    Congrats MP 🙂

    Good morning TOD

    ==============
    Important News

Statement by NSC Spokesperson Bernadette Meehan on the Conclusion of Operation Decisive Storm

The United States welcomes the decision by the Government of Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners to conclude Operation Decisive Storm in Yemen. With this announcement, we look forward to a shift from military operations to the rapid, unconditional resumption of all-party negotiations that allow Yemen to resume an inclusive political transition process as envisioned in the GCC Initiative, the National Dialogue outcomes, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. We also welcome the United Nations continuing to play a vital role in facilitating the political talks and look forward to the United Nations announcing a location for the talks in the very near future.

We strongly urge all Yemeni parties, in particular the Houthis and their supporters, to take this opportunity to return to these negotiations as part of the political dialogue. Having bravely and resolutely sought a democratic political transition, the Yemeni people deserve the opportunity to hold a peaceful debate about their new constitution, to participate in a credible and safe constitutional referendum, and to vote in free and fair national elections.

We commend the commitment of King Salman of Saudi Arabia to provide $274 million in emergency humanitarian relief to Yemen. We also strongly support the commitment of the Government of Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners to facilitate the provision of humanitarian and medical aid to those displaced and injured by the fighting. We look forward to this transition from Operation Decisive Storm significantly increasing the opportunities for international and Yemeni humanitarian organizations to access and deliver assistance to the Yemeni people.

The United States reiterates the obligation of all nations to abide by the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2216 that prohibit the supply of arms or other related materiel to key Houthi leaders, as well as former president Ali Abdallah Saleh, his son, and those acting at their direction. The United States will continue to support efforts to build international cooperation to seek to prevent violations of this resolution, including through enhanced maritime monitoring and inspection by international partners.

At the same time, we will continue to closely monitor terrorist threats posed by al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula and to take action as necessary to disrupt continuing, imminent threats to the United States and our citizens. AQAP and other terrorists have sought to benefit from the deterioration of the political and security situation in Yemen, and we strongly believe it is in the interests of the Yemeni people to unite to confront the shared terrorist threat to their country.

“You’re a woolly mammoth! So unique, you’re technically extinct, but on the bright side scientists hope to be able to clone you some day!”

Though I liked this cartoon I didn’t retweet because I wondered why AstronomyGal is asking @JohnKerry, or PBO, to talk to Scott. Isn’t John, or PBO, busy enough? In a very real sense Scott is more answerable to Florida voters than to either of these men. 🙄

[ 😀 I think this is one reason why I can’t build up my twitter peeps – I take umbrage at little things like this and then am not comfortable retweeting them – don’t want to perpetuate the subtle message. ]

Oh I’m so sure Rick Scott had it on his calendar to meet President Obama at the airport today … or maybe not, because it would have been the first time ol’ ugly-to-the-bone Rick was in the presence of GREATNESS, and he probably would have fainted and slipped and fell and been eaten by a hungry alligator.

      Good times.

Asking for a friend (OK, Mr. Muscatinegal): Do all of the GOP candidates get Secret Service protection? Is it only after they “declare” or are officially nominated? Another GOP waste of taxpayer money… 😦

    • 58 0388jojothecat
      April 22, 2015 at 12:27 pm

I think they get ss protection if they start getting death threats. I believe then senator Obama received it during the primary due to death threats.

      April 22, 2015 at 12:27 pm

      GM Muscatinegal,

I don’t know if the rules have changed since 2007, but when then-Senator Obama got USSS protection, it made the news b/c candidates don’t qualify for protection until they secure their party’s nomination (I think that’s when protection begins). Unfortunately, then-Senator Obama received USSS protection because of the numerous threats against him and his family. 😦

HRC had a detail b/c of her former-FLOTUS status — I think President’s families are protected for 10 years after leaving office.

        Another Bill Clinton mess up.

He changed it to 10 years and 6 months for VP

PBO changed it back to lifetime for Presidents and their families.

        April 22, 2015 at 1:09 pm

Yes……it was so. During Clinton, Congress changed the SS protection rules……it was to start with the next POTUS. After 9-11 and after Pres Obama was elected, sworn in, sometime in the 1st term, Congress changed back the rules to life time protection by the SS for POTUS and his Wife for life time.
        GW Bush was restored……WHY?………Terrorism.

      GM LP,

Such a sad anniversary — those GWB/Cheney/Rumsfeld years were such a nightmare — could not believe that we went to war in Iraq (!) while not providing the “shock and awe” at Tora-Bora.

Rest in peace, Pat Tillman. 😦

      • April 22, 2015 at 12:44 pm

GM, Arapaho! Yeah, everyone in the media conviently forgets we moved ~70% of our assests from Afghanistan to fight GWB’s payback for daddy. God knows where we would be if we would have originally stayed and finished off the actual threat to the U.S. at the time.

          LP,

As usual, a step or two behind everyone else here at TOD, but wanted to thank you for posting those clips from Oberlin and King College Prep on yesterday’s overnight thread.

Looked up King College Prep on Wikipedia, and sadly it says “Hadiya Pendleton was a 15-year-old majorette in King’s marching band who was fatally shot in the back in Chicago on January 29, 2013, about a week after performing at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.”

Didn’t connect the dots before reading Wikipedia — @FLOTUS commencement address might be a bit poignant for this school, but glad to see them once again in the spotlight, for all the right reasons now.

That is the ONLY way…..if effective…..to start the move to get back state house and Congressional Seats OH, MI, PA, WI, NV, NC…….these states where Dem Registration outnumber GOPers.
TX, FL, KY, WVa, AK and VA are states where Dems should win always just with strong Dem Organization. GA and MS where if Dems were to invest every two years, winning the hearts and minds would benefit the Nation greatly. Showing up matters, Dems.

Good Southwest Morning TOD Family and a Happy Earth Day to one and all!

The NAACP adopted a median here and today some of us will go to do maintenance. Not much to do, but will plant some colorful, drought resistant flowers.

Advice Needed: I have to attend a birthday party on Saturday so I’ll be Tvo’ing the Correspondent’s Dinner. Which would y’all recommend is best for the coverage? I usually watch Cspan, but I also will switch around. Thanks!

Hiya Dakota, I’m glad I don’t have to make that choice, cuz I would skip the b’day party or take my laptop with me to the party. But don’t let my bad decision making choices influence you in any way 🙂

Hey Gail! I WISH I could get out of this, but there’s just no way I can. It’s a birthday party for our great friend from Cameroon and while there may be some discussion of African politics and a slim chance the correspondent’s dinner will be on, it will be mostly eating, drinking and dancing. Love African parties, but hate this conflict. Now, what station would you recommend? LOL!

So the contractors of various types including the new furnace who have been in my house off and on since February are apparently now completely done. The picky jerk appraiser from HUD said it looked like a new house, and apologized for putting us through so much work (ya think? Mr. 57 is 75 years old for God’s sake! Why do you think we want a reverse mortgage?!?) We should be closing within the week. Wish us well, TOD family. We’ve been through hell.

And Mr. 57 comes up with the bright idea that now would be a good time to replace our water pipes. Which means moving everything yet again in the basement and tearing down the ceiling that we just repaired, patched and painted.

    a……. NO…………
