What I discovered when I went through the looking glass

A couple of nights ago, as is my wont, I was enjoying a cold cocktail at home and scrolling through my Must Follow Accounts timeline on Twitter. @AngryBlackLady is one of those accounts, and a tweet of hers caught my eye. I opened the conversation, and found that it was one of those odd #whitegenocide people talking about “white race traitors”.

So, feeling in a particularly jovial mood, I tweeted the following:

Well, most of the tweets I received in response were quite supportive. But, of course, some were rather incensed, insisting that “white genocide” WAS a thing. For example, one I received today:

Allow me to wipe my tears of hurt at her calling me a “liberal piece of shit”.

A lot of the tweets I received were loaded with snazzy graphics, listing the perils of “race mixing”. I wondered how they could hold down a job whilst producing such captivating images. I learned that “diversity = white genocide”, and that “racist is the new n-word”.

Whew, lots of education out of one little snarky tweet.

So, consider this an open letter, and my response, as I tend to block nutters on the Tweet-box: You are all fucking insane.

White people are not being slaughtered. White people are not being threatened or going through genocide. To say that assimilation and diversity are tantamount to genocide is a dastardly insult to the peoples who have suffered genocide, real genocide, as in a group in power exterminating them in camps. (Cf. Jews in Europe, Armenians in Turkey, Cambodians under Pol Pot, among others.)

There is no “white genocide”. However, white Europeans have been a tad guilty of genocidal impulses of their own. For example:

1. Exterminating 90% of “savage natives” upon their arrival in the Americas

2. The genocide inflicted on Africans in the Belgian Congo by white Belgian colonialists.

3. The broader genocide of the African slave trade.

And so on.

I’m not trying to lay a guilt trip on my fellow people of European descent. But to say that there is a white genocide currently taking place is to laugh in the face of real genocide, much of it perpetrated by white Europeans. A black family moving into a white neighborhood is not a genocidal event. Your white son dating a black or Asian woman is not race treason. Because you know what? There are no races. The idea that your skin color somehow makes you intrinsically, genetically different from people with different skin color is the greatest canard of our fallen world. It’s what’s used to make you blind to the ways you’re being exploited and used by those—usually of your own “race”—with money and power. The poorest white dirt farmer is exponentially better than a black doctor. Drill that into the farmer’s head, and he won’t bother to look at how those who are above him oppress both him and his black neighbors. There is no such thing as “race mixing”. Unless my biology teachers lied to me, we are all one species. A white woman having sex with a black man is not like a Romulan having sex with a Klingon. Does that sound silly and dismissive? Good, because it should.

Look, I understand. You see your world crumbling around you. You see people of color attaining things that you’re not, and you automatically blame reverse discrimination. You see it as a plot by liberal elites to punish you for centuries of white privilege. You see undeserving people of color getting ahead because of “affirmative action”. You start to see yourself as oppressed.

But if you just stop, breathe, and look around, you’ll see that most people of color are in the same boat as you. They’re not getting ahead. They’re stuck in an economy that is geared towards making the rich richer. But you at least don’t have to worry about being shot by a police officer merely because you look “threatening”. You don’t have people like, well, you mouthing off about niggers and spics and gooks. You may have it hard, but they have it harder. And if you take this moment of self-reflection, you may just come to the realization that “they” are not the enemy. “They” should be your allies. “They” should be the ones with whom you make common cause against the true oppressors and manipulators.

I am, by nature, an optimist. And I know that the vast majority of my fellow white skinned people would be aghast at the stuff one reads at #whitegenocide. But too many of us to some degree internalize some of its memes. We have to stop. We have to think. We have to take action. Otherwise, nothing will ever change.

I know I have always thought the more intermarriages the better. Mixed races might mean less prejudice and feelings of superiority. I am Native American and Irish/German descent. My kids do not have enough blood quantum to be on the Native American rolls. Being a Native American/Irish Catholic woman puts me in a lot of categories that have faced hate from others. My oldest son has married an African American and given me a sweet granddaughter that proudly noticed that PBO is like her with a White and Black parent and that he was born in Hawaii like her. (The idea that she is like him has not hit her.) My youngest daughter married a Jewish man and has given me a sweet little granddaughter. My second son married an Alaskan White woman and given me a granddaughter and grandson that practice equality to all. (I have included Alaskan because the life style is different.) My only single child, a daughter is working Internationally in Germany. So as far as I believe mixed marriages enrich and strengthens families, teaches tolerance and fosters understanding. Maybe I am for Mixing races so they don’t think they are superior to others. I prefer to think of it as blending not Genocide.

I wonder how the Justice Dept. could go about investigating the infamous 47. The petition signing will obligate the department to look into it, but I think it’s going to be almost impossible to actually enforce. I think there should be a lot of publicity about the level of public anger when the finally tally is reached, an announcement that the Justice Dept. will begin investigations, and then a slow tortuous time when these senators are subjected to questioning and the whole thing hangs over their heads like a sword of Damocles, clouding their futures and raising continual doubt about possible personal consequences to themselves. In the meantime, those of us in the states that elected the 47 traitors have got to get to work, especially if they’re up for re-election in 2016. Make them feel the heat. Dog every public appearance with questions about their treason, keep it in the forefront in conversations with voters and in Letters to the Editor, and keep linking their names with the word, “traitor.” We have the collective power to turn the heat up on these senators and we have to use all of that power to make sure no one ever forgets what they’ve done.

JG, I vaguely remember that when a We the People petition reaches a certain tally, that it is forwarded to the President’s staff for consideration…am I in the ballpark?

Then if that is partially correct, then someone in the Administration is monitoring the Petitions or an algorithm monitors and notifies someone.

Someone pipe in here and help me 🙂

    LL:

    Dissenting opinion.

My father was a barely literate “poorest white dirt farmer is exponentially better than a black doctor.”

The reason our family was part of the middle class is because of the government.

Dirt farmers have a place in this world. Because he was a farmer, we always had bounty on our table, laden with vegetables and fruits (we had peaches, pears, apricots, mulberries, loquats and guavas, plus an enormous pecan tree) which were so fresh that hipsters today would die for. If he were still alive now, he would have planted strawberries last month.

My father joined the US Navy at 17 to join many other Americans to wage WWII. He and my mother met in Norfolk VA. He was part of the Pacific theater and was stationed in San Diego after the conclusion of WWII. After he was honorably discharged at age 40, as a “lifer,” he received monthly payments from the US Navy.

My mother was a librarian in the SD County library system.

Both received generous pensions from their government careers, including medical coverage. When they retired, thanks to FDR, social security meant they could continue their middle class lifestyle.

Despite being a barely literate poor white dirt farmer (yes, I am Japanese-American, and became a naturalized American citizen when I was adopted by my white parents), my father recognized the value of education — which, of course, my pubic librarian mother did too.

IMHO, emphasizing that we all live together on spaceship earth (Jerry Brown fav expression in the 1970s) and that a rising tide lifts all boats is a better approach to appealing to the provincial parts of this country. That is why I feel so strongly that free community college is so important for the majority of Americans who don’t have a 4-year college degree.

What a wonderful story, Arapaho. I feel there’s a interesting tale behind it about your adoption that I hope you will share with us another time. I can honestly say that I have never seen or eaten a loquat or a mulberry, but I’ve heard of them and I assume they’re good. I couldn’t agree more with your conclusions. Our planet earth is hurting and it’s going to take all of us working together to save it. If we don’t all wake up soon, it’s going to be too late and all our petty differences will be as inconsequential as dust.

    • March 13, 2015 at 4:55 pm

I didn’t mean to disparage them, merely to indicate that someone who doesn’t have the economic advantages of a doctor might consider himself better than that doctor merely because that doctor is black. That’s what those in power in the South did on a regular basis, to keep poor whites divided from African Americans.

“Crude futures had fallen Thursday after a government report showed surging US stockpiles, adding to a global oversupply.

The US Department of Energy on Wednesday said inventories hit a fresh record high of 448.9 million barrels last week, while stockpiles at the Cushing terminal hub in Oklahoma — the price settlement point for WTI — also increased.”

Thanks so much for this LL, I honestly thought #whitegenocide was a joke when I first saw it, and then assumed it referred to genocide by white folk through the ages. Then my head shook so much it almost fell off on realizing these people are serious.

When racist white peeps declare diversity means white genocide or white genocide is a byproduct of diversity, what they are really talking about is an extremely primitive fear of being “disappeared.” What does it mean to racists to be “disappeared”? It means the MELANIZATION of America. More people are being born with melanin than people without. People are marrying and reproducing with people of their choice and this has led to what one of the characters on BLACK”ISH predicted would happen 10 years down the road. “It doesn’t matter anyway because in 10 years, we’re all gonna be Puerto Rican.” In 20 years or less, the physical characteristics on which white racism is based will disappear in the US population making it difficult to disseminate conflict and division based on the way someone looks. Instiutionalized white racism was an essential economic driver of our capitalist system. Now America and the world is slowly but aggressively chipping away at that old craziness. White racists have failed to adjust to these changes, through housing, education, socialization and employment. The KKKGOP which is the political and policy arm of white racism have promised these poor souls that they will bring back the good ole days through legislation, e.g. gerrymandering, voter suppression, voter intimidation, media manipulation, and the killing and/or incarceration of men of color, especially young African American men between the ages of 12 and 25 years. So let me get back to the melanization of America. Evolution teaches us that species choose those characteristics that increase its survival relative to changing environmental conditions. So we have a huge hole in the ozone layer increasing penetration of the sun’s rays along with rising temperatures. There has been an increase in skin cancer which is much more prevalent in people without melanin, e.g. white people. Even though people of color get skin cancer. It is extremely rare although more deadly because it is diagnosed later. My point is white people who choose reproductive partners of color may unconscioulsy do so to increase the survival of their offspring. This is probably one of the most fun and best ways to eliminate racism. AA peeps who look like me and Europeans who look like my husband will be a thing of the past. No it doesn’t mean dark melanin people will disappear or those with very little melanin. I’m just saying in the future, most people will be a combination of the three racial categories and I consider this a good thing. Melanin will be an even more desirable physical characteristic (even more so than today) because, aside from its beauty, it increases the likelihood of human survival. Underneath the SAE racist rant is this primitive fear. The fear of being “disappeared.” We need to expose this primtitive fear and show how it is connected to racist behavior as well as the racist narratives and policies articulated and diseeminated by the KKKGOP and the mainstream media.

      idon,
Thank you. You say what I think and what I have been feeling for a long time.
I saw this beautiful lovely dark skin sister the other day.
And she literally just took my breath away because her skin was so rich, so permanent, so deep.
I made a mental thought to remind myself to look up the definition of “melanin”……again for the one millionth time in my life.

As a child I never understood why my skin skin color was so offensive to people who tanned theirs?
You affirmed what I have always k own to be true, the fear factor is ignorance or lack of knowledge.
When I saw the sign the protestors were holding up at the UO which said, “Diversity=white genocide.”
I saw “fear” and that is a dangerous mix when there is no LOVE, PEACE, HUMILITY, PATIENCE, LONG SUFFERING, JOY.
I posted on a previous post civilization was created in Africa.
We are not “minority.” There has always been more people of color on earth than any other.
I am so grateful that my parents did not leave that task for the school system to teach us.
We were taught truth so that we could tolerate other people’s ignorance.
Most importantly, despite of the Jim Crow Era they find not teach us hate.

It’s already a melanin-rich planet. 85% of world pop are people of color. This is the level fear among white cops in local police departments.
