      What Lindsay didn’t add, JOB, is that he’s very good at sending telegrams. Somewhere in DC is an old guy hunched over a telegraph machine tapping out Lindsay’s messages every day and there’s a young man with a cap and a trim uniform who’s always read to deliver his messages straight to the receiver’s front door. It works like a charm, unlike those messy, time consuming things called e-mails. Did I mention he has his own mimeograph machine in his office? No high falutin xerox for him!

      I’m not technically “in favor of” (not that anybody asked me) International Women’s Day. I believe EVERY day is a woman’s day. To me, it’s kinda like saying the other 364 days are International Men’s Days – Ha – although I’d include them in all 365.

      But, to keep up with the spirit of the thing, I searched out our President’s proclamation for the month and day:

      “As a Nation, we must join our voices with the chorus of history and push forward with unyielding faith to forge a more equal society for all our daughters and granddaughters — one where a woman’s potential is limited only by the size of her dreams and the power of her imagination.”

            As you and I both know, JOB, it takes a strong man to accept and acknowledge a strong woman. Those who refuse to acknowledge this or try putting legal/societal restrictions on women are showing the world that they are weak men. The terrorists groups, ISIL and Boko Haram, as well as the Taliban, are composed of very weak men who try to disguise that weakness under a veneer of cruelty and bravado.

        Kurdish women soldiers remind me of all the women who had to fight in every war since the world began–those who took up a weapon to defend their homes and their land and their children in every country, including this one. Now at least our fighting women get official recognition, promotions, medals and prestige. But just because it wasn’t formalized and official in the old days doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

      Well actually…he never believed in a 2-state solution…he has always seized Palestinian land for the settlers…he is just coming clean now…he has nothing to lose….despite his blatant disrespect for the President and the citizens of our country he came to America to undermine our Foreign Policy and beat the drums for war….earlier he committed war Crimes in GAZA….he feels that he can do these things without impunity because our leaders keep saying that our alliance cannot be broken…even so i feel Israel has to held accountable…that there should be some kind penalty….

      Netanyahu never believed in a 2-state solution…now the question is…where does America go from here…and what is the fate of the Palestinian people….what hope do they have of freedom….and humanity…will the world abandon them…what penalties will america face from the extremists who will use our alliance with Israel against us

      Where will the US stand when the UN tries to levy consequences to Israel for its war crimes….

      this will be a fine line that our President will have to navigate…May the creator grant him the wisdom he will need…

        This should not fall on American presidents shoulders and especially PBO’s. The UN made this mess and all of the UN members need to fix it. The UN needs to make Israel remove settlements and restore land to the Palistenians.

    After yesterday’s moving ceremony, I was totally wiped out from emotion and did nothing the rest of the day. I am finally where I needed to be yesterday in the chore department. Thank you Chips and Nerdy for the amazing coverage of Selma’s 50 year anniversary.

    A few threads back there was a post of Michelle and Barack recalling their first meal out together reminding me of Xmas 2013 in Chicago with my daughter and husband, the first for them as man and wife. They treated me with a tour of the city based on my love for Barack Obama. They both voted for him too, but knew of my obsessive involvement in the campaigns. They took me past his home and his infamous neighbors he “palled” around with, the area he shared an ice cream with Michelle, to the art museum they saw on their date and even lunch there too. We also toured my son-in-law’s law school where PBO taught constitutional law and all of the sites marked within it. I felt they had outdone themselves providing me the best tour ever of Chicago.

      What a lovely, lovely gift, OG. I lived in Chicago for five years in the late sixties, early 70’s, so I never knew how significant so many sites would be. Would love to take similar tour with modern day awareness. Obviously your daughter and SIL think the world of you.

        This was the part of the quote that bothered me – “It’s fabulous. I’m magnetic. They can’t stay away from me.” It shows such utter disrespect for the constituents in question, yet it’s consistent with his behaviour as seen over and over. I honestly do not understand why anyone, other than his buddies, would vote for him.

At this point, I think some delusion of grandeur has totally warped what brain and humanity this excuse for a human being had left.       Statewide referendum……to call for how Voting is conducted in US…..including how the Districts are drawn, how to fund campaigns, how long elections are to last, and on what days elections are to take place.

      USA citizens….We The People are so Lazy to Map out how our elections should be ran.
      We Lack basic knowledge of how powerful……Citizens can be especially in the age of Social Media….and Internet Accessibility.

        Oregon is pointing the way in many respects. Our legislature just passed motor voter registration. If you get a driver’s license you are automatically registered to vote. An additional 300k are expected to be registered in Oregon, a low population state. Vote by mail continues to be a huge success. Even in this last election where participation was 33% nationwide, we had 62% in Oregon.

    What a gift to have TOD, always and everyday, and these last few days with the commemoration and celebration of #SELMA50. I loved jaquelineoboomer’s poem, and all the tweets, pictures, words, and videos. It means so much to have this to read and see for myself, and to have it to share so easily, on FB and twitter. RT is my middle name, today as well — means so much to share these moments and all this truth. Chipsticks, I count on TOD every single day, and can’t imagine the world without it, but this has been a time of deeper awareness of how much good goes out into the world from this site, from this community, tweets and pix and cartoons and video and commentary. This is the beloved community, here and now.     Second Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln

    SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1865

    Fellow-Countrymen:

    At this second appearing to take the oath of the Presidential office there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. Then a statement somewhat in detail of a course to be pursued seemed fitting and proper. Now, at the expiration of four years, during which public declarations have been constantly called forth on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention and engrosses the energies of the nation, little that is new could be presented. The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself, and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all. With high hope for the future, no prediction in regard to it is ventured.

    On the occasion corresponding to this four years ago all thoughts were anxiously directed to an impending civil war. All dreaded it, all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place, devoted altogether to saving the Union without war, insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war–seeking to dissolve the Union and divide effects by negotiation. Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came.

    One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union even by war, while the Government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it. Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with or even before the conflict itself should cease. Each looked for an easier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding. Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. “Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh.” If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.”

    With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.
