Early Bird Chat

On This Day – Pete Souza: “The President was walking back to the Oval Office when he encountered his daughters, Malia and Sasha, after they had returned home from school.” March 5, 2009

(A blurry pic, only a teeny version of it appeared because Malia and Sasha were so young, but it’s so lovely I had to post it).

Chips, Sorry to hear about your friend passing, I don’t know which thread it was on I missed so many, but I read the comments just hadn’t made one. Glad you are back and take care of yourself. Those pic of Danny your showed with the snow and rain were great. He is such a beautiful Lab and a stinker from what I can tell. He reminds me so much of my Son’s Clara & Kaydee. They were the same way as growing pups.
Hve a good day, I am going to catch up on the last thread.

    • March 5, 2015 at 7:27 am

Thanks so much Roberta, you’re very kind.

I think Danny has had enough of the snow, he still loves playing in it, but has NO patience for it blowing in to his eyes – he even barked at it in annoyance the other day, but funnily enough that didn’t stop it 🙂

Morning all. Snow is heavy today, but I refuse to get cabin fever. I’m thinking of bundling up and trying to walk in it. Maybe if I bark at it like Danny does it will ease up. Hope everyone has a great day, especially our First Family.

So this morning my computer forgot all my cookies during the night and didn’t open on my homepage. Then WP didn’t recognize me and now I have to re-enter passwords for everything from FB to Twitter. The day can only get better from here.

    • March 5, 2015 at 7:46 am

Ugh, hate when that happens. And I still can’t remember my password for my passwords-storing app, so when I’m locked out of something it’s usually forever. In fact, if there’s no Rise and Shine, that’ll be what happened.

        March 5, 2015 at 7:58 am

I would never remember anything if it weren’t for my secret code book–‘secret’ because it says address book on the cover and has a brightly colored 1950’s style woman talking on an old fashioned phone. My husband got it for me years ago to store passwords. I would be 100 percent lost without it and would have to invent a new identity every day. The idea of a password storing app gives me chills.

To this day I refuse to call National Airport here in DC Reagan Airport…I Will Not Do It. I can’t think a single person I know here in this area who ever refers to it as that.

I’ve mentioned before that I live a stone’s throw from the Reagan Library, and must travel by it on many days.

I am surrounded by so many things named Reagan, but locals never refer to those things with his name (e.g., everyone calls the 101/170 Fwys the Hollywood area the “Hollywood” Freeway (you kind of have to here — the highway numbers change names in the LA area, so confusing to non-locals), but I’m happy to report that only traffic reporters refer to the 118 Fwy as the “Ronald Reagan Freeway.”

One of my former managers lived in Orange County and traveled regularly to Orlando — she called her trips there the GOP trips (she left from John Wayne/Orange County and changed planes in Houston at the George Bush airport).

  10. March 5, 2015 at 7:57 am

I love that picture of President Obama with his lovely daughters. You can take or not take this sharing: I dreamed about my daughter when I was 5 years old. My best kindergarten to 2nd grade friend “has” the most beautiful name I had ever announced from my libs.

She also had Sikkelcelanemie, which a lot of young brothers and sisters had back in the day. She passed way that summer. I knew what my daughter’s name was going to be if I had one.

Bingo, I did and you know she reminds me so much of by best partner. Love Ya Girl. ❤ ✩ 🙂

RanMan, this is so unbelievably sweet and touching. I’ll bet your daughter carries her name with pride and love. How wonderful that you see your friend in her. Maybe that friend is actually looking after her somewhere–I hope so.

      • March 5, 2015 at 8:31 am

Jackie, thank you. From the day she was born until now and she’s 21. When she was 13 years old and we took a trip to NY for a week, I told her about my best bud and where her name came from. Of course I was crying like a baby. I’m shedding tears now. Thanks again>> Agape ❤

So sad to hear about a vibrant life which ended far too soon.

How wonderful that your best friend lives on in your daughter, who must burst with pride, knowing that her name is so meaningful to so many people (not just your family and your BBF’s family, but to the community of those who know the pain and suffering of such a terrible disease).

Every day in every way, Christie is showing himself to be a crook, pure and simple. New Jersey is paying mightily for their mistake in re-electing him. He still has over two year to wreak damage on the state, which is going to require a Democratic governor to fix. I hope New Jerseyites never again experiment with a Republican governor. It’s like willingly choosing to swallow poison.

We’re out of school again today……the fourth day this semester. Hasn’t happened in at least a decade. However, the sun is out, the snow will be melted by early afternoon. We’re fortunate that way….we get snow, but it doesn’t hang around for weeks. We have lots of sun, and it goes into the earth……good for grass, flowers, shrubs and the aquifer.

      March 5, 2015 at 10:00 am

      A couple of observations.

The article linked to in this tweet is almost a year old (May 5, 2014).

The tweet is highly incendiary because it sounds as if the sale of Confederate Flags is now illegal in California (it is not). The ban on the sale of a part of US History would be an egregious infringement on the First Amendment, which would be troubling.

This bill banned the sale of Confederate Flags by the State of California and its agencies and affiliates, which is entirely appropriate.

This tweet made neither of these circumstances clear.

I need to give a shout out to NW for giving me my “just what the doctor ordered” naughty mat moment yesterday. I hadn’t been able to really sleep for almost a week and since the meds gave me relief I went down for a nap at around 3 yesterday and didn’t wake up until midnight. The Count von Knowller has been reporting since dawn about the weather in DC. Now, I believe he is pissed. He is lonely. No playground at the WHPC and no friends to play with. His anger is directed against The Voice for closing the daycare center.

    • 64 Allison
      March 5, 2015 at 8:51 am

Good Morning TOD!! NCLB you are so funny!! I’m sure The Voice is exceedingly happy he doesn’t have to interact with the vultures today!!

      • March 5, 2015 at 9:24 am

Good Morning Allison and Linda. After these two days, Josh Earnest must be happy to have a break. Can you imagine the sustained back-and-forth about HRC’s e-mail that would take place today, after HRC requested that the State Department make them available? There would be so many “why this”, “why that”, “how come the WH this”, “how come the WH that” questions. I bet Count von Knowller himself had a long sheet drawn in the middle of the night of gotta questions to bring up today. That’s why he is disappointed that the “inclement weather” has cancelled the meeting. Hence, the “daily WH press briefing is deemed non-essential”.

        • 66 arapaho415
          March 5, 2015 at 10:12 am

The WHPC is getting worse, which I could not believe was possible.

I listened with half an ear to yesterday’s WHPB, and at least 75% of the questions asked the same thing Obama! (is somehow responsible for HRC’s blindingly stupid hubris) HRC emails!, with each questioner more abusive than the previous “reporter.”

WHPC needs a thorough cleansing, replaced by real reporters with field reporting experience, not ones who get paid handsomely for embellishing the gossip-of-the-day.

    • March 5, 2015 at 8:54 am

Sorry to hear of the mid-winter conditions in many part of the US today. 😦

Thanks TOD for the reminder that Daylight Saving Time returns this weekend — since the time changes moved from the last weekend in March and first weekend in November, I’m always caught off guard).

For the snowbound among us (take care, JackieG, not to slip on the ice!), here’s some pics to warm you up.

Because of space limitations, wasn’t able to get Conan’s entire quote into the tweet, which is my apprehension about US influence on Cuba (think Havana’s gonna become Las Vegas East):
“I’m talking in front of all these old buildings and I said it’s a little bittersweet because in three years that’s going to be a Lululemon, that’s going to be three Foot Lockers, one on top of the other, that’s going to be a Burger King.”

Conan is absolutely right about the dangers of commercialism to Cuba if it doesn’t put a tight lid on this stuff from the start. Everything that makes Cuba special and memorable will be destroyed by the invasion of the big guys with money.

You can’t make this stuff up: I am planning how to get to work today to avoid the house that is being moved. It’s been sitting in a parking lot of a defunct grocery store since the fall -a half block from where I work. It was set to be demolished, some guy bought it for $10 and it’s been sitting in this parking lot. They are moving it through the city streets of Evanston, IL today on three flatbed trucks. Joy!

    • March 5, 2015 at 9:22 am

      • 88 japa21
        March 5, 2015 at 9:32 am

Happens all the time. There is even a TV show which all it does is follow the moving of houses. It is actually quite fascinating how they do it.

      • 90 57andfemale
        March 5, 2015 at 11:57 am

Cut into three sections, on three flatbeds, moving through busy but narrow streets. On a workday? Seriously? The guy bought the house for ten bucks. Pay to have it moved on a Sunday!

    • 93 jackiegrumbacher
      March 5, 2015 at 9:23 am

Good luck. And how nice of them to move the house during rush hour. There should be some ordinance against that.

      • 94 57andfemale
        March 5, 2015 at 11:59 am

They started at 6:00 a.m. There is a tight turn from one major street to another. They started that turn at about 7:30 a.m. It took over an hour for the three flatbeds to make the turn. They were moving at approximately one mile/hour. Stupid.

The estimate is it will cost this guy $85,000 to move it and reattach the pieces together. He couldn’t have coughed up another $10,000 and done this on a Sunday? Trust me, there isn’t a house in that area that sells for under $400,000. It’s a bargain. It was a historically significant house – Frank Lloyd Wright style.

4 women arrested in Ferguson last night for being in the street in front of the Police Department.

I guess they didn’t like their ” manner of walking ” in the street.

    also

While Holder was criticizing the Ferguson police, St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch was criticizing Holder. The prosecutor, who basically served as Darren Wilson’s defense attorney during Wilson’s grand jury proceedings, took umbrage with the leaks that came out from the report before its release and the fact that Holder said a bunch of mean things about the Ferguson PD.

“The only pattern and practice I can talk about is the pattern and practice of the Department of Justice of leaking information to the media. [No one is saying] there haven’t been instances of racial profiling and other profiling, but to suggest that somehow it’s all that goes on out there in fact does a great disservice to everybody.”

If it became law, the “Secret Science” bill would prohibit the EPA from using science that includes private data, or data that can’t be easily reproduced. Bill sponsor Lamar Smith (R-TX) says this would stop “hidden and flawed” science from being the basis of EPA regulations, though many scientific organizations have disagreed with the characterization of their data.

America is a fearful and gullible nation with a media misinformation machine that is more than happy to stoke our anxieties. Like windup toys, we obediently point in whatever direction the fearmongers tell us to and run, screaming and flailing our arms while demanding that someone do something about it. Many of these false social panics have done horrible and lasting damage, often long after the country has seemed to come to its senses.
