This is great news and a big milestone for Swarthmore. A friend of mine entered Swarthmore in 1962 on a scholarship and the attitude toward African American women like her was cool at best and condescending. She left after one year, gave up her scholarship and joined SNCC.

    Bibi hire a Criminal Attorney.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hired a well-known lawyer described in the Israeli press as a “specialist in white-collar crime” to represent him and his wife if they face criminal corruption charges. Jacob Weinroth is considered to be one of the country’s top defense attorneys.

The potential prosecution stems from a report published Tuesday by Israel’s state comptroller, accusing the Netanyahus of spending public funds in a way that “strayed from the cornerstone principles of financial management and the principles of proportionality, reasonableness, saving, and efficiency.”

Netanyahu’s Likud party initially sought to conduct damage control by blaming the fiscal mismanagement on Menny Naftali, former caretaker for the prime minister’s official residence. Naftali, who was already pursuing legal action against the prime minister and his wife, reportedly responded by giving police further testimony against the Netanyahus.

Beginning Thursday night, Naftali spent 11 hours with the Israeli police, providing audio recordings and paperwork to substantiate accusations of excessive spending by the Netanyahus, as well as violations of labor laws. He has been granted limited immunity from prosecution

Conservative politicians seem to love using artists’ work without permission.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the latest politician to get into trouble for an ill-advised song choice while campaigning.

In a recent commercial released in Bibi’s bid for re-election, actors (poorly) dressed up as militants of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, cruise through the desert to the tunes of Jordanian hip-hop group Torabyeh.

The members of the Torabyeh have taken offense at the association, with founding member Firas Shehadeh saying that he “was shocked” and that the group is “against ISIS and against Israel,” in an interview with Reuters. They’ve also taken legal action against Netanyahu and his right-wing Likud party, arguing that the Israeli prime minister did not have permission to use the song.
Netanyahu’s trouble over the use of music is just one in a long list of clashes between politicians and artists. In the U.S., almost every Republican presidential nominee in the last thirty years has been told to stop using one of the songs prominently featured in their campaigns, from Bruce Springsteen slamming Ronald Reagan for using “Born in the USA” to Tom Petty threatening to take action against both George W. Bush and John McCain for use of “I Won’t Back Down.”

But pairing Torabyeh’s track with Islamic State militants is arguably far more offensive than using it on the campaign trail, and especially tone-deaf since Shehadeh told Reuters the song, ‘Ghorbah,’ is actually a take on the political alienation of Palestinians.

The ad also comes at a sensitive time for Jordanians after the brutal murder of one of the nation’s fighter pilots by Islamic State militants.

Wouldn’t be something that Bibi can’t make his speech to Congress because he’s been indicted for crimes? Lets hope Boner and all the other GOP wind up with egg on their faces over this.

I am very happy to report that the NYT is indulging in some rare truth-telling about Obamacare today.
They have a 1/2 page pictorial graph of the various groups benefiting from the ACA.

Best thing though is this line,” Most impotant, just three key provisions—creation of exchanges with subsidies for those who qualify, expansion of Medicaid, and minimum standards for insurance plans— Have benefited AT LEAST 31 Million Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

    (Exclamation are points mine.)
Nevertheless the info is credited to ACAsignups .net who is the most excellent Charles Gaba.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The rich aren’t taxed enough and the middle class is taxed too much. As for your taxes, you probably think they’re too high as well.

But Bob Montgomery of Martinsville, Virginia, said people with higher incomes should pay more.

“I think the more you make the more taxes you should pay,” said Montgomery, who is retired after working 40 years at an auto dealership. “I can’t see where a man makes $50,000 a year pays as much taxes as somebody that makes $300,000 a year.”

According to the poll, 68 percent of those questioned said wealthy households pay too little in federal taxes; only 11 percent said the wealthy pay too much.

Nena, this is the question DWS actually sent to Democrats to see which way they would vote and which she said was ‘important’ so the DNC could determine the issues it would support. She has to ask this when a five-year old could tell her what the DNC should support? Sometimes I think they all parked their common sense in another location/era/world and are flying blind.

” BERLIN — A Russian newspaper claims to have an official government strategy document outlining the invasion of Ukraine that was prepared weeks before the Ukrainian government collapsed last year.

The editor of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitri Muratov, reported the document during an interview with Echo of Moscow, a radio station. In the interview, which was reported by news outlets Saturday, he did not reveal how the newspaper came into possession of the document in the media unfriendly Russian world, but said he had confidence it was authentic.

Novaya Gazeta is considered a rarity in Russia these days, an independent investigative newspaper that’s known to anger the Kremlin on a regular basis. The editor said the paper’s plan is to publish the full details of the strategy document next week.

Muratov said the document characterized then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych as “a person without morals and willpower whose downfall must be expected at any moment.” Yanukovych fled Ukraine for Russia on Feb. 22, 2014.”

      February 22, 2015 at 2:22 pm

So did Russia quietly “engineer” Yanukovych’s downfall so that they had pretext for invasion. If this document is true, it sure sounds like a possibility.

      • February 22, 2015 at 2:28 pm

By early Feb, 2014, it was obvious that instability in Ukraine was going to increase, Jackie G. I suspect that Yanukovych was ordered by Putin to exit, setting the stage for what we have watched unfold.

Ukraine is at war. The situation is beyond anyone’s ability to predict outcomes. What is clear is that Putin is on a fast track to destroying Russia’s economy, and lots of Ukrainians, like their ancestors, are ready to fight to their death for their freedom and ever stronger integration with Europe.
