To see the Earth’s ecology forest for its trees, first we have to acknowledge there aren’t many large, intact forests around. In fact, according to a new study published in Science Advances, there are only two such continuous forests left: in South America and Africa, Christian Science Monitor reports. “There are really only two big patches of intact forest left on Earth—the Amazon and the Congo—and they shine out like eyes from the center of the map,” study leader Nick Haddad tells the New Yorker….

…The rest of the wooded areas on Earth are fragmented by everything from roads and man-made developments to natural events such as wildfires, the EPA notes. About 70% of the world’s forested areas are situated within a half-mile of the actual forest edge, per the Monitor. The result of so many fragmented habitats is “ruinous,” notes the New Yorker. This study found that broken-up areas on average lose half their plant and animal species within two decades…continued”

“The White House announced an aggressive plan Friday to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a mounting problem that causes an estimated 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths every year in the United States. The plan lists specific goals to fight the spread of antibiotic-resistant microbes over the next five years. It outlines steps to prevent and contain antibiotic-resistant infections through better surveillance of “superbugs,” to maintain the effectiveness of current and new drugs, and to develop next-generation therapeutics. The much-anticipated plan is part of the Obama administration’s efforts to nearly double the amount of federal spending dedicated to combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Obama’s budget request calls for more than $1.2 billion to combat and prevent antibiotic resistance….continued”

Journalism today in USA is the dumps/pits.
      Fact:
There were: a Bush Senator, Representative, CIA Director, VP, POTUS in 1988, Anointed by Rehnquist in 2000, W Bush…..2 Bush Govs one from TX and one from FL…….etc…..all from One Family.

There has Been One William Jefferson Clinton. He was Gov of AR.
HRC is not a Clinton. She is a Rodhman(sp)
She was a FLOTUS, Senator and SoS.

Now has Eleanor Roosevelt ran and won for any office, they a Dynasty could apply. Teddy and Franklin were Presidents at one time. One of FDR’s 4 sons was a Representative after FDR died.

There was a Johnson Family; son and father were Presidents respectively.

The Kennedy Family is also another family with political Dynasty.

        March 29, 2015 at 4:28 pm

Teddy, Franklin and Eleanor were all Roosevelt.
They both serve at different times…..Teddy served for nearly 8yrs, he finished a term after a death of a President and he was elected one term and FDR was elected 4X.

      • March 29, 2015 at 6:27 pm

“There was a Johnson Family; son and father were Presidents respectively.”

I think this is an error. It’s true two Presidents were named Johnson: Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) and Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969), but I don’t think they were at all related. What’s unique about both is they were VPs who became President following the Assassinations of Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy. May be you are confusing the Adams family with the Johnson family. John Adams was the 2nd President and John Quincy Adams was the 6th President.

          Thank you for the Clarification.
          Yes, Adams…..Not Johnson.
This is what happens when I use just my raw Memory instead of using my fingers for a quick peek at the Google……
          Thanks Nathkatun 😉

          • March 29, 2015 at 7:38 pm

You are most welcome, Nena. Guess what? You are not alone when it comes to relying on your memory. I do that all the time and quite often I get things wrong. By the way, I am not necessarily opposed to the Idea of Presidents coming from the same family. John Adams was a good President. His strong wife, Abigail Adams, was quite exceptional for her time. She spoke up for women’s rights and in strong opposition to slavery. John Quincy Adams, who served only one term as President, was also extraordinary. After he left the presidency, he was was still dedicated to public service. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where served with distinction. For me, my admiration for President/Congressman, John Quincy Adams, has to do with his heroic actions in successfully defending, before the U.S. Supreme Court, the slaves who revolted and took over the slave ship Amsted. I also think that Teddy Roosevelt, the anti-trust, conservationist, and his cousin FDR, who saved the country from the Great Depression, were great Presidents. FDR’s wife, the great humanitarian and principled advocate of equal rights for all would have been a great president. Lastly, I am absolutely convinced that if Robert F. Kennedy, brother of JFK, had not been assassinated, and had been elected President, he would have been a great President.

I agree with all your analysis, Nathkatun.
I am very appreciative for your correction. Another fine reason to ❤ TOD.

Could someone explain what the #BlackBrunchATL is about?

    • 51 Nerdy Wonka
      March 29, 2015 at 5:27 pm

It’s modeled after the civil rights sit ins of the 50s and 60s where Black people protested racism. These brunch protests all around the country serve to raise awareness of the killings of Black men, women, children, teenagers, etc.

““We are closer than ever to holding a Kurdish national conference,” said Önder, adding that Kurdish parties were aware of the importance of a national conference and of alliance.

It is expected that following their meetings the delegation will take messages from the Federal region of Kurdistan to Abdullah Öcalan.”

    And, it’s worth remembering ….

Been paying attention to this fella and he appears to be the real deal ….

      • March 29, 2015 at 6:50 pm

        For instance …

“Q: You mention minorities. Rojava is part of the Middle East, and as everyone in the world knows, minorities are being pushed out against their will. Why is Rojava different from the rest of the Middle East?

A: We have a strategy, and here let me correct you in that we don’t see them as minorities. They are the original people of the area. If the number is small or big it does not matter for us, they have been living with us for hundreds of years. We share our community and our culture with them. With them we improve civilization together. The first civilizations were created in this region; we created them together in Mesopotamia. And we want to establish a real, new and modern project. In our mind we see Mesopotamia as better with diverse people, languages and colors. We see how people have been living for hundreds of years together. If one of the peoples disappears, then this same Mesopotamia will not continue. We want to do the opposite of what the Middle East forced us to do. That earlier project aimed to eliminate the people from their own land. The project was to replace Yezidis, Syriac-Assyrian-Chaldeans, Armenians and others. They wanted to have a one-color nation. We are completely against this. Our project is based on democracy and freedom by encouraging those people to show who they are. I’m asking the people who were forced to leave their lands to come back. We would be very happy if all the Assyrian-Syriacs returned to their lands. Our land is big enough for all of us, we are the wealthiest country in the world. Wealthy not only in resources but in culture.

As you know the mentality of ISIS is over two thousand years old, they want to force our people to do that. We are 180 degrees against that project. The resources that come out of our land are enough for us and the whole world. Many have become wealthy by stealing resources from our land. Until now they are being stolen. They use them to buy weapons which they fight us with. Imagine, we are the owners and we are having our resources taken away from us. We want all the people to live together and share these resources. There is no need to live in other countries and share their bread.”

Suggest all of you read the entire interview …

        ibid.

“Did the UK criminalise Nelson Mandela and the ANC’s resistance against the racist apartheid state of South Africa. Yes, they did.”

Not only the UK, but also the U.S., including President Ronald Reagan and then Wyoming Congressman Dick Cheney.
