Happy Birthday To The Phenomenal Maya Angelou

****

Evelyn Diaz: Remembering Dr. Maya Angelou On Her Birthday

Maya Angelou would have been 87 years old day, and to commemorate her birthday we celebrate everything the author, activist and creative force accomplished in her nearly one century on earth. Though best known for her 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which became the first non-fiction bestseller by a Black woman, Angelou’s talents and achievements run deep. She is a Grammy winner (for Best Spoken Word Album in 1994), a filmmaker (Down in the Delta, her directorial debut at the age of 70), was appointed an American Ambassador by the NAACP and President Barack Obama presented her with the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Every American, every pundit, every member of the media, and every elected official should see these graphs and diagrams showing the #IRANDeal

I noticed a lot of people talk about Iran’s threats to bomb Israel while Ignoring all the threats that Israel and US have leveled against Iran over the years from republicans as well as some democrats.

Hello Chips and ToD! Chips and NW, one of you may want to highlight this article in a post. The charts are amazing and make it very easy to see just what an impact this agreement will have on Iran’s nuclear program.

If, IF, the parties can get to a signed agreement, this may truly change the ME for the better. Rouhani and Zariff seem determined to bring Iran out of isolation. They are reaching out to the world.

As always, so proud of PBO. He was mocked in 2008 for saying he would work with Iran. And what he got was so much better than military force could hope to accomplish. Not sure what we’re going to do without him. And I cannot give enough kudos to his team. I don’t believe that John Kerry would have made as good a president as PBO but he has done an incredible job for President Obama.

Well said, Firefox. The President, his team and the other negotiators were operating out of an evolved mentality that understands the importance of peace and is comfortable with nuance. The detractors are those who know and understand only one tool–war. The future of the world rests with those who aren’t afraid of the hard work it takes to achieve peace. The past belongs to the war mongers.

My heart sings and soars when I think of Maya Angelou. The beautiful long life she led and to know this is also the anniversary of MLK’s death is so heart wrenching. Thank you for both of these posts. We can never forget their legacy.

Nerdy, what a wonderful tribute to Maya Angelou. The pictures show how vibrant and alive she always was. I lived in Pittsburgh in the early 1970’s and saw her give a poetry reading at a college there. She had so much energy and made her poetry come alive. How lucky we are to live in the days of video and recordings of her live performances and interviews. She lives in our minds and hearts and will be an inspiration forever.

They never stop – this President is never allowed to have “time out” by the WHPC – did they talk about GWB every time he went to “the ranch” or Camp David? Did they stir up the hate if GWB had a vacation?

Bob, something really touched me about this photograph and the simplicity of this celebration. I thought about the profusion of candy, cakes, cookies, hams, turkeys and endless excess that I saw today in the grocery store –stuff that Americans seem to need to celebrate a religious holiday. I wonder who might actually be having the more deeply spiritual experience.

Here is the comment. The most pleasing thing for me was what was said about security. Even though we know there’s always security, it felt good to me to get a bit more perspective from someone with boots on the ground.

I am at home (that you lovingly refer to as goose land). 🙂 It is my comment; I was liaising with a friend who is in the UWI Registrar’s office (hallucinating that I could actually beg a ticket in). I really, really would have loved to be in the same room with PBO! She set me straight, but she did chat with me a bit about some of the preparations. In brief, their facility is being used, but they really have had nothing to do with direct presidential security.

                • April 4, 2015 at 9:37 pm

Aaaaaah, okay, I thought you had jetted off to Jamaica without ANY permission from TOD.

                    April 4, 2015 at 9:44 pm

You better believe I’d have jetted off without *prior* permission if I could have been assured a ticket in. 😉 I knew I could easily get absolution after the fact – if I came back with pics AND a report! In truth, that’s why I’ve emailed and spoken to my friend more frequently in the last week or so than I’ve done in years! Ah well! I tried. 😀 😀

                    • April 4, 2015 at 9:46 pm

Keep emailing your friend, and then, once the friendship is spectacularly restored, ask her if you can bring yourself and, oh, 50 blogs pals to visit her. Go on. Do it.

                      April 4, 2015 at 9:54 pm

She can’t even get two tickets for sure – you think she’s going to get 50?

She’s been haranguing me about signing up for Skype (I didn’t tell her I’m having that same discussion with my friend from LA – Hi Gx2). O, and our friendship never needs restoration. It’s one of those woman thing where you don’t see/hear each other for years, yet pick up where you left of last time.

Lucky you! He *is* visiting UWI! I understand he’ll be speaking to a group of young people comprised of young people from JA and the surrounding countries.

    • April 4, 2015 at 9:22 pm

I am so envious. Thought of coming home with an off chance of seeing him, but I gather security is tight. Hope you get a glimpse of President Obama. I have asked our Protocol person here is there is even a slight chance that he might visit Barbados. Answer, no as these visits are usually planned way in advance. Jamaica is lucky.

UWI has a campus at Cave Hill, so I suspect there may be a delegation of young people from there heading to the speech to the young people at UWI, Mona.

Nerdy, you’ve made this Easter eve very special for all of us with your remembrance and tributes to Martin Luther King and May Angelou. There is so much beauty, truth and poetry in both of these posts that we’re all lifted up by them. I feel as if something very important happened at TOD today because of what you did here. Thank you.

A baby Chihuahua named Toudi, may just be the world’s smallest dog at 2.75 inches.

Just 12 weeks old, the pet, who weighs merely 10.5oz, is so small that it can easily fit in his owner’s palm.
