Judith–Your grandpa’s an amazing man. I won’t ask why he chose to do this on his roof, it’s just jaw-dropping to see at any age.

He did it on every decade birthday. After the first one, it became a tradition and a personal challenge. He didn’t make it to 100. We were planning his centennial birthday when he had a stroke after mowing the lawn at age 99 and a half. My niece was born on what would have been his 100th birthday. Felt like the circle of life was closed in a beautiful way.

Judith, I’m sorry he didn’t make his centennial, but how wonderful that a new child was born on his birthday. You obviously have a very close and loving family and your grandfather surely played a big role in making that happen.

I am glad that we are sending Susan Rice and Samantha Power to AIPAC.
I call this “putting our best foot forward.”

For reasons I don’t understand, BWD is calling the Administration “losers” for sending such highly placed representatives to this conference.

How would boycotting or dissing AIPAC help anything out? AIPAC says it wasn’t consulted about Bibi’s sneaky plan to embarass PBO and unless there is evidence to the contrary, I will take AIPAC at its word.

If I am missing something I am sure TOD will set me straight.

    • February 26, 2015 at 1:33 pm

Dissing AIPAC would be cutting our nose off to spite our face. Our President is the only adult in the room and consistently acts like one.

    • February 26, 2015 at 1:45 pm

I posted this on an earlier thread but want to make sure anyone who is interested in seeing the brilliance of Susan Rice has a chance to view. This is her interview on Charlie Rose from Monday night:

She would make a GREAT POTUS.

Meta, this is the first time I’ve had the time to see the whole interview and not just snippets. Susan Rice is absolutely brilliant and she sets out the truth, line by line, issue by issue. I love the way she wouldn’t allow herself to be interrupted or distracted until she made her points.

        • February 26, 2015 at 5:07 pm

I really think she’s fabulous. I remember her from very early in the 2008 campaign when PBO used to have foreign policy forums, a real first for people to have a close up view of his ideas and attitudes about important issues and those he chose with whom to discuss the important issues of the day. She was then and is now absolutely STELLAR!

I heard Rahm’s challenger this morning on the tee vee. Not at all impressed. He reminded me of a Republican, the way he dodged questions and only got out his talking points. The questions should have been expected and he’d better have some answers. I expected to be much more impressed.

    • February 26, 2015 at 1:57 pm

Well, I hope Rahm has learned his lesson too. He has been governing like a Republican IMO.

      • 79 Don
        February 26, 2015 at 2:01 pm

Jackie, Rahm should have learned his lesson already. How do you sit at the knee of the master and not learn a goddamn thing.

        February 26, 2015 at 2:02 pm

Oh, he’s awful. I never expected to love him, but I thought he would be a decent administrator. He’s been a real disappointment. I really want to like Garcia, but I was taken aback at his ineptitude today. I’m hoping at the very least that if Rahm pulls it out, he understands that we want some progressive policies in this city. Pay attention to the neighborhoods, stop funneling money to damned sports stadiums, and pay your librarians a decent wage and let them fill vacancies. the corruption charges? I’ve lived in Chicago 43 years – he pales compared to Daley. But that is not the bar we should set. I was hoping my choice would be made easier than what I saw this morning.

        • February 26, 2015 at 2:05 pm

As Don pointed out, he should have learned from the master, our President, but failed miserably.

            February 26, 2015 at 3:10 pm

I hope PBO does not campaign for him again. I know he didn’t want to prioritize ACA, but his silence on it was horrific. PBO should not help him if his own former Chief of Staff couldn’t help Chicagoans to sign up for health care.

This is how we get the slimy Mark Kirk and the sociopath Rauner in office: because our Democrats in PBO’s own state and home town won’t be behind his successes and policies.

        February 26, 2015 at 2:24 pm

Yes, Don. I think the AIPAC moves were the same.
Lots of talk in the media about PBO not sending anyone to AIPAC presumably because he is angry about Bibi the warmonger.
Instead, POTUS sends 2 highly accomplished women he is very close to.
This isolates Bibi and reassures Israel about exactly who and what the cause of the Rift is.

According to Laura Rozen, Reid and McConnell will meet with Bibi after his speech.

It is impossible for Democrats to show fidelity to a black man let alone the first black President of the United States of America. This is a bunch of bullshit, how on earth does a foreign head of state get to blatantly disrespect the first black President of the United States in broad daylight and then get a private meeting with the heads of the Senate?

    • 89 57andfemale
      February 26, 2015 at 3:12 pm

Harry has always been one step forward, two steps back. That the Dems missed a golden opportunity to turn this on Boehner is shocking to me. But there will be our Democratic leaders – standing with Boehner and Bibi and not with their POTUS.

The picture of President Obama leaning back in his chair and smiling, further up on this blog, and on twitter, is one of the things that makes RWNJs so angry……he should NOT be smiling. He should not be calm. He should be angry, sad, disappointed…..they themselves are always angry and disgusted, so they cannot stand it that he is not that way. The happier he is, the angrier they become…..and the less they can see and the less they can accomplish.
I watched the video of Jon Stewart’s Monday night broadcast, and he pointed out that the right just stays angry and upset and mean. Then I saw this picture of PBO, and realized, his smile drives them totally crazy. WHY won’t he be angry and mean!!! We are. This smile of his messes with their minds more than anything else.

Former St. Louis police chief resigns as Nixon’s public safety chief after six months

JEFFERSON CITY • The public safety director named by Gov. Jay Nixon in the aftermath of the violence in Ferguson announced his resignation Wednesday, just a month after the Missouri Senate confirmed his nomination.

Dan Isom, who formerly was St. Louis police chief, said in a statement issued by Nixon’s office that he was eager to return to the University of Missouri-St. Louis teaching spot from which the governor recruited him six months before.

State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, who was Senate sponsor of Isom’s nomination, said Wednesday that she believed there had been friction between Nixon’s office and Isom over how unrest in Ferguson was handled.

“They should have known he wasn’t going to be a poster child,” Nasheed said. She said that Isom “wanted to see some reform and it just fell on deaf ears.”

Isom declined to comment Wednesday night.

Yup. We had a good 6 inches here in Chicago and I work close to Lake Michigan. The good news: the sun is now out. The bad news: temperatures a plummeting, the north wind is fierce, and they’re tearing up the street by work so I will have the joy of walking through frozen slush/mud to get to my car. no warm-up in sight. It it gets close to freezing, there’s more snow or sleet and snow in the forecoast for the next week.

        Lou Rawls, “Dead End Street”

        Dead End Street (1967)
I was born in a city the called the ‘Windy City’
And they call it the ‘Windy City’ because of the ‘Hawk’. All mighty Hawk
Talking about Mr. Wind kind of mean around winter time
I happen to live on a street that was a dead-end street
There was nothing to block or buffer the wind, the elements
Keep them from knocking my pad down, Jim I mean really socking it to me
And the boiler would bust and the heat was gone
I would have to get fully dressed before I could go the bed
Put everything on but my goulashes cause they had buckles on them
And my folks didn’t play that said don’t you be getting up in there with
Buckles on them goulashes and tear up my bed clothes but I was fortunate
As soon as I was big enough to get a job save me enough money to buy me a ticket I split

It’s bad enough here, but Chicago is obviously worse! So done with it!

And be careful out there – driving and slushing through the snow to your car! Yuck. SO GLAD I live in retirementland now, because I lived mostly in NJ during my career and I remember all kinds of wild rides on snow and ice, to and from work.
