Didn’t they use that photo for the WCHD with President Obama photoshopped into the fountain at the WH?

    Bringing this over.

    ***

Ok, I believe LP mentioned this a while back, but I thought it would be a good time to refresh everyone’s memory.

Most newspaper sites now require you to register to get a certain number of free articles per month (usually 5 or 10). More than that, and you have to subscribe for some outrageous amount of money. (NYTimes is $5/mo, which is a pretty penny.) How to get around this? DELETE YOUR HISTORY/COOKIES!

Of course, you don’t want to delete everything you have. Most browsers will allow you to delete individual cookies. For example, Ha’aretz allows you 5 free articles a month with your registration. I use Firefox. I went into where I can delete individual cookies, searched for “haaretz”, and presto, deleted everything which showed up. I then went back into haaretz.com, logged in, and hey whaddya know, I had my 5 articles again.

As smart as media thinks it is, we’re smarter.

    • May 7, 2015 at 5:56 pm

As Chips said in the previous thread, you can just switch browsers. A slightly better idea is to have one browser be your “news” browser, and just delete history/cookies as needed.

      LL,

Clearing the history (cache?) on IE and Google Chrome no longer works for nytimes.com.

It used to work, but at the end of last year it stopped allowing access.

Is Firefox free? Since I’m all thumbs when it comes to Tech stuff, I rarely download any programs because if it screws up my computer, I’m screwed. And then there’s the learning curve…

NYT is actually $5 a week, which works out to nearly $300/year, and it’s not unlimited access — there’s a pretty low cap on the number of articles you can view in a week.

      😦

I’m not the only one talking about Scotland getting a second vote – BBC think it’s possible if the SNP gets 50+ seats

    • May 7, 2015 at 6:04 pm

I have no clue how that works, just saw Nicola Sturgeon insisting the other day that there wouldn’t be another vote – but I don’t know what her time-frame is.

Typical RW news guy on the bbc – not letting the labor man talk – allowing the conservative to tell his story. Political pundits the world over.

If the SNP does as well as they are now saying – there will be much discussion of the future of the UK

It is not so likely that there will be another Independence vote any time soon.
But a Win like this strengthens the SNP for the long march toward their goal. “Arc of History, etc.”

It’s just now turning cloudy in SF. We’re supposed to have rain and thunder by 3pm but no sign of that yet. I’m beginning to think this is another head fake, like the last several forecasts………

Watch out for floods – in current climate situation, drought is usually followed by massive flood.

I’m not sure how weather patterns are created, but our rainy season is basically during the Winter months.

Something significant would have to happen for us to get rain before late October-November. We do occasionally get monsoonal rain in August when there’s a tropical storm off the coast of Baja California, but the high pressure system that sits over Las Vegas usually pulls that moisture inland, hence the evening thunderstorms that are regular occurrences in places like Denver CO and Tucson AZ.

A couple of times the sky has opened up and literal sheets of rain came down — about 25 Marchs ago (LL says he wasn’t in the state then) this happened and it was literally impossible to get from the west side of the San Fernando Valley to the east (and vice versa) because the lowest point (in the middle of the Valley) was basically a lake.

If we get any flooding, probably won’t happen until after Halloween.

We have been getting heavy rain through April (Autumn) when traditionally our rainy season is Spring/Summer – things happen!

In the San Gabriel Valley there are dark clouds, muggy, warm winds, this is just crazy weather for May.

Ventura County update at 5pm PDT.

It’s been partly cloudy, with a few fleeting minutes of sun today.

The wind has kicked up, so it’s blustery outside — feels like late Autumn, not May.

Not a hint of rain, though. 😦

Weather.com forecasts 35% of thunderstorms (! can’t remember the last time I’ve heard thunder here) starting at 10 pm.

Near San Pedro where I live, it’s windy and cool; apparently rain is supposed to come 9:30 tonight (100%). We’ll see.

    aloha chips and tod ohana!
just dropping in to say how i love you all and what is always here: superb coverage of the president with amazing photos and salty commentary 🙂
so…. is there some kind of contest, best-of thingy afoot for these 50 states photos? or am i the only one that was trying to pick a favorite?

    • May 7, 2015 at 6:49 pm

Suzanne, Pete Souza has posted his pictures of the President in 49 states. Tomorrow, the President is stopping in South Dakota, the only state he hasn’t visited as President. You can check out all the photos in the link that Chips posted under the photo.

i did look at every one. and i love them all (except maybe the one with just hats and no pbo). after the hawaii photo, my second favorite is north dakota– love that little dancer greeting the president! can’t wait to see how south dakota will be represented.

Hi Susanne, I would like to point out that Pete, photographer genius though he is, messed up – he totally forgot to include the state of Ottawa! Just saying!

          U. S. President Barack Obama (L) talks with Canadian Governor General Michaëlle Jean (R) after arriving in Ottawa, February 19, 2009.

i would love to see a photo array of the different nations that the President visited…i guess i should be frank…i lovvvvvve pics of the President and FLOTUS looking elegant on the world scene and to see the love showered on them…it warms my heart…and nourishes my soul…smilin

                  What a great idea, PF58! I’m with you on the photo array##, and I bet we here could do it “easily” because we have had the TOD Chips-Obama Travel Group cover each trip. 😀 😀 😀 Yes, I do love when the Obamas travel, primarily as you say, because they are such worthy ambassadors AND because they are naturally treated the way they **should** be, with love and respect. {Funny enough though, I should also admit that notwithstanding the love I know they will receive, I do feel a wee bit on edge when they are traveling. Go figure! }

                  ****hint. hint Chips/NerdyW****
##Or maybe we could even have a “Name that country! Name that year!” (or some variant thereof) photo contest . This could possibly be a Spring-Summer feature – example, ONE post with 1/2/3/4/5 pics to be identified once per week [when political ‘business’ is slow], or maybe on the same day each week. You know how TODobots ❤ ❤ ❤ pics of the O's and the O-Admin going about its business!

    GA TODville.

Excited for PBO on the West Coast, Judith, please give the President a hug from me!

Even more excited about PBO in SoDakota tomorrow, though he’ll be closer to Minnesota (Nena, wave to him for me, too) than my cousin in Rapid City SD.

Those of you who tuned into WHPB yesterday would have heard the MSM echo-chamber whining about PBO going to Nike.

Once again, those lazy, overpaid, incapable-of-connecting-the-dots (let alone original thought) will have egg on their collective faces. 😉

President Barack Obama is just too smart for this country with its large dumb and racist population. Knuckledraggers only understand “good” and “bad.” No nuance.

      • May 8, 2015 at 5:58 am

but we sorely needed him for the lessons he has taught us about perseverance….and he has made me a better more aware and active citizen….it is unfortunate that the DEMs want to return to the politics of old….even as they use the president’s rhetoric…and his ass kicking staff in their own campaigns…amazing how they do that while running from the President…i see the Mayor DeBlasio and Sen Warren have teamed up to promote parts of the President’s agenda all the while presenting it like it is new…it is irritating…but like i said…this is the left’s version of ODS

    • May 7, 2015 at 7:53 pm

      From the article..

And, as White House officials view it, engaging with imperfect partners doesn’t reward bad actors but gives incentive for them to turn themselves around, rather than just allying with movement leaders.

“You can cut a climate deal with Denmark, but that doesn’t make a big difference,” said one senior administration official, who requested anonymity to discuss White House thinking before the Friday trip. “You have to talk to China.”

UK pundits are just like their US counterparts – they are not liking that a minority government is possible – parliamentary democracy is based on coalitions when one party does not have an outright majority – the pundits think it just so terrible that the party with the most seats would not be the government – they don’t even understand their own rules – pfffffffft

        • May 7, 2015 at 10:05 pm

BEFORE 2010, hung Parliaments – Parliaments in which no party had a majority of seats – were rare. Now we’re looking at 2 hung parliaments in a row.

Usually, a party – Labour or Tories – won an absolute majority, and formed the government. Now UK is becoming like other parliamentary democracies, where the largest party has to form some sort of coalition with smaller parties to govern.

UK elections are very similar to US congressional elections. 650 separate elections, with the candidate winning the most votes winning the election.
