      She was born 1912, and I bet she never thought she would see a black President and First Lady. Not in her lifetime. What a lovely picture.

    Racism requires power. Totally agree.

    Internalized racism requires only perceived power – like noticing the color of your own skin, falling in love with it, and thinking that gives you power, because you “learned” that point somewhere. Either that or we hate ourselves, and we think if we could just put down the other guy, we’d feel better. Just like all the other -isms that have nothing to do with race or skin color. (I have no learned expertise to write that, and I’m not even sure it’s coherent – just my personal feelings.)

    Love how racist whites have no problem hating darker skin tones, and thus the people wearing them, and don’t want them in their neighborhoods, just as a matter of course ~ but rush off to the tanning salons and the beaches to darken their own skin for beauty’s sake. We humans are a riot. So much that we do makes no sense.

      Not to mention how they are doing all of these things that make their lips more plump and get bigger behinds. Don’t think we AA’s don’t notice these and laugh.

      The young “privileged” white guy at my office came to work the other day – red as a beet. I did a double take and hurried to my desk with tears rolling down my face. /smh

        Oh god that made me laugh so hard! So true. I’m white, but my nickname in my 20s, when I was super thin (nickname courtesy of genes inherited from my old German-ancestry grandma!) used to be “Super Dupa.” #LookItUp #NoCosmeticHelpRequired #ThanksGrandma

      JO’B, the 2nd portion of your comment reminds me of a thought that I often used to ruminate on during much of my young adult years, because it made no sense to me. If blacks were animals, unintelligent, inferior, etc. etc. what did it say about you as a superior, intelligent and more moral being if you had them rearing your children and copulated with them, often by force? The thought always left a sense of disdain in me towards the ‘superiors’.

        Your comment this morning meant a lot to me, NW. I always get a little surprised and then thrilled when someone much younger than my … uh … mature age gives me a thumbs up, to reassure me I’m #StillInTheGame ! At least for today! (Ha – I know I’m still in the game, don’t worry!)

    as I routinely do, I decided to watch some (read any … really) speech of PBO to help me put some common sense back into my head and calm my soul – thanks a lot YouTube;

    this clip is just part of his final campaign speech he gave in Iowa.

    I was surprised to see the number of times PBO uses the word “Champion” to describe the kind of leader this nation needs;

    I remembered that this was the label “the inevitable candidate” used to describe herself in her announcement video;

    I guess when the usual suspects try to claim that this is a new idea (not one generated by PBO) we can use this video as Exhibit A to demonstrate facts;

    I knew the right wing haters was going to have a dam fit about the First Lady speech. But at this point I am fed up with their racism, they have been attacking this First Family over six years.Regardless what she says or do these racists haters fine fault with it. The First Lady could have gotten up there and just said “How are you doing?” And those racists haters would have found fault with that, because it’s not about what she says, it’s about they can not stand that BLACK intelligent, lovely woman.

    The Austrian postal service has started giving its workers dog treats to help them deal with aggressive hounds as they deliver mail.

    The decision to give the 9,000 workers a bag of dog biscuits to take with them each day was made after 47 of them were bitten last year, its spokesman says.

    “Every bite is one bite too many,” Michael Homola told NBC News.

    The Russian and Chinese navies have begun their first joint exercises in the Mediterranean that will last for about a week.

    Though small scale, it is a signal of growing defence ties between Beijing and Moscow and a demonstration that China’s maritime horizons are broadening.

    Two Chinese 054A/Jiangkai II class missile frigates – the Linyi and the Weifang – are involved along with a supply vessel, the Weishanhu.

    Some six Russian ships are also taking part, and the exercises will encompass safety drills, replenishment at sea, escort missions and some live firing.

    The Chinese warships had previously visited the Russian Black sea base of Novorossiysk (another first for the Chinese navy) as part of the Victory in Europe celebrations.

    In the land of “who cares,” here’s The Man Who Shot (at) George Zimmerman:

    Shooter is apparently a turd, but reminds me of this oldie (especially: “a law book was no good”):

  27. 88 globalcitizenlinda

    another thing that irritates me is this :

    libertarians, conservatives and extreme left-wingers shouting loudly about data collection by governments while pretending that private companies are innocent and are on the side of the people as a buffer against “big government”.

    this is especially ridiculous coming from CEOs of ITC companies that exists sorely based on using data collected from people using different platforms;

    I guess the game plan is to make people hate government collection methods so much that these same complaining private companies can then perpetually make money from this same data;

    reminds me of the US Postal Service and how constant abuse from elected officials made the common person hate this lower-cost service so much that their friends in private sector were then able to perfect the USPS models and form companies that are duopolies charging everyone very high prices for the same service.

    these private companies are not even ashamed to contract some of their services back to the same USPS that they insult;

    how gullible can the general public be???

    • 89 jacquelineoboomer
      May 12, 2015 at 12:06 am

      That is one of my biggest pet peeves – the anti-USPS stuff. Then you order something that’s being sent by either FEDEX or UPS (and you’re paying those rates), but is lightweight enough for those carriers to turn it over to the local post office for delivery — all clearly seen after you order it and track the delivery online. Grrrrr.

        May 12, 2015 at 12:30 am

        it is ridiculous yet people buy this crap/nonsense;

        I may be the last person that will be in the lobby of the USPS if and when they decide to totally kill it off;

        I will always choose to use the postal service first – unless there is no USPS service to the destination (really hypothetical) in question

    Okay, would you prefer a company paid holiday to France in a HUGE group or have your salary raised by several thousand dollars(remember that recent incident of a raise to $70 000?

        Egg. sack. lee! With a salary increase I could plan my own vacation, one with a little more elbow space. Can you imagine being forced to eat, move, etc with such a large group and not being able to choose your own ‘down’ time? Wouldn’t be much of a vacation for personalities like mine. πŸ˜€

        Greetings, Theo! I trust everyone in your personal world is doing well.

      Just my opinion, but I can’t stand Bernie Sanders, in spite of his policies. He is a broken record and reputation is annoying to me. What does he know about foreign policy? I usually consider the whole package for candidates running for President. VP Biden is the whole package.

    My usual morning regiment is C-SPAN Washington Journal many of the Times before heading out for the day.
    C-SPAN.org and C-SPAN1 are spending the 1st 45 mins on the Commencement Speech given by FLOTUS…….once again…..Callers, mostly White folks are exposing themselves…….in a typical fashion, they are proving FLOTUS right once again……C-SPAN didn’t bother to air the Speech and now, they are playing pieces of the speech while folks call in.
    Fascinating. I will be docking work this AM. C-SPAN.org now have the Whole Speech.
    I am truly LOVING the way Racists are finally being exposed these days…….

    In USA, there are just two groups that are frequently told to Sit Down, Shut Up and Take It….Always: The African Americans and the Native Americans.
    The Irish, Italians, Jewish people, Treatment of the Japanese Americans during WWII, LGBTQ community, Women, etc, etc are allowed to speak and air their Life experiences publicly and openly. But how dare FLOTUS speak of what she had endured? How dare Pres Obama speak of his life experience in USA?
    Do these people HEAR themselves?
