Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family, I hope all is well with everyone this lovely Wednesday morning.

To all, I hope you have an absolutely gorgeous day today. ❤ ❤ ❤

Thank God that President Obama is still the President of The United States of America. ⭐🏆 ⭐🏆 ⭐🏆

What a gorgeous photo to begin the day! So many beautiful, smiling faces and our radiant FLOTUS. Last night’s primary election yielded some sad losers who I thought had a chance. Turnout was disappointingly low, even though Dems were offered some good choices. No matter how much time and effort people expend to wake them up, Democrats stay home in off years.

    • May 20, 2015 at 7:51 am

Oh damn, Jackie – and the ones who stayed at home will, as usual, be the first to complain about their representatives 🙄

      • 10 jackiegrumbacher
        May 20, 2015 at 7:58 am

Exactly, Chips. You will find them bitching about everything, but ask them to take five minutes to vote and they turn away. On days, like this, I’m tempted to chuck it in, but then I know that’s exactly what the opposition wants us to do.

    • 12 Alycee (@jazziz2)
      May 20, 2015 at 9:03 am

Good morning, Jackie! So your turnout was low, too. Our’s was around 10%; a historic low — PATHETIC! Our only bright spot was that on Monday night, two very qualified folks decided to mount a write-in campaign for Borough Council. Needless to say, both got the required 10 votes and so we will have a full slate on the November ballot. The republicans only had candidates for two of the four positions. Both republican candidates are also qualified and volunteer in the community. Unfortunately, one of their candidates may be ineligible due to the Hatch Act. I’m going to call their Chair today, provide her the info so that the person can quietly withdraw. We are a community of 3000 people; this person is one of only about 10 folks who consistently volunteers for Borough activities. Yesterday, when I saw the name on the ballot, my first that was “Which Dem will I not be voting for in November.” This morning, at 4:00 am, I awoke with the thought “Oh, S#!t, the person can’t run in a partisan election…” I was going to ignore it, however, I just reviewed the law and summary sheet; quote on summary sheet “Ignorance of the law is no excuse…”

      • 13 jackiegrumbacher
        May 20, 2015 at 9:17 am

Alycee, we had only 14 percent turnout, which is a disgrace. I don’t know how to knock sense into people. What is so hard about taking a few minutes of your time to decide how you want to be governed? People have endless time to shop and kvetch, but no time to function as citizens. It makes me want to puke.

Good morning, Alycee, Jackie, and all of TOD. I feel your pain. We don’t vote and then we don’t win.

        • 16 Alycee (@jazziz2)
          May 20, 2015 at 10:09 am

The very folks that won’t vote are the same ones burning up my phone with complaints. I’m getting tired of beating my head against the wall. The local elections are just as important, if not moreso, as the Presidential. It pains me that my Borough has morphed from a cohesive, tightly knit community, to a suburban bedroom town…

Swiss bank UBS has paid US authorities a total of $545m (£352m) to settle an investigation into the manipulation of foreign exchange rates.

The total includes a $203m fine after UBS pleaded guilty to a charge it rigged Libor benchmark interest rates.

US and UK authorities are expected to hand out penalties to major banks totalling about $5bn related to the foreign exchange investigation.

Details of these settlements are expected to be announced later.

UBS said it had settled with the US Department of Justice, the US Federal Reserve and the Connecticut Department of Banking.

In 2012, the bank reached a non-prosecution agreement with the US Department of Justice over the Libor scandal.

However, this was revoked by the department. As a result, UBS has agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud, pay the $203m fine and accept a three-year probation period.

I think we’ll be finding many things to be thankful to Eric Holder about over the next several months and years. He left a legacy of true justice behind him.

An addendum to the many remarks above, I offer today’s segment in This is What Propaganda Looks Like:

The NY Times extensive article bidding David Letterman good-bye mentioned the celebrity guests he hosted in his last weeks on air—-Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Bill Murray, Jerry Seinfeld.
Then The Times said that Dave beat Jimmy Fallon’s ratings for the First time 2 weeks ago.

This is the lie by ommission.
What was it that happened 2 weeks ago that brought the record setting ratings?????????????????????????
    The NY Times never said.
But I bet TOD knows the answer to this question, right?

    • 88 Linda
      May 20, 2015 at 9:40 am

The NY Times and the Washington Post are now officially Rags .!

Chris Matthews had on a NYT reporter last night to discuss a story he wrote about some friend of Hillary Clinton. I think the friend was named Blumenthal.

When Chris asked him why he wrote it, the reporter could not answer why because it was a nothing burger.

      • May 20, 2015 at 9:51 am

I think the purpose of the story was twofold: 1) That Blumenthal was secretly advising HRC while she was at the State Department even though he was barred from the State Department by PBO’s administration (he has been rather anti-PBO). 2) That Blumenthal was advising her on Syria while he had business interests there.

If the Obama family was Republican and white, the rightwing would have them on a pedestal higher than the moon. They have all the qualities most Americans profess to want in a presidential family: intelligence, good work ethics, maturity, physical attractiveness, devotion to the family, have great senses of humor and no unsavory behaviors no matter how hard the rightwing tries to invent some. They are very comfortable relating to people from all walks of life. POTUS and FLOTUS did it the American way, working extremely hard pulling themselves up with their bootstraps from modest beginnings. Staunch Republican voters won’t even acknowledge that the Obamas are basically nice and normal people apart from political differences and are convinced they are the most evil people on earth. Totally unhinged from reality.

meta, if you were near me I would give you a Michelle Obama hug, because if you never spoke the truth before you sure did now. You better believe the Obamas have been disrespected and call every name in the book and no Democrats have stood up and publicly object. I will never forget the Republican Congressman talking about FLOTUS butt, and where was Sherrod Brown at then? Where were they when they talked about the Obama daughters? Let someone say something about Hillary’s granddaughter, the Dems would have a dam fit.

Amk i must disagree about the “pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps”. I think PBO &FLOTUS would agree they had help from others like PBO mom, grandma and grandpa, free to low cost tuition based on income, state government loans, government backed student loans, etc. They had to keep up the grads and work hard to accomplish what they achieved. So many RW/GOP use that term but never admit they got state or fed government help too.

😉 😉 Jojo, maybe Amk meant “pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps” in exactly the way the Repubs use the term in relation to themselves! For example, didn’t Paul Ryan pull himself up by his own bootstraps? 😉

Breaking news (no, it really is).

Five of the world’s largest banks are to pay fines totalling $5.7bn (£3.6bn) for manipulating the foreign exchange market, US officials say.

Four of the banks – JPMorgan, Citigroup, Barclays, RBS – have agreed to plead guilty to US criminal charges.

The fifth, UBS, will plead guilty to rigging benchmark interest rates.

Barclays was fined the most, $2.4bn, as it did not join other banks in November to settle investigations by UK, US and Swiss regulators.

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said that “almost every day” for five years from 2007, currency traders used a private electronic chat room to manipulate exchange rates.

Their actions harmed “countless consumers, investors and institutions around the world,” she said.

BWD’s Tweets have been reporting that Israelis have banned Palestinians from riding on their buses in the West Bank. (Ha’eretz had it last night and I mentioned it on TOD when I saw it.)

Not on Israeli Only roads. Not on Israeli Only buses.
Keep expanding settlements and stealing Palestinian lands.
Bulldoze the homes of 100,000 Gazans in the war last summer, Not One of which has been able to rebuild. You do not need a degree in Political Science to conclude that the Israeli aim is the destruction of the Palestinian people.

How much longer will the world, the USA, remain largely silent?
