that helps improve the quality of life. Instead of piling on all the costs on Medicare, people can now retire in a much more healthy state than before.
    3) Fewer non-covered care also means hospitals can invest in preventative care, maintenance care,, even home care instead of hospitalization-all money savers.

This shows what can happen when a “conservative” family literally “sells” itself to the public as a role model for others, encourages everybody who watches to buy what they’re hawking, but hides all dark family secrets while condemning others for their so-called “sins.” Once outed themselves, they use God to forgive themselves, but continue to call out others – and in his case, specifically, LGBT people – for eternal damnation. Total hypocrites. And creepy.
