So now not only are police killing black men en masse, in some cases black men are apparently maiming themselves while in police custody.

Don, the police and Boston officials are throwing stuff at the wall, hoping something will stick and they will be let off the hook in public opinion. I guarantee you that some people will believe a complete fairy tale rather than the truth if it fits their preconceived narrative. I know this because, much to my shame, these people exist in my family.

This type of story is purely there to stop any police being charged – and to give validity to the MASSIVE military overreaction

Is anyone surprised by the actions of the police, hell; the mayor vetoed a bill that called for the police to wear body cameras.

Sadly the mayor of Baltimore seems truly incompetent for her job. I don’t know when the next mayoral election is, but I think we can be pretty sure that this is her last term.

GM everyone – I feel so guilty about my first world problem – why do tradespeople have to arrive at the crack of dawn? Not only that but weeks after they should have been here and on the first really cold days of Autumn. Sigh – tomorrow will not be a good day. I do not do early rising.

Morning, 99ts! Early bird gets the worm:) Early is the BEST time of the day:) Most everyone else is still sleeping/groggy/hungover and you get to go out there in the fresh air and start your day without the bustling crowds! It’s awesome…I have to be at work at 8am…I get up at 5am everyday…I love the quiet in the house and to have my reading time(here!)and my coffee in peace and quiet before the house wakes up….that’s only one of the reasons why I like to greet the day so early….you just need that Positive Mental Attitude to help you along:) Have a great day!

    Good morning again.
I signed off last night as soon as i heard on Rachel that there was going to be another coverup of Police violence. I see that the valiant and incomparable Nerdy kept on fighting the good fight. Freddie Gray did not sever his own spine. The overriding concern for everyone in America should be that our Police force is murdering our children.

    Please read this:
The NY Times, print edition this morning made no mention of the chaos and total mayhem in NYC last night.
The NY Times website has a small item saying “Hundreds demonstrate” LIES LIES LIES Lies of Ommision

If you saw the photos of Union Square you saw 6-10 thousand people. That was only the start. That crowd broke up into at least 6 groups that shut down traffic along the West Side from downtown where I heard the helos until 12:30 and as far north as Times Square where the Police were stymied by groups rushing them from many directions. Wild scuffling was caught on camera but deliberately showing only Small scuffles.

By now many of us see the pattern which is
    1) to provoke a vulnerable population and then punish that population viciously while blaming the whole mess on the victims responsive behavior.
    2) Smother and or ignore the righteous outcry of the citizenry.

I see no way to stop this.

    • 80 jackiegrumbacher
      April 30, 2015 at 9:21 am

That is exactly the pattern, Vicki. The only hope I see is that more people are catching on to it. Not the diehards who won’t ever change their minds, but people of decency and common sense who are finally waking up to the disaster this country has been fomenting for hundreds of years.

      • 81 Vicki
        April 30, 2015 at 9:31 am

The New York Daily News—not usually a people friendly newspaper–has a short video that shows more of the Truth.
It shows the scale and tone of Union Square early in the evening.

As one New Yorker said last night, “This is not a demonstration. This looks like a Revolution.”

Clearly, we need all hands on deck if we are to make any significant changes in the systemic problems inherent in the justice system. So here’s my suggestion, for years we have been subject to people in the academia (especially black intelligencia) and in the media, telling us they know better what POTUS should do to help the marginalized communities. Now would be a good time for each of us to decide what we are going to do – i mean practical things,

For weeks Gray’s family, the people in Baltimore have been looking for some info as to how this happen, and finally what do they get? Gray did it to himself in the back of the van. That is what the police and the union lawyers came up with. In the back of the van Gray damage his spine and crushed his voice box, he did that to himself. B.S. And what about Washington Post they are just as disgusting for putting that B.S. out there.

Good morning Chips and TOD. A very Happy Birthday JG. I hope your day is filled with much joy and happiness.
I am really struggling with this divide in the Democratic Party and I hope soon they get the message that Hillary is not our best choice. I am sick and tired of her already and this election season has just begun. This Clinton /Warren alliance is very disappointing. It was Bill Clinton who pushed NAFTA through. He could have stopped it. Now for Hillary to be against TPP is beyond stupid.

Love the light banter here. It is what keeps me from going bonkers.

    April 30, 2015 at 10:15 am

Some here have suggested that if Hillary is the Democratic nominee that we should get behind her and vote for her because she will be better than any Republican. She might be better than any Republican, but the question is will she build upon what President Obama has created. All of President Obama’s accomplishments could have happened under Bill Clinton if Bill was interested in moving towards a more perfect union. Clintoncare could have happened under Bill if he would have had the political courage to see it through. DADT and DOMA happened on Bill’s watch, again minus any political courage. Healthcare and gay rights are two of the most important pillars of any progressive society, but under Clinton they were tossed to the side in favor of political expediency. Now comes word that Hillary is backing Warren’s play when it comes to TPP, the Clintons have learned nothing since they last roamed the halls of the Whitehouse. But I’m supposed to run down to the nearest voting booth and vote for Hillary, Fuck no I’m not ready for Hillary.

      April 30, 2015 at 10:32 am

    • 171 57andfemale
      April 30, 2015 at 10:34 am

I don’t disagree, Don, but there are some things to discuss. Clintoncare failed because the Democrats in Congress failed. Yes, should Bill have abandoned it after that? That will be a debatable question. Many reasons that Dems didn’t vote in the 1994 midterms was their anger that Dems failed to pass health care.

I have stated repeatedly that the most progressive the Clintons are are on the campaign trail. However, LGBT rights over 20 years ago cannot be compared to where we are now. I always thought DADT was a terrible compromise, but I just don’t think we can look at political attitudes towards LGBT rights of two decades ago through our 2015 lens.

I don’t know how old you are, but there was a strong sense in the early 90’s that the Democratic way of doing things had to be moderated with more “fiscal” responsibility, and a more rightward tilt. This was true even for a good many Democrats. We had deficits out of control, etc. Bill Clinton bridged that gap. What we have learned is that those rightward policies are dead-on wrong for the economy and society, but we really didn’t know that then.

Clinton stood at a point in history when he could have reversed Reagan-era elimination of anti-trust laws and he could have halted the destructive and dangerous alliance of religion (read: religious Right) and government. He put both of those on steroids. A major mistake.

Worse than DOMA and DADT was his collusion with Republicans to deregulate the banks. We are in this mess because of the law that Clinton championed.

People do learn. Times do change and priorities and policies must be adjusted. Is Hillary there? I don’t know yet. I hope her eyes and ears are open and she understands that she also stands to move progressive change in a positive direction, helping her country.

All that being said, your reasons for not wanting (or possibly not voting for) Hillary cannot stand up to what is the most important test: who appoints the next SCOTUS-es and influences the Federal Courts. Literally, nothing else matters. If Al Gore had been POTUS instead of W., we would not have had CU, Hobby Lobby or any other number of horrific decisions. The courts over the next 20 years will decide if we continue to be the America we love – NOTHING is more important than that.

House Republicans try to gut a key American principle

    By Dana Milbank Opinion writer

    April 29 at 6:11 PM

The Civil War era’s 14th Amendment, granting automatic citizenship to any baby born on American soil, is a proud achievement of the Party of Lincoln.

But now House Republicans are talking about abolishing birthright citizenship.

A House Judiciary subcommittee took up the question Wednesday afternoon, prompted by legislation sponsored by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) and 22 other lawmakers that, after nearly 150 years, would end automatic citizenship.

The 14th Amendment, King told the panel, “did not contemplate that anyone who would sneak into the United States and have a baby would have automatic citizenship conferred on them.” Added King, “I’d suggest it’s our job here in this Congress to decide who will be citizens, not someone in a foreign country that can sneak into the United States and have a baby and then go home with the birth certificate.”

It’s no small task to undo a principle, enshrined in the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court, that defines the United States as a nation of immigrants. It’s particularly audacious that House Republicans would undo a century and a half of precedent without amending the Constitution but merely by passing a law to reinterpret the 14th Amendment’s wording in a way that will stop the scourge of “anchor babies” and “birth tourism.”

Judiciary Committee Republicans brought in three experts to testify in support of this extraordinary maneuver (a lone Democratic witness was opposed), and they evidently had to search far and wide for people who would take this view, because they ended up with a bizarre witness: an octogenarian professor from the University of Texas named Lino Graglia.

This would be the Lino Graglia who caused a furor in 1997 when he said that Latinos and African Americans are “not academically competitive with whites” and come from a “culture that seems not to encourage achievement.” He also said at the time that “I don’t know that it’s good for whites to be with the lower classes.”
